무하유지향 (無何有之鄕 A Land of Nothing)

나는 '이상향(理想鄕)을 향한 여정'으로서 '유(遊)'의 표현에 관심을 가지고 있다. 쾌(快)나 락(樂)이 육체의 즐거움에 비중을 둔다면 유는 '정신적 즐거움'을 지향한다. 장자(莊子)는 현실 속에서 정신적 즐거움을 유지하는 방법으로 '거울론'을 펼친다. 거울처럼 현실을 투영함으로서 현실의 오욕칠정(五慾七情)에 휘둘리지 않고 마음의 이상을 유지할 수 있다는 것이다.

이러한 맥락에서 나는 유에 관한 작업을 한다. 그동안 『108 (念)』(2005)을 시작으로 『사이 (間)』(2007), 『이도공간 (異道空間)』(2009), 『상구원질도 (象求原質圖)』(2011), 『상구원질도, 제이 (象求原質圖, 第二)』(2013) 등의 전시를 진행하였다. 여기에서 정신적 즐거움은 '관조(觀照), 사유(思惟), 부유(浮遊), 환기(換氣), 이동(移動), 소요(逍遙)'등의 형식으로 추구되었다. '관찰, 생각, 거리 두기, 새로운 만남, 천천히 걷기' 등을 회화적으로 표현한 것이다.

이번 『무하유지향 (無何有之鄕)』에서는 ‘펼친 하늘과 그리드에 걸친 묵희(墨戱)’로 유를 표현하고자 하였다. '무하유지향'은 소요유(逍遙遊)편 등에 전하는 장자의 언급으로 '아무도 없는 곳' 또는 '세상에 없는 곳', 즉 '이상향'을 의미한다. 작업에서 천연한 하늘은 이상적인 삶, 광막한 그리드(grid)는 가능성의 공간으로 해석할 수 있다. 그리고 뒤엉킨 먹자국은 이상을 향한 몸짓이다. 우리의 바램과 노력은 춤이 되고 노래가 되어 지상을 유영(遊泳)한다. 우리의 하루가 이상을 향한 걸음에 보태어 지기를 바래본다.

I take a keen interest in how to express "遊" (유, enjoyment) as a journey to an ideal world. While "快" (쾌, pleasure) and "樂" (락, delight) put emphasis on physical pleasure, it seeks spiritual pleasure. Zhuangzi gives the analogy of a mirror as a way to maintain spiritual pleasure in reality. He means that we are able to maintain peace of mind through a reflection of reality like a mirror, untrammeled by the five desires (material wealth, sexual desire, the desires for fame, sleep, and food) and the seven basic emotions (pleasure, anger, sorrow, fear, love, hatred, and avarice). ● I work on "遊" (유, enjoyment) in this context. The solo shows I have held so far include 108 (Thought)(2005), In Between (2007), Different Space (2009), and Elephants Seeking the Truth (2011), and Elephants Seeking the Truth Part II (2013). Spiritual pleasure has been sought after in these art shows in the form of "meditation, thinking, floating, recollecting, movement, and wandering at ease." I have represented observation, thought, distancing, a new encounter, and a leisurely walk in a pictorial manner. ● I pursue "遊" (유, enjoyment) in this exhibition through a playful rendition of ink and brush ranging the sky and grids. "無何有之鄕," the exhibit title mentioned in the chapter Enjoyment in Untroubled East, Zhuangzi refers to a land of nothing or no place in the world. In my work, the sky in a natural state stands for an ideal life and vast grids for a space with potential. Tangled brush marks are gestures toward an ideal. Our wishes and efforts become dances and songs and float over the land. I wish to move ahead to an ideal day by day. ● I wave my hand. / The minds unable to be conveyed are / Love, sorry, thanks, longing, and hope. / A day that is like sweat, joy, regret, and scribble / Is scattered. ■ Park Hye-shin
