말 사이의 거리 The Distance between Words

케이크갤러리는 2016년 7월 15일부터 8월 21일까지 작가 이수진의 개인전 『말 사이의 거리 The Distance between Words』를 개최한다. 이수진은 텍스트와 비디오, 퍼포먼스 등의 매체를 통해 '언어'에 대한 주제를 다루고 있다. 이수진의 작업은 모국어가 아닌 영어를 사용하며 살았던 작가의 경험과 그 환경에 대한 관찰과 반응에서 출발한다. 이번 전시에서 선보이는 작품인 「레의 대화」, 「하이픈」, 「차학경 프로젝트」 는 '언어'에 접근하는 작가의 다각적인 작업 방식을 보여준다. 본 전시는 서울시립미술관에서 시행 중인 '신진미술인 전시지원 프로그램'의 선정 전시이다. ● "나는 어디에 속해있는가?" 이수진은 오랜 기간 동안 외국에서 거주한 후 스스로에게 되풀이해서 물었다. 그리고 "자신이 속한 곳"은 고정된 한 장소, 국가, 혹은 문화권이 아니라 오히려 사용하는 두 언어 --- 영어와 한국어 --- 에 있다는 것을 깨달았으며, 동시에 자신이 두 언어 사이의 공간에서 존재한다고 말한다. 따라서 이수진의 작업은 작가 자신이 '언어의 사이의 공간'을 항해하는 방법이다. 작가는 '말한다'는 신체적 행동 그 자체에 대한 관심과, 발화의 요소들(억양, 음의 길이, 감정, 머뭇거림, 실수 등)을 적극적으로 작품을 통해 드러낸다. 또한 구어(spoken words)와 텍스트를 병치함으로써 이미지와 소리의 관계, 언어의 소유권에 관해 이야기한다. 작가의 최근 작업은 한 사람이 사용하는 언어가 그 사람의 정체성을 형성하면서도 그것을 온전히 설명할 수는 없는 언어의 성격을 반영한다. ● 「레의 대화」는 단 채널 비디오로, 두 사람의 대화를 영어와 한국어로 보여주고 들려준다. 대화자는 이수진과 유지원 (통역사/번역가로 활동 중인 이수진의 친구)인데 이 두 사람은 그들 자신과 자신이 사용하는 언어의 관계에 대해 이야기 한다. 계속해서 상기되는 주제 중 하나는 어떻게 말하고 쓸 언어를 선택하는지에 대한 것이다. 대화의 각 섹션은 '레' 음으로 구분된다. 대화(텍스트)는 여러 방식으로 제시된다: 구어로, 녹취되어, 번역되어, 재현되어, 편집되어, 혹은 "비(非) 편집"된 상태로. 이 텍스트(들)은 통제되는 동시에 즉흥적이기도 한데 이것은 말로 하는 텍스트와 글로 적힌 텍스트 사이의 구분을 모호하게 만든다. 말로 하는 텍스트와 적힌 텍스트는 긴밀하게 연결되어있지만 결코 동일할 수는 없는 것이다.

「하이픈 (Hyphen)」은 이수진의 아티스트 북이다. 표제는 작가가 단어와 단어를 연결하면서 동시에 절단하는 하이픈에 얼마나 흥미를 느끼는지를 반영한다. 이 책은 여러 개의 다른 스타일의 텍스트의 콜라주다: 편지, 대본, 인터뷰 녹취, 리스트, 단어의 사전적 정의, 위키피디아 문서 등. 이들은 제2 언어, 혹은 제3 언어를 선택하여 글을 쓰는 작가들의 이야기와 함께 엮여졌다.

「차학경 프로젝트 (Theresa Hak Kyung Cha Project)」는 이 전시의 또 다른 단 채널 비디오이다. 2001년부터 이수진은 한국계 미국인 작가인 차학경에 대해 연구를 해왔고, 이 비디오는 작가가 구상하고 있는 학제간 프로젝트의 첫 파트이다. 이 작품은 차학경의 작품에 등장하는 여러 가지 주제를 탐험한다. 이 주제들 --- 번역/여러 언어의 사용, 시간, 어머니, 국가적 정체성, 그리고 소리(반향 음으로) --- 은 인터뷰이들의 말과 그들의 차학경의 텍스트 낭송을 통해 언어와 연관되어 다루어진다. 여기서 차학경은 오직 자기 자신의 텍스트와 타인의 기억, 목소리를 통해서만 존재한다. 리서치 기간 동안 기록한 이수진의 노트들 일부분이 비디오와 함께 전시된다. ● 이수진(Sujin Lee)은 메릴랜드 인스티튜트에서 순수미술을, 뉴욕대에서 퍼포먼스 스터디스와 스튜디오 아트를 전공했다. Millay Colony for the Arts, Blue Mountain Center, Newark Museum, I-Park 등의 아티스트 레지던시 프로그램에 참여하였고 로버트 W.심슨 펠로십과 A.I.R. 갤러리 펠로십을 수상한 바 있다. 해외에서 다수의 개인전 및 그룹전에 참여했으며 텍스트를 기반으로 작업하고 있다. ■ 윤민화_이수진

Cake Gallery is pleased to present The Distance between Words, a solo exhibition by Sujin Lee. Lee's experience of speaking English as a second language has shaped her artistic work. Lee makes work about language, using text, video and performance. The Distance between Words has three works on display: Re-Conversation(s) [sic], Hyphen, and Theresa Hak Kyung Cha Project. The exhibition reveals Lee's ongoing interest in both spoken and written text and her various approaches to her subject matter, language. This exhibition is supported by Seoul Museum of Art as part of Emerging Artists & Curators Supporting Program. ● "Where do I belong?" Lee has been asking herself, after living abroad for many years. She has begun to realize that "where she belongs" is not one fixed place, a nation, or a cultural group. Rather, it is the two languages that she speaks—Korean and English. Lee says she is also part of the in-between space of the two. In her work, Lee navigates the "language space," which is elusive, complex, limited, expansive, and sometimes contradictory. Lee is very drawn to the physical act of speaking. The elements that spoken words hold—accents, durations, emotions, hesitations, and mistakes interest her—as well as how those elements are presented and negotiated in different written forms. Lee's work also explores the relationship between sound and image and the ownership of language. She has been contemplating on how the language(s) one speaks and writes shapes his/her identity but one's identity cannot be ever fully defined in language. ● Re-Conversation(s) [sic] is a single channel video, featuring a conversation in English and Korean. There are two speakers: Sujin Lee and Jiwon Yu. Yu is a friend of Lee and currently works as a translator and an interpreter. They talk about their own relationships with the languages they speak and write. One of the topics that keeps coming up in their conversation is how one chooses a language to speak and write. Each section of the conversation is punctuated by Re, the musical note. The conversation (text) is presented in various ways: spoken, transcribed, translated, reenacted, edited, or "unedited." The text(s) is controlled and also improvised, blurring the line between spoken text and written text. Spoken text and written text are intimately connected, but they are never identical to each other. ● Hyphen is Sujin Lee's first limited-edition artist's book. The title reflects the artist's fascination with the hyphen, a punctuation mark that links and separates words at the same time. The book is a collage of different styles of texts: letters, scripts, transcripts, lists, dictionary definitions, Wikipedia documents, etc. These texts are accompanied by stories about writers who made conscious choices to write in their second or third language. Lee worked with Park Yeounjoo at Hezuk Press for the project. ● Theresa Hak Kyung Cha Project is another single channel video in the exhibition. Since 2001, Lee has been doing extensive research on the Korean American artist Theresa Hak Kyung Cha, and this video is the first part of an interdisciplinary project that Lee is envisioning. The piece explores several subjects that appear in Cha's work. The subjects—translation/use of multiple languages, time, mother, national identity and sound (in echo)—are discussed in relation to language through the interviews and readings of Cha's text. Cha is only present through her text and others' memories and voices. Some of Lee's notes written during her research are on view with the video.■
