도시괴담 Urban Legends

서울시립미술관은 한불수교 130주년을 맞아 팔레드도쿄와 함께 진행한 교류 프로젝트의 결과 전시 『도시괴담』을 서소문 본관 3층 프로젝트 갤러리에서 4월 5일부터 5월 29일까지 선보인다. 이 프로젝트는 양 기관 산하 레지던시의 협업으로 레지던시, 워크숍, 전시 등 다양한 프로그램으로 진행됐다. 작가들에게 새로운 창작 환경을 제공하고, 서로 다른 미술 현장을 교류하기 위해 기획된 이 프로젝트는, 2015년 11월부터 파리 파비옹에서의 리서치부터 출발하여 3월 19일부터 3주간 진행하는 서울 워크숍으로 이어지며, 약 5개월 동안 조사하고 실험한 결과를 서울시립미술관에서 전시한다.

참여 작가는 김아영(2012년 난지미술창작스튜디오 입주 작가)을 포함하여 루 림, 알렉시 기예르, 앙주 레치아, 오엘 뒤에, 올리 파머, 장-알랭 코르 등 7명의 글로벌한 작가들로, 성별, 국적, 문화권의 경계를 넘나든다. 서로 다른 배경을 가진 이들은 서울과 파리 양 도시에서 체득한 경험을 바탕으로 상상력 충만한 창작활동을 펼친다. 두 도시의 물리적 거리와 정신적, 문화적 차이, 언어의 장벽 등 제한된 조건과 환경이 낳는 엇나간 해석과 오해, 단절을 생산적 오독으로 통찰하며 유쾌하고 환상적인 자신만의 괴담을 생산한다. 새로운 환경을 마주하는 과정에서 발생하는 오차와 오독의 조각들로 그려진 『도시괴담』을 통해 익숙한 현실을 바라보는 또 다른 시선을 마주할 수 있기를 기대한다. ■ 서울시립미술관

In celebrating its 130th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Korea and France, Seoul Museum of Art presents Urban Legends, putting forth the outcomes of the exchange program with Palais de Tokyo. This project has been designed in diverse formats including residency, workshop and exhibition under the cooperation of the two institution-affiliate residencies. Seven international artists, crossing over boundaries of gender, nationality and culture, will unfold creative initiatives filled with imaginations based on the urban experience from Seoul and Paris. Their insights from productively misreading the deviating interpretations and misunderstanding caused by limited conditions and environments such as the physical distance between the two cities, psychological and cultural differences, and language barrier create intriguing legends of their own. As a picture put together with pieces of errors and misreading demonstrated in the course of facing a new environment, Urban Legends anticipates confrontations with other perspectives in viewing the familiar reality. ■ SEOUL MUSEUM OF ART (SeMA)
