Abstract Monologues 추상적 독백

미국 뉴욕에서 살면서 활발하게 작업하고 있는 이윤홍 작가의 여덟 번째 개인전이다. 멀리 떨어진 타향에서 바라본 한국에 대한 생각, 이방자로서의 미국에서의 삶을 바라보면서 작업을 하고 있다. 이윤홍 작가는 School of Visual Arts, Pratt Institute 에서 회화와 판화를 전공하였다. 이번 전시에서는 회화의 원형적 가능성을 탐색하는 이윤홍 작가의 대표작들을 볼 수 있는 좋은 기회가 되리라 생각된다. ■ 갤러리 담

내 작업을 추상적 독백이라고 부르고 싶다. 의식에 응고된 이미지를 구상적 범주에 따라 이름 짓는 것이 힘들고 때론 인위적으로 느껴지기 때문이다. 작품의 제목들은 단순한 표시체계에 불과할 뿐, 그림을 정의하거나 설명하기 위한 구체적 의미를 나타내는 것은 아니다. ● 나는 이미지들을 추상적 풍경으로 번역하는 과정을 즐긴다. 내가 탐구한 풍경화적 배열은 내면에서 발생했고 추상적으로 탐구되었지만 형식적이거나 초월적이지 않고 사적이며 명확하다. 왜냐하면 이들은 일상의 현실 속에서 응결된 나의 심적 갈등과 갈망을 담고 있기 때문이며 또한 결코 닿지 않는 가상적 세계를 향한 내 내면의 창문들이기 때문이다. ● 내 작품들 속에 드러나는 형태들은 대개가 생물적 형질을 띠고 있다. 그것은 나에게는 살아있음을 의미하며 또 인간이라는 불특정 개인들에 대한 은유이기도 하다. 이들은 재현적 풍경화의 전경과 배경에 기초한 원근적 공간이 아닌 추상표현적인 화면의 깊이 속에 놓여있다. 이 형태들은 미리 선정되거나 상상되어 그려진 특정 이미지들이 아니라 내 정신과 상상력의 즉흥적이고 꾸밈없는 흐름으로서 작품이 그려져 가는 과정 속에서 태어난 존재들이다. 나에게는 작품으로서 완성된 결과물만큼이나 중요한 것이 그리거나 칠하는 과정 그 자체이다. 따라서 내 작품 속의 이미지들은 대개가 작업과정 중에 마주치고 선택되었으며, 구상적 암시와 추상적 처리의 미세한 긴장과 균형 속에 이 이미지들을 드러내고자 했다. ■ 이윤홍

I refer to my work as Abstract Monologues, since I feel it is difficult (sometimes even artificial) to label the images in my mind according to societal categorizations. The titles of my paintings are mere signage, suggestions without concrete meaning to define or explain the works. ● I enjoy the process of translating these visions into abstract landscapes; the arrangements taking place in my mind and explored in abstract fashion. However, they are neither formal nor transcendental. They are private and specific because they contain the conflicts and longings condensed by my psyche in everyday life – an inner window into a fictional world I've never reached. ● Most of the forms in my works assume biomorphic characteristics. Being Biomorphic means being alive to me and are taken as metaphors for unspecified individuals as humans in general. They exist in the abstract expressionist pictorial depth not in the perspective space based on the foreground and the background of representational landscape. I did not select nor imagine any specific forms for my works beforehand. They were born in the process of my working as an improvised and spontaneous flow of my mind and imagination. To me, the process of drawing or painting is as important as the completed result as an artwork. Therefore, the imageries in my works were mostly encountered and chosen in the process of working, and I tried to reveal them in my works holding a delicate tension and balance between a clue of representative image and abstract manipulation. ■ YIYUNHONG
