예술은 인간의 무의식과 의식, 정신과 형체의 교감을 통해 나타나는 정신적 세계이다. 이러한 세계관은 개인의 체험으로 형성된 세계의 본질을 파악하고 이러한 과정에서 정립된 것이 작품을 통하여 표현한다.

인간의 불안, 소외, 두려움 등 심리적 문제가 근원이 되어 치유하는 과정에서의 체득이 작업에 바탕이 된다. 불교회화(佛敎繪畵)를 통해 심리적 문제를 치유하는 과정의 체득을 바탕으로 동양 전통 상징에 대한 탐구로 이어지고 보이지 않는 세계의 가치에 대한 본질(에너지)을 담고자 한다.

예로부터 사람들은 현세의 삶에 대한 불만이나 고난 등을 더 나은 미래를 소망하며 해소하였는데 이것은 전통 상징이미지에서 잘 나타난다. 그들이 사용한 이미지들은 공통적으로 '현세복락주의', '길흉화복'등을 염원하는 정신적 소망을 내포한다. 이러한 상징이미지들은 예술의 원천인 집단 무의식으로 융의 원형적 상징이론에서 나타난다. 상징은 원형을 내포하고 있어 정신적 에너지를 불러일으키는 본질을 바탕으로 한다.

작품에는 이러한 상징을 근저로 전통이미지와 주관화된 상징이미지들이 상호 유기적으로 재구성되어 초월적 공간을 형성한다. 전통 상징물의 재해석과 순수 창작의 상징으로 이루어진 형상은 형체와 정신이 융합된 곳으로 심리적 균형을 잡아주는 '생성공간'에 위치한다. 생성공간은 기포의 형상으로 표현되며 에너지의 순환을 간접적으로 제시한다. 이러한 생성공간의 생성·순환과정은 노자의 '도(道)'와 융의 '자기(Self)'의 과정에 대한 이론적 고찰로 보충한다. 노자의 '도'와 융의 '자기'는 정신 내에서 상반된 범주의 공존에 의해 대극의 합일을 이루어낸다. 노자의 '無'의식으로의 '물러남'과 융의 '무의식'으로 '퇴행' 은 새로운 원천을 불러오는 태도이며, 생기를 되찾기 위한 '치유'를 통한 재생이다. 상반된 영역의 심리적 균형에 대한 자기원형(自己元型)적 기능은 노자의 '유무상생(有無相生)'에서 현실세계와 근원적 세계 조화와 융의 '전체정신'에서 의식과 무의식의 조화에서 나타난다. 따라서 자기 자신의 원형적 세계와 조화를 이루면 이기적 욕망으로부터 초월할 수 있고 타인의 원형성과 교류하고 조화를 이룰 수 있다.

따라서 상징 이미지의 상상을 통한 유기적 구성과 기포의 형상은 초월적인 형상, 공간을 만들어 내는데, 형체와 정신이 서로 융합되는 곳으로 동휴(同休)와 꿈이 가능한 곳이다. 현시대에 과거의 상징이 가지고 있는 영원한 본질을 깨닫고, 위축된 현실에서 풍요로운 에너지와 행복으로 전한다. 사고가 감정을 지배하듯, 상징이미지의 긍정적 본질을 파악하고 사고를 통해 긍정적 감정으로 이끌어 가는 것이다. 각자 자신의 삶에서 삶의 방향을 조절할 수 있는 힘을 길러 행복을 느낄 수 있으면 한다. ■ 강현정

This thesis is a study into how universal symbolic images and artist's own created symbolic images recomposition themselves by interweaving with each other within a painting, in order to generate a creation space. To briefly introduce the background of the research, it all started with a very personal experience of feeling relatively isolated in a social environment which was dominated by a notion of superioritizing sons over daughters, which led me having to find ways to heal myself. ● This inner psychological issue which couldn't be completely resolved even through work, was a trigger that caused me to taken on a persona which didn't adapt to reality and wanted to escape it. However, after a coincidental introduction to Buddhist art from the Goryeo dynasty, I found myself healing the old inner pain through this medium, and soon I started to immerse myself in these Buddhist paintings. This eventually led to a study into the traditional Korean symbolic images, and I started to graft the techniques from Buddhist paintings into my own work. My psychological space (creation space) on the screen entails various symbolic images. ● The contemplation on the characteristics of creation space(Saeng sung gong gan, (生成空間), and the analysis of the symbolic images are the linchpin of this thesis. From long ago, people would often ease their anguish and suffering of their everyday lives and hope for a better future, and this sentiment is vividly expressed in the traditional Korean symbolic images. The images used by these people commonly contain emotional hope for utopia and fortunes. These traditional images are a result of a collective unconscious, and in his theory Archetypes, Carl Jung sees these as the origin of art. Archetypes are primordial images, interconnected system and non-visible center of energy, which are potential symbols that trigger the human consciousness. Therefore, by representing archetypes, symbols can trigger mental energy. Based on these phenomena, my work contains traditional images and subjective symbolic images that recompose themselves through interweaving with each other, and create transcendental space. The shape created by reinterpretation of traditional symbolic significance and symbols made by pure creation, is located in the creation space, which is a space that combines form and mind, and holds the psychological balance. The production process of such creation space is similar to the processes of Laozi's Taoism and Jung's self. In Laozi's Taoism and Jung's self, two opposite categories coexist within one's psyche and these opposites form unity. Laozi's concept of return to state of nothingness and Jung's regression into unconscious are both an effort to call for a new source, and to reclaim livelihood, through healing. ● Therefore, in my work, the harmony of unconscious and conscious founded on the spiritual character of symbols, provide psychological balance of the opposite poles within one's psyche. This research is about the creation space which holds the psychological balance through imaginatively recomposing various symbolic images. The purpose and significance of this study lies in identifying the potential growth of the work by theoretical contemplation and deep analysis of the models. ■ KANGHYUNJUNG
