여기, 멈춘 시선

반 세기 넘게 오롯이 한 길을 걸어간 한 사람이 내비치는 면면은 그것이 무엇이든 볼만한 가치가 있다. 사진가 박기호의 전시 '여기,멈춘 시선'은 그가 현재까지 국내에서 보여준 사진들과는 완전히 다른 측면을 내보인다. 30년 간 집중했던 인물 사진도, 번뜩이는 아이디어와 치밀한 준비 과정을 거쳐 제작했던 상업 사진도 아니다. 작가 앞에 펼쳐진 일상의 세상 속에서 그의 시선이 멈춘 순간을 포착했고, 그 순간은 그대로 고요를 담고 있다. 고요, 그것은 50여 년 삶의 궤적이며 쉰을 넘긴 한 인간의 사유이며 사고의 귀착점이다. 젊은 날의 치열한 부대낌을 거쳐 자연과 소통하는 가운데 얻은 고요다. 작가 박기호의 사진전 '여기, 멈춘 시선'에서 곰삭은 삶으로서만 드러낼 수 있는, 지극히 평범함을 담은 자연의 고요한 소리를 엿들을 수 있다. ■ L153 아트 컴퍼니

나는 30년 간 인물 사진을 찍어왔다. 자연을 담은 풍경 사진을 시도해 본 적이 거의 없다. 그저 나는 풍경 사진에는 감각이 없다고 여겨 왔다. 5년 전부터 미국에서 공부하면서 경제 침체로 문을 닫은 빈 가게들을 찍으면서 절실히 느낀 게 있다. 사진이란 사진가의 의도에 맞게 구도를 잡아 찍기 보다는, 장소든 사물이든 피사체를 만나고 대화하다 보면 저절로 그것들 스스로 자신을 내어 준다는 것이다. 그저 나는 그 자체를 카메라에 받아 들이면 되는 것이다. 풍경 사진도 그랬다. 나는 자연이 내어 준 것을 꾸밈없이 그들의 소리를 담았을 뿐이다. 자연스러워서 더 친근한 한지에 프린트 했다. ■ 박기호

"Here, Pause for the Unknown Discovery" Whatever it is, there must be something worthy of discovery for a photographer when he has consistently walked the same path for over half a century. Photographer Ki Ho Park's solo exhibition called "Here, Pause for the Unknown Discovery" contains a series of poetic photographs that are far different from what he has shown over the years. Unlike the glittering photographs that decorated covers of Time, Fortune, Madame Figaro and other international publications, these pictures of abandon yards, houses, and landscapes speak of unknown beauty that we often ignore. ■

About Ki Ho Park ● In 2007, after working as a successful photographer for over two decades, Ki Ho Park packed his bags and went back to the United States to achieve his goal for an MFA degree at RISD. For the next three years, Ki Ho traveled from coast to coast documenting empty storefronts around the United States. These poetic photographs spoke of the failing American economy. With his newly gained sensibility, Ki Ho Park has been documenting towns in Seoul that are deserted before they are demolished for new high-rise projects. Next summer, these photographs called "What People have Left Behind" will be exhibited in Richelieu, France,and our current show contains a few of those samples. ■ L153 ART COMPANY
