2016 청주미술창작스튜디오는 입주기간동안 작품성과물을 프로젝트 형식으로 선보이는 아티스트 릴레이 프로젝트를 진행한다. 아티스트 릴레이 전시는 스튜디오 전시장에서 그간 작업했던 결과물에 대한 보고전시로 해마다 작가 자신의 기존의 성향과 틀에서 벗어난 새로운 감각과 역량을 보여주는 전시로 개최했다. 이에 9기 작가들의 전초 전시로서 선보였던 『워밍업전』은 어떻게 개개인의 코드와 미적 언어들을 하나의 전체성으로 풀어낼 것인가가 관심이었다면 그 후 작가들의 작업을 풀어내는 워크숍은 그간의 작업과 앞으로의 방향성을 이해할 수 있는 대화들이다. 이렇게 좀 더 개인 작업에 집중하는 릴레이 전시 프로젝트는 체류하는 동안 기존 자신의 방법론을 어떤 방식으로 의미를 새로이 전달할 것인가에 초점을 맞춘다. 개별 스튜디오에서 전개하는 독특한 실험적 아이디어와 날 것의 이미지, 불완전한 예술적 의미들, 모호하고 불편한 상황들을 전시장 속에 잠시 머무르며 그런 첨예한 문제들을 관람객과 나눈다. 이에 현장을 찾는 관람객들은 "우리 자신에게 현대의 '미'와 '예술'이란 무엇인가" 라는 질문을 통해 동시대의 시각과 미감을 나눈다.

릴레이전 24번째 작가로 폴 쥐르커의 전시를 개최한다. 폴 쥐르크의 작업들은 어떤 특정 범주의 프로젝트 안에서 작업을 진행한다. 그간의 작업들은 '몸 이미지'와 '외계인'이라는 언표로 마주치는 시각적 이미지를 연구하는 작업이었다면 이번 작업은 '외계인'이라는 대상을 토대로 그의 독특한 미적 견해를 펼쳐 놓는다. 마치 장난기 있는 제스츄어로 여겨질 법한 다양한 매체의 기용은 독특한 이미지로 재현된다. 페인트, 티셔츠, 소리, 수건, 라텍스에 그려진 텍스트, 색채, 드로잉된 이미지들은 어떤 공상과학에서 연출된 '외계의 흔적들'과 같은 불명확하고 불투명한, 불경스러운 또한 불확실성을 그 이미지에 도출해내는 것이다. 폴 쥐르커의 작업을 살펴보면 먼저 티셔츠 텍스트 작업 '나는 인간을 믿지 않아 I don't believe in human', '인간은 진짜가 아니다Humans aren't real' 등 외계인의 시각으로 인간을 조롱하는 혹은 인간을 비판하는 작업과 어떤 유기체의 세포와 같은 혹은 타액과 같은 라텍스 설치작업은 어떤 불온한 물성과 외계의 물성이 맞닿는 이미지로 재현하여 폴 쥐르커식 현대의 시각과 개념을 독특하게 은유하고 있다. ● 또 이번 전시에서의 초점은 그가 생각하는 몸, 미디어, 숭배에 관련하여 '외계인'에 유래하는 디지털정보를 입수하면서 그 정보의 흐름과 연구에 따라 이미지를 재배치하는 것이다. 그 재배치는 언제나 우리에게 모호하거나 불경스러운 시각을 '외계'라는 이미지로 은유하여 독특한 시각적 생성들, 의미들, 개념의 충돌을 자신의 이방인적인 언표로 재현하는 것이다. 폴 쥐르커는 다양한 매체와 물성을 자신만이 해석하고 연구한 '외계인' 시뮬레이션을 통하여 '이미지의 무한한 다름과 차이'를 제안하고자 한다. ■ 청주미술창작스튜디오

The exhibition deals with the topic "alien". The meaning is related to words like other, strange and foreign. According to etymonline.com "alien" is used in the sense of science fiction since 1953. The subject contains a lot of uncertainty. It is reflecting something without a verified material proof. It exists as a discours that is speculative. During time the interpretations change by stressing certain aspects or adding new ones. The focus of the exhibition derives associatively to "alien" concerning body, media and cult in connection to identity. It is an internet-based research project. The exhibition is an instalation including various media and materials like paint, t-shirts, sound, towels, latex, projections or generative video. It is augmented by digital information. ■ CHEOUNGJU ART STUDIO

My works have a project-specific basis. It is accompanied by theoretical and practical research. The way I work is intermedia. The medium can evoke the subject itself independently from the prior aim. That means to me that a playful approach can be connected to a research-based practice. Interdisciplinary work which includes collaborative projects is important because habitual thinking and spheres of action are in question. My artistic practice had a change by working in South Korea. Last year I had residency programs in Iksan and Incheon. in Iksan i worked to the melting of the digital and analog world through theoretical research and the use and combination of traditional and new media. In Incheon it shifted to questions concerning the blurring of lines and borders connected to the human body and its alien and outer parts. I have an interest in alien as subject being associated to different ideas surrounding cults and a postmodern desire for believe systems replacing metanarratives. It touches questions around technology and new media connecting to the human body as a discoursive sculpture. ■ Paul Zuerker
