와일드 드로잉 Wild Drawing

드로잉, 또 다시 자유로워지고 있다. ● 처음부터 인간이 그림을 그리는(Drawing) 것을 예술의 목적으로 삼지는 않았을 것이다. 그것은 오히려 오늘날 사진이 수행하는 역할, 즉, 무언가를 기록하는 목적에서 시작되었을 것이다. 그러나 사진이 발명되면서 드로잉은(그리고 회화는) 기록의 역할로부터 자유로워질 수 있었다. 이는 사진에 의해 기록의 역할로부터 소외된 것이 아니라, 말 그대로 자유로워진 것이다. 드로잉 또한 이때부터 기록이 아닌 표현을 하기 시작한다. 자코모 발라Giacomo Balla와 마르셀 뒤샹Marcel Duchamp의 그림은 움직임을 표현(기록이 아닌)하기 시작했고, 칸딘스키Wassily Kandinsky와 몬드리안Piet Mondrian은 구체적 형상으로부터 자유롭고자 했다. ● 오늘날 드로잉은 또 다시 자유로워지고자 하고 있다. 그것은 역할과 재료로부터의 자유인데, 현대의 기존 드로잉의 역할인 완성된 작품을 위한 준비단계가 아닌 작가의 감각, 지각, 그리고 정서를 담고 있다. 또한 현대의 드로잉의 평면 밖으로 나오려 하기도 하고 붓과 물감이 아닌 재료들로 드로잉을 하기도 한다. 이 전시에서는 드로잉이라는 예술적 방법을 비非드로잉적인 역할, 방법 그리고 재료를 사용해서 기존에는 볼 수 없었던 새로운 드로잉을 만들고 있는 작가들의 작품을 보여준다. 이 작품들은 획일화되고 고정된 삶을 살고 있는 우리들에게 자유로움을 만끽 할 수 있는 시간을 마련해 줄 것이다.

이 전시는 기존의 익숙한 방식에서 벗어나 새로운 드로잉을 감행한 김기라와 이상용의 작품으로 구성된다. 김기라는 그 동안 회화, 조각, 영상, 콜라주, 오브제 등 다양한 매체를 사용하여 한국 현대사회의 문제와 사건 사고들에 대한 이야기를 꾸준히 해 왔다. 김기라가 이번 "Wild Drawing"전에서 보여주는 「이념의 무게」를 위한 드로잉 작품들은 이 시리즈의 조각, 비디오 그리고 설치 작품의 단초가 되어준 '개념적 드로잉'이다. 작품의 형태를 설계/초안하기 위한 드로잉이 아닌, 작품의 개념을 – 이념의 무게를 더하기 위한 드로잉이란 점에서 의미심장하고 새롭다. 한편, 이상용은 먹을 가는데 사용되는 비회화적인 재료인 작은 벼루 안에 '드로잉'하여 이야기를 담는다. 그는 작품에 새, 나무 등 자연의 요소를 드로잉하기도 하며, 추상적인 초상화를 그리기도 한다. 벼루 안에 담긴 내용은 비록 지극히 개인적이고 주관적인 운명에 대한 이야기이지만 벼루라는 미디움이 가진 시간의 흔적과 감성이 더해져 우리에게 운명적인 만남을 갖게 한다. ● 이 두 작가의 작품 형태나 주제는 다르지만 평면과 재료로부터 자유로워진 새로운 미디움을 매개로 나타내고자 하는 메시지를 드로잉 한다는 점에서 공통점이 있다. 이들은 때로는 같은 목소리로, 또 때로는 다른 목소리로 같은 듯 다른 자유로움을 우리에게 보여줄 것이다. ■ LIG 아트스페이스 한남

Drawing, becomes free again. ● People might not have considered drawing as one of the purposes of art in the beginning. It might have begun with the purpose of recording something like photographs do today. But with the invention of photography, drawing (and painting) could break free from their conventional role of recording. It was not divorced from the role of recording, but literally just freed from it. That was when drawing began to be used in an expressive way instead of just for recording. Drawings by Giacomo Balla and Marcel Duchamp began to express (instead of record) movements, and Wassily Kandinsky and Piet Mondrian tried to be free from specific form. ● Today, drawing is about to become free again, to gain its freedom from roles and materials. Modern drawings embrace the artist's sensations, perceptions and emotions, rather than performing the conventional role of preparation for art to be further completed. Drawings today also break free from the flat surface and are done with materials other than brushes and paints. This exhibition displays the artistic technique of drawing in works by various artists who create new, unprecedented forms of drawing using non-drawing roles, tools, methods and materials. These works will provide an opportunity for us, living in this uniform and static life, to enjoy a sense of freedom. ● This exhibition displays works of Kira Kim and Sang Yong Lee, who attempted new forms of drawing free from conventional methods. Kira Kim has been telling stories about issues and events related to Korean modern society using various media such as painting, sculpture, visual materials, collages and objects. Kira Kim's drawings for 「A Weight of Ideology」 in the exhibition "Wild Drawing" are "conceptual drawings" that are the cornerstone of sculptures, videos and installations in this series. These are not drawings to design/draft works, but are drawings to add weight to an ideology as well as a concept, which makes them significant and novel. Meanwhile, Sang Yong Lee tells a story by "drawing" inside a small ink stone, which is an unpicturesque material used for grinding an ink stick. He draws elements of nature such as birds and trees, as well as abstract portraits. The contents in the ink stones are extremely personal and subjective stories about fate, but the traces and emotions of time contained in the medium of ink stone make us encounter fate. ● The two artists display different forms and themes of art, but they share a common ground in that they both draw messages using a new medium free from the flat surface and conventional materials. They will show us the same yet different freedom with the same yet different voices. ■ LIG ARTSPACE HANNAM
