관조(觀照) - 일상을 통한 삶의 기록

일상적인 것을 통한 삶의 관조와 그 표정 읽기 ● 흔히 인간의 가장 기본적인 삶을 의식주로 표현하곤 한다. 의식주는 삶의 조건인 동시에 실제적인 내용이기도 하다. 그중 옷은 인간에게 있어 제 2의 피부이자 삶을 반영하는 표정이다. 내가 주목하는 것은 바로 이러한 옷들을 통해 발현되는 인간의 삶에 대한 단상이다. 그것은 단순히 옷이라는 물질이 아닌 삶에 대한 내밀한 상징으로 제시되는 것이다. ● 우리는 살아가면서 연령과 지위, 상황과 조건에 따라 서로 다른 옷을 통해 그 삶의 조건을 수용하게 마련이다. 현대 사회에서의 삶은 마치 기성복처럼 같은 것 같지만, 그 속에서도 개개인의 삶은 서로 다른 모양으로 나타나게 마련이다. 획일화된 보편적 가치 속에서도 개인이 처한 상황과 처지, 감정 등이 반영되어 표출되듯이 옷은 이러한 내용들을 저마다의 독특한 주름과 문양을 통해 표출해 낸다. 그것은 개인의 취향, 개성, 습관, 추억 등 한 인간의 다양한 일상의 이야기와 삶의 흔적들을 고스란히 담고 있는 것이다.

내가 주목하는 것은 켜켜이 접힌 옷이 쌓여있는 것과 그 속에 내재되어 있는 주름들의 표정이다. 옷들은 위태하게 쌓여져 불안정한 탑의 모습으로 표현되고 있다. 그것은 옷의 주인들이 감내한 저마다의 삶의 궤적들이다. 비록 흔들리고 위태하지만 여전히 어렵사리 그 삶을 지탱해 온 기록인 것이다. 쌓여진 옷들은 인간마다의 삶의 기록들을 담고 있을 뿐 아니라 장차 다가올 미래에 대한 바람과 희망도 담겨있다. 그리고 그 옷의 주름마다에는 달콤하고 안온한 추억과 덧없이 망실된 과거, 혹은 사무치는 아픔의 기록들, 그리고 앞날에 대한 소박한 꿈과 희망들이 내재되어 있다. 그것은 시간의 저편에 자리하는 망각된 삶의 반추일수도 있지만 경우에 따라서는 여전히 또렷이 기억되는 오늘의 기록일수도 있으며, 내일에 대한 무한한 기대이기도 하다. ● 인간의 삶은 시간을 축적하는 것이다. 옷의 축적과 주름의 형성은 바로 지나온 시간의 상징이다. 나는 그 속에 담긴 개인의 사연들과 삶의 흔적들을 읽고자 한다. 그것은 획일화되고 정형화된 듯 한 현대인의 삶 속에 담겨있는 내밀한 개인사에 대한 관심이며, 이는 결국 인간과 그 삶에 대한 애정 어린 관찰이다. 권위적인 제복이나 화려한 성장이 아닌 일상의 옷들을 통해 나는 평범한 이웃의 삶을 관조하고, 그것이 내재하고 있는 내밀한 흔적들을 더듬어 살핌으로써 소박하지만 치열하고 건강한 삶에 애정과 경의를 표하고자 하는 것이다. ■ 김미화

The contemplation of life through ordinary things and understanding their expression ● Food, clothing, and shelter are humanity's fundamental elements of life. These elements are both the conditions and virtual contents of life. Of these factors, clothing is a second skin for humans and a facial expression reflecting life. What I look at are fragmentary thoughts on life represented by clothing. Clothing is presented as a clandestine symbol of life, not merely as a material. ● We tend to accept the conditions of life through the different clothes we wear in accordance with our age, position, and circumstances. Life in contemporary society is like ready-made clothing, but each individual's life appears different. Clothing represents such content through unique creases and patterns as if each individual's situation, circumstance, and sentiment are reflected in a standardized universal value. ● I have paid attention to stacked folded clothes and the expressions of creases innate in them. The clothes precariously heaped look like an unstable tower. They disclose the traces of life each individual has endured. Although the clothes are shaken and look precarious, they are records of the hardship their owners suffered. These stacked clothes not only bear a record of each individual's life but also their wishes and hopes for the future to come. Bittersweet memories from previous years, evanescent lost days, and deeply imprinted distress are immanent in each pleat. The pleats may be ruminations on forgotten times, records of today, or infinite expectations for tomorrow. ● Human life is an accumulation of time. A heap of clothes and formation of creases is a symbol of previous time. I intend to read each individual's story. I take notice of their personal history as part of the lives of contemporary humans that seem standardized and unified. This is an affectionate observation of humans and their lives. I'd like to express my affection for and respect to a modest, fierce, and healthy life by meditating on everyday costumes and seeking their clandestine traces. ■ KIMMIHWA
