무엇을? – 영원을. Quoi? – L'Eternité.

아뜰리에 에르메스는 2016년 첫 전시로 프랑스 작가 사단 아피프(Saâdane Afif)의 개인전 『무엇을? – 영원을. Quoi? – L'Eternité.』을 마련한다. 5월 10일부터 7월 10일까지 열리게 되는 이 전시는 베를린을 중심으로 최근 활발히 활동하고 있는 사단 아피프의 국내 첫 개인전이다. ● 2004년부터 사단 아피프는 '예술적 협업(artistic collaboration)' 혹은 '예술적 위임(artistic delegation)'이라고 부를 수 있는 자신만의 독특한 예술 제작 방법론을 지속해왔다. 이러한 방법론은 사단 아피프가 자신의 개인전을 위해 동료 작가인 릴리 레이노-드워(Lili Reynaud-Dewar)에게 자신의 이전 작업들과 관련된 노랫말을 써달라고 요청하면서 처음 시작되었다. 릴리 레이노-드워는 4개의 노랫말을 써주었고, 이 노랫말은 사단 아피프의 기존 작업과 함께 전시되었다. 자신의 '기존 작업'과 '자신의 작업에 대한 제3자의 창작'이 더해져 새로운 단계의 작업으로 함께 제시되는 이러한 방법은 이후 사단 아피프의 독자적인 예술 제작 방법론으로 자리잡게 된다. 그 이후로 사단 아피프는 다양한 분야의 사람들과 다양한 방식으로 작업을 진행하게 되었고, 그들의 협업은 예술 작품 – 텍스트 – 노래 – 음악 – 전시 – 책 – CD – 콘서트 등의 과정을 넘나들며 그 영역을 확장해왔다. ● 아뜰리에 에르메스를 위한 프로젝트 『무엇을? – 영원을.』을 위해 사단 아피프는 아르튀르 랭보(Arthur Rimbaud, 1854~1891)의 시 "영원(L'Eternité)"을 떠올리며 2009년에 열렸던 자신의 개인전 『피드백 Feedback: Blue Time vs. Suspense』으로 시간을 거슬러 올라간다. ● "그것을 되찾았도다. / 무엇을? – 영원을. / 그것은 태양과 섞인 / 바다. (Elle est retrouvée. / Quoi? – L'Eternité. / C'est la mer allée / Avec le soleil.)" (L'Eternité, Arthur Rimbaud) 2009년의 개인전 『피드백』에서 모형으로만 제시되었던 콘서트 무대를 실제로 구현했던 2013년의 퍼포먼스에서 실제 무대 배경으로 사용하기 위해 사단 아피프는 양식화된 형상의 태양과 태양 광선을 그린 대형 현수막을 제작했다. 이 작업에 주요 모티프가 된 태양의 이미지에서 사단 아피프는 또 다시 아르튀르 랭보의 시를 떠올렸고, 이것은 곧 다음 단계로 연결되고 이어진다. 무대 배경으로 사용된 3개의 대형 현수막을 각각 7개의 조각으로 잘라낸 뒤, 사단 아피프는 바다를 촬영한 사진을 흑백으로 전사한 플렉시글라스와 겹쳐 또 다른 새로운 작업으로 만들어냈다. 결국, 태양 광선의 파편들과 포개진 바다 이미지는 랭보의 시구(詩句) "그것은 태양과 섞인 바다", 즉, "영원"을 문자 그대로 보여준다. ● 오랜 시간 동안 다양한 매체와 방법을 통해 이어지고 확장되어온 사단 아피프의 작업은 아뜰리에 에르메스의 전시를 통해 작가의 작업 맥락에서 이제는 이미 '전통'이 되어버린 방법론, 즉 '예술적 협업'을 통해 한번 더 의미의 확장을 꾀한다. 사단 아피프는 태양과 바다, 랭보의 시 "영원", 그리고 그 모두로부터 유래한 자신의 새로운 전시 『무엇을? – 영원을.』에 대한 노랫말을 몇몇 동료 작가들에게 의뢰했다. 이 노랫말은 완성된 전시를 아직 보지 못한 동료 작가들에게 전시의 원천만을 제공한 상태에서 의뢰된 것으로, 이것은 사단 아피프의 새 프로젝트에 대한 동료 작가들의 예술적이고 창의적인 주석(註釋)인 동시에 동료 작가들 각자가 제안하는 독립적인 텍스트/예술 작업이기도 하다. 실제로 이 노랫말들은 사단 아피프의 작업을 설명하기보다는 제3자의 자유로운 상상력을 통해 사단 아피프의 프로젝트가 함축하고 있는 의미를 확장하는 역할을 한다고 볼 수 있다. 이 노랫말들은 '태양과 섞인 바다'를 보여주는 이미지/사진 작업들과 함께 전시장에 전시되며, 『무엇을? – 영원을.』의 출발점이 되었던 2013년의 퍼포먼스 무대 모형과 실제 무대 배경막의 잔해 역시 재도입되고 재활용되어 전시의 일부로 어우러진다. 이러한 각각의 요소들은 예술을 제작하고 해석하고 중재하고 순환시키고 확장시키는 사단 아피프의 예술적 전략을 보여주는 흥미로운 지점을 제공한다. ● 사단 아피프는 2006년 모나코 프린스 피에르 재단이 현대미술작가에게 수여하는 상과, 2009년 마르셀 뒤샹 상을 수상한 바 있고, 팔레드 도쿄(2005), 카셀 도큐멘타(2007), 퐁피두 센터 개인전(2010), 베니스 비엔날레(2015), 도쿄현대미술관(2015-2016)에 이르기까지 많은 해외 전시에 참여하였다. ■ 아뜰리에 에르메스

Saâdane Afif, a Berlin-based French conceptual artist will present his solo exhibition "L'Eternité" at the Atelier Hermès in Seoul from May 10 through July 10. This is his first solo exhibition in Korea. ● Since 2004, Saâdane Afif continues his unique method of art production, which might be called artistic collaboration or delegation. At first, he asked the artist Lili Reynaud-Dewar to write lyrics related to his existing works and she gave him four songs, which was the advent of his particular method of producing art. From then on, he worked with various people from various field and their collaboration has expanded its domains going back-and-forth among the process of artwork – text – song – music – exhibition – book – CD – concert, etc. ● For his Seoul project "L'Eternité", he directly harks back to his 2009 exhibition Feedback (Blue Time vs. Suspense), coming up with the eponymous poem by Arthur Rimbaud. ● "Elle est retrouvée. / Quoi? – L'Eternité. / C'est la mer allée / Avec le soleil. (It has been found again. / What? – Eternity. / It is the sea fled away / With the sun.)" (L'Eternité, Arthur Rimbaud) He had stylized drawings of the sun and its rays painted onto three large suspended pieces of fabric as stage backgrounds of a performance of 2013. The image of the sun reminded him of Rimbaud's poem, which led him to conceive this series. He divided these backdrops into several pieces, framed each of them and had black and white photographs of the sea printed on the Plexiglas. Various photographic images of sea were transparently superimposed upon each fragment of the backdrops, which literally illustrate Rimbaud's words "C'est la mer allée avec le soleil". ● And then, following his "now-traditional-method", Saâdane Afif commissioned a new series of Lyrics to several songwriters. Each text will be an artistic, creative, and imaginative commentary on Saâdane Afif's new series of work for "L'Eternité" as well as an independent text/artwork by each songwriter. Saâdane Afif says "the texts are not explanations of the work but expansions of the meaning through the imagination of someone else". These texts will be transferred to the walls in the exhibition space, showing together with the images of the sun and the sea. The mock-up of the original décor for the performance in 2013 and the remnants of the three pieces of fabric backdrops are also re-introduced as a part of the "L'Eternité" project. Each element in the exhibition will show Saâdane Afif's artistic strategy of interpreting, mediating, circulating, producing and expanding art. ● Saâdane Afif won the Prix International d'Art Contemporain de la Fondation Prince Pierre de Monaco in 2006 and Prix Marcel Duchamp in 2009. He has participated in many international exhibitions such as, Palais de Tokyo (2005), Documenta 12, Kassel (2007), Anthologie de l'humour noir, Centre Pompidou (2010), 56th International Exhibition of the Venice Bienniale (2015), and in Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo (2015-2016). ■ Atelier Hermès
