Ways of Seeing

인간이 인지하는 세상을 구성하는 데에 있어서 눈의 힘은 매우 강력하다. 눈으로 느끼는 '시각'은 다른 감각들을 압도하고, 우리는 보이는 것 안에서만 세상을 인지할 수 있다는 감각적 한계를 가지고 있기 때문이다. 그런데 1972년 출간된 존 버거(Berger John)의 『Ways of Seeing』은 서구 문화예술에 대한 전통주의적 시각에서 벗어나 우리에게 새로운 미적 시각을 제시한다. 또한 존 버거는 이렇게 새로운 시각을 제시함으로써, 한정된 우리의 시각을 자극하여 다양한 방식으로 예술을 바라볼 수 있는 기회를 열어주었다. ● 이 전시에서는 존 버거의 책 제목을 차용해, 동시대에 살고 있는 현대미술 작가는 어떻게 세상을 바라보고 예술작품으로 표현하는가를 이야기한다. 디지털기술이 고도로 발달한 현대사회에서 우리는 우리 스스로 만들어낸 너무나 많은 눈을 가지게 되었다. 이제는 고전이 된 망원경, 현미경에다 카메라, 컴퓨터, 드론, 그리고 다양한 영상 필터들까지 그 종류와 기능도 가지각색이다. 그리고 이렇게 탄생한 매체들은, 우리가 그동안 현실에서 인지하지 못했던 변형된 세상을 보여준다. 기술에 의해 변형된 새로운 세상을 '보는' 것은 우리의 상상력을 키워주고, 더 나아가 존 버거가 의도한 것처럼 세상을 보는 우리의 숨겨진 눈을 뜨게 한다.

이 전시는 우리와 다른 기억과 경험을 가진 자들이 우리가 인지하지 못했던 세상을 포착해서 예술작품으로 빚어낸 광경을 우리 앞에 살며시 펼쳐 보여줄 것이다. ● 『Ways of Seeing』展에서는 우리가 인지하지 못했던 시각으로 바라본 화면을 캔버스에 재창조하는 손서현, 신창용 작가의 작업을 통해 보는 이에게 생생한 시각적 유희를 전해준다. 손서현 작가는 현실에 존재하지 않는 초차원적인 공간을 표현하여 작가 자신만의 독창적인 방을 만들어 낸다. 디지털 매체에 의한 비현실적 공간과도 같은 방 속에서 관람객은 한치 앞도 내다볼 수 없는 미로를 풀어나가는 경험을 하게 된다. 신창용 작가는 드론을 통해 바라본 비가시적인 세상의 모습을 우리에게 보여준다. 하늘에서 내려다보는 세상은 아이들이 가지고 노는 레고, 모바일 게임 화면처럼 앙증맞다. 이와 같이 실제보다 작아진 세상을 지켜보면서, 현실 속 걱정거리들이 아주 사소한 것으로 느껴지는 경이로운 평온을 체험할 수 있게 된다. ● 이렇듯 두 작가는 자신이 만들어낸 비정상적인 화면을 지극히 평범한 1차원의 평면 회화에 현실적으로 빚어냄으로써 관객들을 프레임 내부로 깊이 몰입시킨다. ■ LIG 아트스페이스

The power of the eyes is extremely strong in forming the world perceived by humans. This is because 'vision' through the eyes overwhelms other senses, and we are limited to perceiving the world only within the framework of what we see. But John Berger's 『Ways of Seeing』, which was published in 1972, presents a new aesthetic vision for us that goes beyond the conventional perspective of Western culture and art. Moreover, by presenting such a new vision, John Berger has provided an opportunity for us to view art in various ways by stimulating our limited vision. ● Borrowing the title of Berger's book, this exhibition deals with how contemporary artists of our time view the world and express their ideas about it through artworks. In modern society with the advanced development of digital technology, we have come to have so many eyes that we have created for ourselves. There is a great variety of different kinds and functions, such as the classic telescopes and microscopes as well as cameras, computers, drones and various visual filters. And the media created this way show us a newly transformed world that we could not perceive in reality. 'Seeing' the new world transformed by technology promotes our imagination and opens our hidden eyes to see the world as intended by Berger. ● In this exhibition, people who have different memories and experiences from us will subtly provide us with views created by artworks by capturing the world that we have failed to recognize. ● The exhibition "Ways of Seeing" offers vivid visual entertainment for visitors through the works of Sohn Seo Hyun and Shin Chang Yong, who reinvent the views they have seen with the vision we could not recognize on canvas. Sohn creates her own original room by expressing a super-dimensional space that does not exist in reality. In the unrealistic room of digital media, visitors feel as if they are going through a maze where they cannot see beyond their noses. Shin shows us a non-visible world seen from a drone. The world looked down on from the sky is cute like Lego or mobile games that children play with. By seeing the world smaller than life, we can feel a wonderful serenity where our concerns in real life seem like trivial things. ● As such, the two artists realistically depict the abnormal scenes they created on an extremely normal one-dimensional surface, inviting the audience to become deeply absorbed in the frame. ■ LIG ARTSPACE
