한 작가의 작품세계와 그것을 배태한 의식은 불가분의 관계를 갖는다. 추상표현주의 화풍의 고성만의 작품은 그것이 의식분출이란 점에서 특수한 미적 국면을 지닌다. 미국적 추상표현주의와 그래피티의 영향이 강하지만 그 안에 담긴 내용은 그의 의식을 관류하는 개인의 감정을 담고 있다고 하는 점에서 차별성을 획득한다. 그 이유는 첫째가 그가 사용하는 주 색채가 전통오방색에 기반을 두고 있다는 점이고 둘째는 검정을 주조로 한 작품들은 수묵기법을 활용하고 있다는 점에 있다. 한국고유의 미적정체성을 찿고 자 하는 고성만의 이러한 노력은 오랜 미국생활을 통해 얻어진 자각에 기인 한다고 할 수 있다. His Oriental views of humanity and world derive from his " I'm from the cosmos", demonstrating the aim of his critical consciousness and his eternal topic. Artistry and Reality of 'Difference' ● These works suggest that he is working under the theme of home-land as artist living in the U.S. Especially, he is focusing on division of homeland reaching seventy years. In fact, the position as party in confrontation, threat to each other, makes it difficult to see the reality properly. Judging others without objectivity is always dangerous. About this reality, this artist living in the United States is describing by adding 'feeling sorry about it'. ■ Choi Hyeongsun
