사물을 읽다 Looking into things

'빼는 것이 더하는 것'이라는 대형 마트의 구호를 마주했었다. 마트에 가면 구매목록보다 많은 물건을 사느라 장바구니가 무겁게 돌아오지만 여전히 이 구호가 마음에 든다. 빈 장바구니를 채우며 목록을 하나씩 지워나갈 때 속은 후련해진다.

평소 장바구니에 채우고 싶은 것이 생필품만 있는 것은 아니다. 정서도 채우고 싶다. 그래서 가끔 미술관도 찾는데, 여기에선 빼는 것도 더하는 것도 어렵다. 사야 할 물건도, 지워야 할 구매목록도 없다. 어쩌면 이것이 어려워 속 편하게 마트를 찾는 것인지도 모르겠다.

'사물을 읽다'에서는 어깨를 누르는 무거운 개념 말고 가벼운 서비스만을 제공한다. 여기에선 무거운 장바구니를 들고 입장한다. 마트에서 손쉽게 장을 보듯, 무거운 장바구니를 가볍게 비우고 나오는 것이 이 전시에서 할 일이다. 내게 주어진 사물을 어느 자리에 어떻게 가져다 놓든 상관이 없다. 단지 우리가 마트에서 가격과 상표와 유통기한과 구성성분을 꼼꼼히 따져보는 것처럼, 쓸모없는 사물이 가득한 바구니 속을 관찰하면 된다. 사물에서 미처 읽어내지 못한 이야기를 재치 있게 풀어보자. 예술도 빼는 것이 더하는 것이다.

작가소개 ● 강인우, 김덕영, 김우정, 임승균 작가로 구성된 그룹 「m:art」는 mart와 m그리고 art의 합성어의 중간적 이미지를 가진 로고이다. 로고가 암시하듯이 상품과 예술사이의 경계에 서있는 기존에 없었던 새로운 개념의 전시 플랫폼이다. 다양한 영역(디자인, 패션, 무용, 음악, 시각예술)의 예술이 모이는 '융합'과 시민과 대중에 가까이 다가가는 '소통'이 큰 두 개의 기둥이다. 문화예술을 가깝게 다가가고 예술과 소비가 함께 가능하면서도 예술성이 휘발하지 않는 것. 대중이 마트에 가듯이 편하게 예술작품을 만지고 앉고, 드러누워 즐기는 것, 이것이 「m:art」 가 나가고자 하는 방향이다. 따라서, 우리는 그것으로부터 예술문화와 소비문화라는 양극의 문지방이 되기를, 대중과 예술가가 가까워지는 소통의 장이 되기를 희망한다. ■ 서울시청 하늘광장 갤러리

In big shopping centers, we sometimes come across signs reading, 'Minus Means Plus!' Ironically, when we get home, our shopping bags are filled with more products than had been on our shopping list. It feels better to fill our shopping carts. ● It may be not only daily necessities and basic items that we want to put into a shopping cart. We also want to fill our hearts with emotional satisfaction. It is not easy to satisfy our hearts and emotion just by going to a museum, a performance, or a park. It is even harder to pull something out of or put something in our basket of emotions. In there, we do not have things to buy, or shopping lists. Maybe because of this distress, we go to shopping centers seeking comfort. ● The exhibition Looking Into Things offers visitors a chance to experience arts within a context of light-hearted "service." A heavy shopping basket is given to each visitor, and their task is to empty the basket. The visitor may pull things out of the basket and put them anywhere he or she wants. Just like we look at the expiration date and contents of products at a store, we can seek out the useless things in the basket. We may find these objects' unread stories. In the arts, minus also means plus. Artist Information ● The logo 「m:art」 is a combination of the letter "m" of mart, and word "art." It is a new concept for exhibition platforms. It literally presents the boundary between commercial products and arts. The main two pillars of 「m:art」 are mergence of various arts including design, fashion, dance and music, to visual arts, and communication with the public. 「m:art」 is committed to providing the public with an opportunity to enjoy and purchase art works easily while maintaining the value of arts. It allows people to touch art works and even to sit and lay down on them. 「m:art」 hopes to be a bridge between "art" culture and "consumption" culture, as well as a place of communication between artists and the public. ■ SKY PLAZA GALLERY
