The Layer of Time

시간의 지층-쌓이고 부서지는 시간 ● 인간이 생명을 부여받고 이 세상에 발을 딛는 순간, 누구에게나 주어지는 첫 선물은 시간일 것이다. 그리고 그 누구에게나 동일하게 주어지고 흘러가버리는 시간은 무서우리만큼 엄격하게 객관적이다. 그래서 조금씩 아껴쓰기 위해 시간과 처절하게 싸우기도, 아픈 상황을 망각하기 위해 시간의 힘을 빌리기도, 시간의 흔적들을 조금이라도 지우고 시간을 늘려보려는 노력도, 그리고 너무 힘겨워 그냥 그저 그 시간자체를 견뎌내기도 한다. 이렇게 시간을 둘러싼 어쩔 줄 모르는 각고의 노력들은 시각예술에서도 역시 더욱 세련되게 가공되어 생산된다. 흘러가는 시간의 찰나를 포착해 기록으로 남기며 마치 시간의 영원성을 이룬 듯 보이는 사진 매체, 적절하게 시간과 함께 버무려지는 퍼포먼스의 형식, 아예 현재의 시공간 이외에 또 다른 세계와 또 다른 시간을 선사하려 가상현실을 실현해내는 테크놀로지형식의 시각예술들이 예가 될 수 있다. ● 작가 채진숙은 그간 인간 본연에 대한 끊임없는 의문과 호기심을 다양한 방식으로, 즉 다양한 매체를 자유롭게 사용하며 광범위하게 작업을 소화해왔다. 이번 개인전에서 보여지는 작업들은 유독 시간의 개념에 몰두한 듯 보이는데, 정확히는 시간의 개념을 작업의 재료로 사용했다기보다 시간을 견뎌야했고 견딘 과정의 기록, 흔적으로 보여진다. 작가 본인이 힘든 시간을 견디며 할 수 있었던 것은 움직일 수 있는 한 아름 안에서의 끄적거림이었을 것이고 그러기에 과거 본인의 광범위하게 펼쳐졌던 다양한 작업스타일에 비해 현재의 행위, 즉 자그마한 벽돌형태를 끄적그리는 행위는 더없이 작게만 느껴져 끊임없이 겹쳐 거대하게 쌓는 행위는 상대적으로 거대한 욕망으로 쌓아 올렸을 것이다. 그것이 꿈틀거리는 알 수 없는 생명체로도 보이는 이유에 타당한 증거로도 볼 수 있다.

꿈틀거리는 미묘한 형태의 벽돌유기체는 마치 인간의 가장 큰 욕망의 상징인 뾰족한 바벨탑을 연상시키기도하고, 한쪽 귀퉁이에서부터 조금씩 무너져 버리는 불안함은 그리스로마신화에서의 크로노스 신의 자기 시간의 부정을 말해주기도 한다. 위험해 보이는 거대한 욕망의 덩어리임과 동시에 한편 더없이 나약한 본연의 정체를 드러내 보이는 것이다. 그리고 다른 한편에 다소 불안정하게 공중에 부양하고 있는 식물들은 작가가 작업실 안에서 힘겨운 시간을 견뎌내며 창문너머로 바라본 바깥세상에 중간 시점에 걸쳐져있던 자유롭게 떠다니는 식물 오브제를 그린 것이다. 거친듯 불안하게도 보이는 이 식물들은 가까이 다가가 보면 특유의 아름다운 빛깔을 품고 있어 그 모습이 불안하게 떠있지만 분명히 뿌리내린 작가 채진숙의 본인의 모습을 투영한 듯 보인다. ● 작가 채진숙의 과거 작업들의 주요 개념들 이를테면 뿌리, 근간, 욕망 등의 개념들을 소환해보면 이번 개인전에서 보여지는 시간에 대한 집요함의 결과물들과 새삼 별개는 아니다. 작가 본인의 본연의 근본, 뿌리, 살아가는 흔적을 이번 개인전을 통해 그 어느 때보다도 분명하게 쌓아가고 있는 것으로 보인다. 부서질 수 있다는 연약함을 오롯이 인정하였기에 오히려 강한 모습으로. ■ 고연수

The Layers of Time – the deposition and erosion of time ● From the moment we are born into this world, each of us receives a gift – the gift of time. Time is given to each and every one of us, and it is with that same strict impartiality, that time is also gradually, and inevitably, taken away from us. The ways in which we deal with the passage of time can take many forms. Sometimes, we desperately search for ways to make better use of what time we have remaining. At other times, we might let time slip away to allow our wounds to heal. We might try to extend what time we have left by attempting to erase the physical signs that time inflicts on us. And sometimes, we simply endure its passing and accept its inevitability. ● Through visual art, we can elegantly capture and embody our continuing struggles and efforts to harness and deal with the passage of time. For instance, through photographic media, an artist can capture a moment in time and force time to stand still through lasting images. Performance art can also allow an artist to combine the passing of time and the physicality of our enduring struggles through its duration and choreographed timing of human motions and movements. By embracing new technology, visual art can even create an artist's own virtual world, with its own dimensions of space and time suspended in virtual reality. ● Through her past artworks, the artist Che Jinsuk strived to examine the questions concerning our being and the different elements of our inner self, freely exploring the use of different techniques and methods in her pursuit. Whilst on the surface, Che Jinsuk's latest solo exhibition appears to be about the concept of time, on closer reflection, the exhibition is more of a record of the artist's personal journey recounting the artist's own struggles with the passage of time. In her exhibition, the artist has moved away from the more varied art forms of her previous works, and she uses simpler and smaller drawings – a move that reflects her own inner and physical struggles, where she took to drawings which gave her the comfort she was longing for. However, whilst compared to her past works, her current exhibition works appear smaller in form, there is suppressed ambition conveyed in her drawings, and this is symbolised in the tower of bricks, which extend up towards the sky. ● The artist's depiction of a rising tower of bricks, whilst looking unstable and formless, appears to be alive and in motion. This towering object conjures up an image of the Tower of Babel – a symbol of humanity's rising, and perhaps ultimate, ambition for itself. However, at the same time, the bricks appear to be crumbling and falling away – a reminder perhaps of the inevitability of failure to achieve this ultimate ambition, and that such a pursuit is inevitably doomed to fail. This echoes the vain attempts by Cronus of Greek mythology, who tirelessly sought, but ultimately failed, to prevent the fulfilment of the prophecy that foretold of his eventual demise. In the same way, whilst the tower of bricks appears to symbolise the enormity of humanity's desires and ambitions, the tower stands precarious as if about to collapse at any moment, revealing humanity's own frailties and weaknesses. ● This exhibition also showcases her paintings that draw on more familiar themes taken from her 'Air Plant' series. A plant appears to be freely floating in the air. These paintings appear to reflect the artist's own longing to be free from the confines of her own studio and away from her own personal struggles. ● While the floating plants appear to float precariously in the air, there is on closer examination, great beauty in its detail, colour and design. Whilst appearing to float aimlessly in the air, the plant's roots reach down towards the ground, where it will inevitably find some stability and security from the earth below it. ● The running themes of 'being', 'ambition' and 'desire' which run through her past works may not be apparent in this current exhibition. However, these themes are hard to ignore when the concept of time and our own tenacity to deal with it, also reveal the very nature of our own 'being', 'ambition' and 'desire', In its own way, this solo exhibition is a new "layer" which raises the artist's own personal tower of bricks. But as her works in this exhibition warn, the artist recognises that these layers while strong are just as frail. ■ 고연수
