거울상 자아 Looking Glass Slef

거울의 이중성은 거울의 탄생 이전에 물이나 물체에 자신의 얼굴을 비춰 볼 때부터 존재했다. 자아성찰과 자아도취, 자아상 확립과 분열은 모두 거울 속에 같이 존재해 왔으며 모든 시대에 함께 드러났다. 작가는 이러한 '거울'이 가지고 있는 반사성과 '거울상 자아'라는 이론을 바탕으로 인간관계와 더불어 우리의 일그러진 자아에 대한 이야기를 하고자 한다. ● 작가는 인간관계와 자아에 대한 연구를 하던 도중 '거울'에 비친 자신의 모습이 타인으로 비춰지는 미묘한 순간을 포착하여 작업의 방향성을 끌어갔다. 거울 속의 자신의 형상을 보고 내가 아닌 다른 사람으로 인식하는 분열의 단계를 경험한 후, 작가는 거울을 캔버스로 제작했다. 그리고 반사되는 직접적인 형상이 관음증적으로 자기 자신을 바라볼 수 있다는 새로운 시점을 관람자들에게 제시한다.

작가가 바탕으로 하는 '거울상 자아' 이론은 찰스 호턴 쿨리(charles Horton Cooley)라는 19세기 말에 활동한 미국의 사회학자에 의해 발표되었다. 그는 남들이 내게 기대하는 모습을 실제 자신의 모습으로 흡수하는 것, 이를 '거울상 자아(Looking glass self)'라 표현했다. 그는 자아인지란 타인과의 상호작용 속에서 타인이 나를 어떻게 인식하고 있는지 평가하느냐에 따라 형성이 되며, 타인이라는 사회적 거울에 비치는 모습을 반영한다고 설명했다. 쿨리는 어린 아이는 자신을 둘러싼 주변 사람들에게 비치는 자신의 파편들을 하나씩 주워 모아 내재화함으로써 자아 정체성을 형성해 나간다고 말했다. 또한 사람들은 성인이 되어서도 다른 사람들의 시각을 통해 자신을 바라보며, 반은 의식적으로 반은 무의식적으로 주변 사람의 기대에 부합하는 사람으로 살아간다고 한다. ● 작가는 '거울'에 비치는 나 자신이 나의 모습을 하고 있는 다른 사람이 아닐지 혹은 쿨리가 전달하고자 했던 남들이 원하는 사회속의 나의 모습으로 살아가는 빈껍데기의 형상은 아닐지 물음을 던진다. 우리는 많은 사람과 사회 안에서 인간관계를 맺는다. 그러나 각기 다른 개성을 가진 사람들 속에서 특정한 상대는 내 모습 중 아주 일부의 모습만 접하게 되고, 또 상대방은 내게 특정한 모습을 기대한다. 이러한 패턴이 굳어지면 우리는 상대가 나를 어떤 식으로 바라보고 있는지 파악하게 되고, 무의식중에 상대가 원하는 특정 모습에 부합하도록 행동한다. 그 사람의 눈에 비친 '나'를 스스로 흡수하여 내 자신의 일부분으로 삼는 것이다. ● 『Looking Glass Self』는 스칼라티움 아트스페이스에서 기획초대전이며, 강희영 작가의 4번째 개인전이다. 2011년 우연한 계기로 이용하게 된 거울이라는 소재를 통해 작가는 끊임없는 연구와 자신이 이야기하고자 하는 인간관계와 자아를 표현하고 있다. ■ 강희영

Duplicity of mirror have existed in reflections on water and other reflective surfaces before the invention of mirror itself. Self-examination, narcissism, and formation/dismantle of ego identity have existed in mirror through all era. This exhibition's artworks embarks from introspection of human relationship based on such reflectability and 'Looking Glass self theory'. ● The mirror, while its utilization was found during the research on human relationship and ego, is rooted in the author's conceptual framework in finding another ego inside the mirror. Fine-art drawn on mirror canvas reflects direct shapes, which is interpreted as a voyeuristic point of sight viewing oneself. ● 'Looking Glass self theory' by Charles Horton Cooley, a famous American sociologist during the 19th century, is a social psychological concept stating that a person's self develops from interpersonal interactions and the perceptions of others. He argued that self-identity is the result of the concept in which we learn to see ourselves as other's perceive. According to Cooley, young will collect the reflected perceptions of self during the interpersonal interactions with others and creates self-identity through internalization. Even in adulthood, they reflect themselves through others' perception of them; consciously or unconsciously living to fulfil the perception of their surrounding. ● This exhibition questions the audience whether her persona is a resemblance of society's expectation. As we interact within our society, we face expectation from others of ourselves to resemble their perception. Noticing such perception, our behavior tend to reflect what the society expect from us. We collect the reflected perceptions of self during the interpersonal interactions and build our identity. ● Hosted by Scalatium Artspace, 『Looking Glass Self』 is an invited exhibition of Artist Kang Hee Young. Through the author's 4th solo exhibition painted on mirror, audiences will discover her ideas about interpersonal relationship and self-identity. ■ KANGHEEYOUNG
