텅 빈 채움 full-filled emptiness

지극히 감성적이고 고요한 두 작가의 작품은 텅 비어 있다. 그러나 비어있는 공간, 마치 진공과도 같은 공간은 무언가로 꽉 채워져 있는 듯하다. 그들은 하고 싶은 이야기가 많다. 오랜 시간 자신의 내면에 꼭꼭 쌓아온 것들이 너무 많아 한꺼번에 끄집어 낼 수가 없다. 하나씩 하나씩 덜어내어 비우다 보니 남은 것이 하나도 없는 비어있는 공간에는 축적된 그들의 이야기가 가득하다. ● 평면의 화면 위에 영혼이 깃든 김미경의 색면 추상 앞에 서면 그 고요함에 호흡이 멈추게 된다. 간결함 너머로 밀려오는 작가의 이야기가 조용히 들린다. 작가는 오랜 시간 하나의 문제를 지속적으로 생각해오는 과정에서 시작된 자신의 작품은 지극히 개인적인 단서를 통해 꾸준히 이어지는 통로들이 연결되고 자라면서 진행된다고 말한다. 김미경은 어린 시절 겪었던 경험과 느낌, 두려움과 기대감, 자식들이 유일한 세상이던 어머니를 생각하며 마음의 근원을 상상한다. 자신을 둘러싼 환경에 대한 몸짓의 기록들과 세상과 삶에 대해 감지하는 섬세한 느낌과 자각들에 대하여 시간이 허용하는 깨달음을 평면에 쌓아가는 과정이 자신의 작품이라고 이야기한다. 층층이 쌓아가는 색 면의 겹은 노동의 행위와 시간의 기록을 보여준다. 김미경은 사적인 것들을 표현하는 수단으로 기하학적인 형태를 구현한다. 보는 이들은 그리드형태 위에 축적되어 쌓여진 겹 사이사이에서 무한한 의미를 상상하게 된다.

책상 위에 굴러다니는 지우개의 정갈한 모서리가 둔탁해 질 때가지 김시연은 손가락을 위로 아래로 움직여 가루를 만든다. 반복적인 움직임과 시간의 의미 그리고 힘의 균형의 축적으로 하찮은 물건이 작가에게는 중요한 사물로 변화 되어 작품을 이룬다. 주어진 것들이나 바랜 기억과 흔적들이 사라진 빈 자리에 소복이 내려앉은 지우개 가루들은 생활에서 지나쳐 버리는 사소한 것들이다. 작가는 눈에 보이는 사물의 정의나 의미에서 벗어나 중요하지 않다고 여겨지는 것들의 중요함에 대해 사유한다. 자신의 삶 속에서 계속되는 노동은 시간의 기록을 보여주고 작가의 삶을 느끼게 한다. 김시연은 어긋난 사물의 작은 틈 사이로 들어가 한적함의 순간, 한 순간의 쉼을 체험하는 일이 곧 작품을 만드는 과정이라고 한다. 작가는 터질 듯한 마음을 비우고 많은 이야기로 채워진 공간에 한적함의 순간을 선사하려 한다. ● 두 작가가 만들어 내는 한적한 공간에서 들려오는 삶의 이야기에 귀 기울여보자. 작업을 위한 시간의 기록을 더듬어 보는 것도 의미가 있겠다. ■ 조정란

The works of these two utterly emotional, quiet artists are empty. But the empty space, the vacuum-like space, gives a sense of fullness. The artists have a lot to say. The many things that have stacked up inside them over time cannot be accessed all at once. As they are removed and emptied out one by one, the empty space with nothing remaining is full of their accumulated stories. ● Standing before Mikyung Kim's color-field abstract painting, where her soul dwells in the picture-plane, my breath is taken at its tranquility. Beyond the simplicity, I hear the quiet story of the artist coming to me. She says her works begin as she thinks continuously about a single issue, and develop as they grow various passages that connect extremely personal clues. Kim says her work is a process of accumulating on the picture plane her documentations of gestures against the environment surrounding her, such as childhood experiences and feelings, fear and expectations, imagination of the source of the heart based on thoughts about her mother, to whom her children were her only world, and the enlightenment she gained over time concerning delicate feelings and awareness of the world and life. The color planes stacked layer after layer demonstrate a documentation of labor and time. As a means to express private things, Kim embodies geometrical shapes. Viewers imagine infinite meanings between the layers accumulated on the grid-shape. ● Si Yeon Kim moves her fingers up and down to make powder until the neat edges of the eraser rolling around on the desk are dulled. Through repetitive movement, significance of time, and accumulation of the balance of force, a trivial object is transformed into an item important to the artist, and thus forms a work of art. The eraser powder, piled in a heap in the empty places where given things, faded memories and traces have disappeared, represents the trifling things that are overlooked in life. The artist transcends definitions or significances of visible objects, and contemplates on the importance of things that are considered insignificant. Her continuous labor presents a recording of time and enables us to feel the artist's life. For Si Yeon Kim, entering the small cracks between dislocated objects and experiencing a moment of tranquility or a moment of rest is the process of making a work of art. She seeks to empty her almost bursting mind, and to present a moment of tranquility to a space filled with many stories. ● Let us listen to the stories of life coming from the tranquil spaces created by the two artists.
