자연과 하나가 되어 자연 속을 거닐며 바라보고 생각하는 두 작가는 같은 곳을 바라보지만 다른 언어로 자연을 표현한다. 그들의 시선은 어디에 머무는지, 그들의 몸은 어떤 움직임으로 기록을 남기는지 전시를 통해 자연의 풍경 속으로 들어가 본다.

창문을 통해 바깥세상을 바라보는 유근택의 시선은 어느덧 창문을 열고 풍경 안을 거닐고 있다. 작가에게 창문은 동양적인 것과 서양적인 것을 구분 짖는 매개체이며 자신의 내면세계와 바깥세상의 경계를 의미한다. 작가는 그 경계를 오가며 이미지뿐만 아니라 그리는 방식, 재료까지도 동양화와 서양화의 범위를 넘나드는 시도를 되풀이하며 꾸준히 작품세계를 발전시켜간다. 사각형 안에 풍경이 들어와 구도를 잡는 서양화와는 다르게 작가에게 동양화는 밖으로 나가서 바람을 느끼며 거니는 풍경 즉 자신의 신체와 만나는 풍경개념을 말한다. 전시장 2층 창가에 걸리는 창문 시리즈는 사각형 프레임 안에 작가의 시선이 묻어있는 선들이 쌓여 풍경을 이룬다. 유근택은 창문에 구조적으로 집들이 얹혀있는 풍경과 쌓여있는 선들을 풀어내고 단순화시키는 과정을 통해 자신의 조형언어를 드러낸다. 어느 곳을 가든 창을 보면 그리고 싶어진다는 작가는 바깥세상의 계속적인 움직임과 시간의 변화를 기록으로 남겨두려는 것이리라.

이진원의 시선은 우리가 볼 수 있는 자연의 표면이 아닌 깊은 곳을 떠다닌다. 작가는 자연 속에서 생성되는 에너지의 흐름을 순간적으로 반짝이는 빛의 형상으로 표현한다. 섬세한 빛이 만들어 내는 색채의 변화는 잔잔하고 고요하기도, 강렬하고 어둡기도 하다. 가늘고 예민한 선들의 움직임은 빛이 에너지를 뿜어내는 듯 화면을 점유한다. 지극히 감성적인 색채와 무의식적인 선의 흐름은 자연과 하나가 되는 작가의 그리는 행위에 대한 기록이다. 내면의 정신세계를 추상적으로 표현하는 이진원의 동양화적인 회화는 인간과 자연 그리고 우주와의 밀접한 관계를 몸의 움직임으로 표현하고 몸과 같이 호흡한다.

전시장에는 이진원의 그림들이 같은 크기로 줄지어 걸린다. 조금씩 달라지는 색채와 분위기는 작가의 감성변화를 파노라마같이 보여준다. 다른 벽면에는 유근택의 작은 창문 시리즈가 나란히 걸린다. 계절에 따라 작가의 시선에 따라 바뀌는 창 밖의 풍경은 보는 이들에게 자신의 기억을 불러 오게 해 줄 것이다. 오랜 시간을 공유해 온 두 작가의 작업은 같은 공간에서 서로에게 어떤 영향을 주게 될지 궁금해진다. ■ 조정란

Two artists embrace nature, sauntering through it, looking and contemplating. Though they gaze at the same place, they express nature through different languages. Where do their eyes settle, and how do their bodies move to leave documentation? Let us enter their landscapes of nature through the exhibition. ● Yoo Geun-Taek, who gazes through windows at the world outside, has opened those windows and now wanders about in the landscape. To this artist, the window is a medium that differentiates between Eastern and Western, and signifies the border between his inner world and the world outside. Crossing back and forth over that border, he continuously attempts to traverse the realms of Eastern painting and Western painting, not only in terms of image, but also in painting method and material, steadily developing his world of art. Unlike Western painting, where the landscape comes into the rectangle to form a composition, Yoo Geun-Taek's Eastern painting is a concept of landscape into which he actually strolls, going outdoors and feeling the wind: a landscape that his body actually encounters. In the Window series, hung beside the window on the gallery's second floor, lines charged with the artist's gaze are accumulated in rectangular frames to form landscapes. Yoo reveals his formative language through a process of unravelling and simplifying the landscapes of houses and lines piled up structurally in the window. The artist, who says that no matter where he goes, windows make him want to paint them, is perhaps documenting the continuous movement and changing time of the outside world. ● The gaze of Yi, Jinwon floats around a deep place that is not the visible surface of nature. The artist expresses the flow of energy generated in nature as forms of light that sparkle momentarily. The changes of color made by the delicate light are gentle and calm, but also powerful and dark. The movement of thin and sensitive lines occupies the picture-plane as if the light is belching out energy. The highly sensuous colors and unconscious flow of lines are documentations of the artist's act of drawing, as he becomes one with nature. Yi, Jinwon's Eastern-style painting, abstractly expressing the inner spiritual world, reveals the intimate relations among humans, nature and the universe through the movement of the body, and breathes together with the body. ● Yi's paintings, of identical size, hang in a row in the gallery. The slightly changing colors and atmospheres present a panorama of the artist's changing emotions. On another wall, Yoo's small window series paintings hang side by side. The landscapes outside the window, which change according to the season and according to the artist's eyes, will evoke viewers' memories. I am curious how the works of these two artists, who have shared a long period of time together, will influence one another in the common space. ■ Jungran Cho
