서울시립미술관이 한-불 상호교류의 해를 기념하기 위해 마련한 『보이지 않는 가족 』展은 프랑스 국립조형예술센터(Cnap)와 아키텐지역 현대예술기금(Frac Aquitaine), 그리고 일우재단과의 협업의 결과이다. ● 이 전시는 세계적인 수준으로 정평이 난 프랑스 국립조형예술센터와 아키텐지역 현대예술기금의 방대한 컬렉션 가운데 1950년대 이후의 현대 사진 210여점으로 구성된다. 『보이지 않는 가족』은 사진이나 현대미술 뿐 아니라 문화담론과 인식론에 큰 영향을 끼쳤던 프랑스 철학자 롤랑 바르트(1915-1980)의 탄생 100주년을 기념하면서, 그의 대표적 저서 『카메라 루시다』에 담긴 사진론에 기반한 전시이다.

이 전시는 1955년 뉴욕근대미술관(MoMA)에서 열렸던 『인간가족 』展('인류는 하나'라는 구호 아래 전 세계 사진가들 273명의 503점 작품을 전시했고, 38개국에서 9백만 명 이상의 관람객을 모았던 기념비적인 사진전)에서 보여준 인류라는 상상적 공동체를 비판하면서 오히려 비가시적이면서 주변화된 존재들, '보이지 않는 자들'에 주목한 바르트의 사상을 따른다. 전시는 현대 사회 전반에 내재한 근대 이성의 한계와 모순들을 '신화'로 비판하면서 이를 해체했던 바르트의 개념을 보여준다. ● 『보이지 않는 가족』은 서울시립미술관과 일우스페이스 두 곳에서 개최된다. 서울시립미술관의 전시는 1970년대 이후의 현대사진들을 중심으로 구성되며, 1950년대 흑백사진으로 구성되는 일우 스페이스 전시는 과거를 재해석해내는 에필로그에 해당된다. 이번 전시를 통해 소개되는 사진작품은 프랑스 국립예술조형센터와 아키텐지역 현대예술기금이 소장한 사진 컬렉션의 정수를 엿볼 수 있는 소중한 기회가 될 것이다. 이를 통해 근대기 사진과 영화의 발전을 일궈낸 프랑스 예술의 저력을 확인하는 동시에 현대미술과 사진의 흥미로운 교차점을 살펴보고자 한다. ■ 서울시립미술관

The exhibition The Family of the Invisible (April 5~May 29, 2016) specially conceived for the France-Korea year is the result of a challenging collaboration among the Seoul Museum of Art and Ilwoo foundation for Korea, the National Center of Visual Art (Cnap) and the Regional Fund for Contemporary Art of Aquitaine (Frac Aquitaine) for France. Selected from the collections of two globally recognized institutions, the Centre national des arts plastiques(Cnap) and Fonds régional d'art contemporain Aquitaine (Frac Aquitaine), the exhibition presents 210 contemporary photographs taken after the 1950s. ● The Family of the Invisibles commemorates the 100th anniversary of the birth of the French philosopher Roland Barthes (1915-1980). The exhibition has its anchor in the theory of photography in Camera Lucida, an iconic book written by Barthes which had a significant influence on photography, contemporary art, cultural discourse, and epistemology. Based on Barthes' idea which paid attention to invisible and marginalized beings, the exhibition criticizes the notion of an imaginary community of mankind, which was previously presented in The Family of Man held at the MoMA in 1955. The exhibition also deconstructs mythical elements embedded in contemporary society. ● The Family of the Invisible will be hosted at SeMA and Ilwoo Space. The exhibition at Ilwoo Space presents black and white photographs taken in the 1950s, which will be the epilogue to SeMA's exhibition, presenting contemporary photographs taken after the 1970s. By presenting the exhibition in two institutions, spectators would be able to explore the interesting intersection between Barthes' theory and contemporary photographs, as well as grasp the meaning of the photo collections of Cnap and Frac Aquitaine.
