지난 1년간, 작가 박수환은 전 세계적으로 영향력 있는 인물들의 초상을 그리고, 그들에게 발송하는 일련의 과정을 프로젝트로 진행했다. 그의 프로젝트는 서명(署名 : signature)만으로 개인의 영향력, 권력을 표출해내는 인물에 대한 관심으로부터 출발한다. ● 작가는 미디어의 영향력 아래, 대중적 인사로 손꼽히는 정치가, 연예인, 스포츠 스타, 성직자 10인을 선정하였다. 최종적으로 오바마(Barack Obama), 시진핑(Xi Jinping), 찰스 사치(Charles Saatchi), 빌 게이츠(Bill Gates), 크리스티아누 호날두(Cristiano Ronaldo), 프란치스코 교황(Pope Francis), 박근혜, 이건희, 유재석, 김정은의 초상화를 2점씩 제작하였다. 흥미로운 점은 우리가 흔히 알고 있는 유명 인사들이라는 것과 실물을 보지 않고도 수많은 이슈, 이미지, 텍스트, 영상을 통해 이들의 존재를 확신한다는 사실이다. 이러한 맥락에서 작가는 익숙한 저명인사, 대중의 영웅, 권력의 중심에 있는 인물을 초상의 주인공으로 선택함으로써 오늘날 사회·정치적 쟁점을 간접적으로 투영하는 면모를 보인다.

이번 프로젝트의 시작과 밀접한 관계에 있는 서명의 사전적 의미는 자신의 이름을 써 넣는 것 또는 본인 고유의 필체로 자신의 이름을 제3자가 알아볼 수 있도록 쓰는 것이다. 특히, 미술작품에서 서명은 작가의 정체성으로 직결되거나 오리지널리티를 보장한다. 박수환이 제작한 초상화는 모두 연필과 볼펜을 이용한 드로잉으로 완성된다. 작품에 강조된 각양각색의 필선은 그를 상징하는 기호이자 또 다른 서명이라 할 수 있다. 작가는 자신의 서명으로 대중의 영웅이자 권력의 중심에 있는 인물들의 표정을 그려냈다. ● 박수환의 프로젝트는 작가의 손을 떠나 작품이 전달되는 과정을 겪어야만 완결된다. 즉, 작품의 완성이 수신인의 선택에 따라 결정되는 것이다. 각 초상의 주인에게 배송된 작품은 '감사의 편지' 또는 '물건을 받을 수 없다'는 전화 외에도 다양한 경로를 통해 이들의 반응이 회신되었다.

작가가 일련의 과정을 수행하며 얻고자 하는 것은 무엇이었을까. 만약, 초상화를 받은 이들의 반응이 SNS 또는 대중매체를 통해 일반 대중들에게 전달되었다면 어떤 일이 일어났을까? 한순간 젊은 작가의 이야기가 유명세를 타고 일정부분 이슈가 됐을지도 모른다. 작가는 이 부분에서 상업미술계의 영민한 마케팅과 미술시장의 구조를 익살스럽게 표현하고자 의도한 것이다. ● 마지막으로, 젊은 작가 박수환의 작품세계가 끊임없는 열정과 집념을 통해 진화하기를 희망하며 글을 마친다. ■ 이채영

2015년 4월 30일. 나는 이건희, 시진핑(習近平), 찰스 사치(Charles Saatchi), 빌 게이츠(Bill Gates), 유재석, 박근혜, 크리스티아누 호날두(Cristiano Ronaldo), 프란치스코 교황(Papa Francisco), 버락 오바마(Barak Obama)의 초상을 만들어 그들에게 보냈다. 김정은의 초상은 끝내 보내지 못 하였다. 어떤 인물은 반송을 했고, 작품을 받았다는 사실이 확인되거나 고맙다는 답을 보낸 사람도 있었다. 우리는 직접 보지 못 했음에도 불구하고 미디어를 통해 이들의 말투와 걸음걸이, 웃음 등을 알고 있다. 그들은 명성, 이름, 서명으로 세계를 움직인다. 과연 실제로 존재 하는 인물일까? 나는 그들에게 종이와 펜으로 초상을 만들어 두 점 중에 한 점을 보냈다. 남겨진 다른 한 점의 작품과 보낸 과정의 기록들을 함께 전시 할 예정이다. ■ 박수환

박수환_반송된 작품들

Over the past year, artist Soo-whan Park conducted a project in which he drew portraits of influential figures around the world and sending the completed work to the models. His project departs from his interest in people who can express their own individual impact and power simply with their signatures. ● The artist selected ten public celebrities in the eye of the media, ranging from politicians, entertainers, sports stars, and clergies. The final line up consisted of President Barack Obama, Xi Jinping, Charles Saatchi, Bill Gates, Cristiano Ronaldo, Pope Francis, President Park Geun-hye, Lee Geon-hee, Jae-seok Yu, and Jeong-eun Kim, for whom he drew two pieces of portraits each. A point of interest is that we are convinced of their existence without even having seen them in physical presence based on their celebrity status, and through various issues, images, texts, and videos. In this context, the artist projects social and political issues of our contemporary society by selecting people who stand at the pinnacle of power, those who are familiar with the public through their influence, or known as the people's hero. ● The lexical definition of the "signature," the key concept and inspiration for the project, dictates that it is the written form of one's name in unique, personal style, made to be legible to third parties. Especially, in artistic works, the signature is directly connected to the artist's identity, and/or ensures the piece's originality. Park's portraits are all in pencil and ballpoint pen drawings. Varying lines, emphasized in the portraits, are signs and an alternative form of Park's own signature. He captures the facial expressions of people who are seen as heroes, standing at the center point of power. ● Park's project can only be completed through the process of the works leaving his hands and arriving in those of the models. That is, the completion of the work is determined by the choice the recipient makes. The works, sent to the models, generated various responses through a range of channels such as phone messages that "they cannot be delivered," or "letters of thanks." ● What was the artist trying to achieve through this process? What would have happened if the models' responses were released to the public through SNS or other mass media? The story of the young artist could have become a global news topic overnight. The artist was intending to depict the shrewd marketing tactics of the commercial art sphere, and the structure of the art market in a humorous tone. ● As I conclude this essay, I wish further success and future developments for Park the young artist through his unrelenting passion and determination. ■ ChaeYoung Lee
