해변의 여인 Woman on the Beach

나에게 공상은 현실이다. ● 눈 앞에 구현된 상상의 세계는 곧 욕망의 창구이다. 그 속에서 살아 움직이는 인물들은 행복하다. 매끈한 다리와 사랑하는 왕자님이 없어도, 반복되는 아이돌의 후크송을 따라 이루지 못할 사랑을 노래해도 『해변의 여인』 속 인어공주는 행복하다. 그 안에 안데르센 원작의 비극은 없다. 인어공주의 실패한 사랑은 나의 영상에서 실현가능한 욕망으로 재탄생한다. ● 귓가에 맴도는 소리가 있다. 노래를 따라가면 꿈의 세계로 이어지는 문을 발견한다. 그 세계에서는 가요나 종교음악이나 모두 현실의 조각을 상상의 유희물로 전환시키는 마법의 주문이 된다. 영상이 만들어내는 파편적 세계는 노래를 통해 아편적 몽롱함을 안은 채 하나의 통일된 꿈을 이룬다.

현실의 불가능한 꿈은 도시의 비둘기처럼 도처에 서성인다. 파란색 크로마키 스크린, 가상의 세계, 그리고 내가 있는 이곳 현실은 영상을 통해 하나로 환원되지만, 합쳐질 듯 이질적인 이들의 조합은 어느 곳에도 조화되지 못한 채 영상을 배회한다. ● 텔레비전에 등장하는 아름다운 여자 주인공을 동경해왔던 나는 영상 속 세계에서 스스로 주인공이 된다. 이는 끊임없이 '나는 누구인가'에 대하여 질문하는 과정이다. 나에게 현실은 주인공을 찾는 문제이다. '나는 누구인가'에 대한 질문의 연속이다. 주인공은 인어공주일까, 작가 자신일까. 아니면 그 누구도 아닌 것일까? ■ 정새해

The imaginary world to me, is reality. ● The imaginary world made real in front of your eyes is the window of desires within. Even though the mermaid in Woman on the Beach may not have killer legs, a prince falling head-over-heels for her, and sings of unrequited love based on pop idol's trendy song, she is happy. In my re-interpretation of "The Little Mermaid", there is a void Andersen and what was supposed to be a failed tragic love story of the mermaid is reborn as attainable desire in my video. ● A song is ringing in my ears. Following it I find a door that opens up into the dream world. Whether it be K-Pop or religious music, music of that world is the magical incantation that transforms bits of reality into playthings of the imagination. Soaked in a haze of the opiate stupor of song, the fragmented world created by the video makes a unified dream come true. ● The unattainable dreams of reality ubiquitously saunter about like lost pigeons of the city. The blue chroma key screen, the fantasy world, and the reality where I exist all collapse into one by way of the video but failing to fuse together, the discordant medley roams through the video disjointed with no opportunities to unite. ● Having idolized the beautiful female protagonists on television, I let myself become the star of this video world, an endless process of asking myself "Who am I?" Reality for me is about finding that star, finding the main character. It is about the continuous questioning of who I am. And I ask, is the mermaid or the artist the lead, or is there even one at all? ● In this exhibition, I am presenting videos and digital prints which are all individual works but inter connected with the general theme of my desired reality of illusion, fantasy and bliss. ■ Sayhey Chung
