공존은 아름답다. 재생은 가치 있고 부활은 위대하다. 골판지를 집적하고 그 위에 채색을 하는 기법으로 우리의 도심과 거리의 풍경을 화려하게 변신시킨 이경림의 작품 앞에서 드는 생각이다. 작가 이경림은 작업을 통해부활의 조형을 실현하며, 그의 작품들은 재생의 가치와 공존의 의미를 환기시킨다. ● 수년 전부터 작가가 즐겨 사용해온 골판지는 포장용 박스를 위해 생산되는 것이며, 박스로 사용된 후엔 생활 폐기물로수거되어 재생을 기다리게 된다. 포장 운반의 수단으로 유통사업의 용재로 사용되는 골판지가 작가에 의해 작품의 재료로 차용되어 졌다. ● 단순히 캔버스를 대신한 것으로 등장하지 않고, 오랜 시간을 두고 잘리고 찢기고 집적의 과정을 거쳐 다양한 재질의 표면을 형성한다. 그리고 화려한 색채가 덧 입혀져 포장재는 대변신을 하게 된다.

작가가 변화시킨 것은 재료만이 아니다. 그동안 즐겨 다루어온 주제인 도시와 거리의 풍경 또한 화면 속에서새롭게 태어난다. 작가는 복잡하고 칙칙한 문명의 도심을 밝고 화려하게, 움직이며 살아있는 삶의 환경으로 재구성 한다. 작품 「공존」 에는 집들이 빼곡히 쌓여 산을 이루고 있다. 도심에서 밀려난 산동네의 전형적인 모습이 떠오른다. 고단한도심의 삶을 떠올리게 하는 풍경으로 늘 재개발의 대상으로 여겨졌으며, 작가들의 눈에도 연민과 우울, 소외의 단골 소재였다 ● 그러나 이경림의 도시 현실에 대한 시각은 매우 다르다. 작가는 메마르고 삭막한 외형적 모습 안에 담긴 삶의 이야기와 행복을읽어내며 바라보기 때문이다. 그것은 삶의 현실에 대한 긍정에서 비롯한다. 고층의 빌딩이건 아파트이건 산동네이건 사람들이 부대끼며 함께 살고 있는 공존의 도심을 아름답게 보는 작가의 낙관적 시각은 그래서 소중해 보인다. 골판지의 재생을 통해 도시 삶의 공존과 그 아름다움을 상기시키는 이경림의 작업에서 조형과 색채의 힘이 어떤 것인지, 한 작가의 전환된 시각과 발상이 우리로 하여금 얼마나 다른 눈으로 세상을 보게 하는지를 깨닫게 된다. ■ 오의석

골판지는 현대생활에서 대량생산 체제의 한 부산물이다. 구불구불 규칙적인 곡선으로 무엇인가를 품고, 옮기고, 필요한 곳에 다다르기까지 자신이 소임을 마친, 혹은 그것을 위한 포장재이다. 그것을 이용한 나의 작품에서의 골판지는 재생과 부활의 의미를 담고 있다. 사실, 물감이나 미디움을 사용하여 화면에 질감을 표현하는 행위만으로는 한계를 느낀다. 그래서 이 푹신하면서도 매력적인 무늬를 지닌 골판지를 가지고 화면을 짜깁기하듯이 붙이고, 그 위에 색을 입히며, 종이부조적인 표면을 만들고 있다. 자연과 함께 공존하는 사람과 사람들이 빈틈없이 밀착하여 공존하는, 마치 모두 다르면서 하모니를 이루어 하나의 곡을 만들어가는 아카펠라와 같은 이야기를 하고 있다. 각자 존재하는 곳에서의 적극적인 삶의 모습과 자세들을 밝고 활기찬 모습으로 표현하고자 한다. 이기적인 삶의 무기력함을 떠나서 서로에게서 존재 이유를 발견하며 함께 살아가기를 꿈꾸는 작업들이다. ● Coexistence 실존하는 부산의 감천동의 모습이다. 1950년대 이후, 지금까지 그 모습을 유지하는 기찻길 동네의 모습에서 꿈을 품고 평화롭게 공존하는 이상향을 그려본다. ● 통영 coexistence연작에서 다루어 온 밀집된 동네의 모습의 연장선에서, 바다와 하늘이 맞닿은 배경 위에, 산과 동네와 정박한 배들이 어우러진 모습을 한 폭의 현대 산수화로 풀어보았다. ■ 이경림

How beautiful is coexistence! How valuable is recycling! How great is revival! That is what I think in front of the works of Kyunglim Lee who gorgeously transformed the scenes of downtown and streets by the technique of accumulating corrugated boards and coloring over them. Artist Lee realizes the formative art of revival by her work, and her works of art remind the value of the recycling and meaning of the coexistence. ● Corrugated board, which Lee affected for years, is produced for packing case, which is collected after usage, being ready to be recycled. Corrugated board which is used as material for distribution industry is borrowed as material for works of art by Lee. ● Instead of simply replacing canvas, corrugated board forms diverse material surface through the process of being cut, torn, and accumulated for a long time. And after being covered with splendid colors, packing material go through grand transformation. ● What is changed by Lee is not only the material. Scenes of downtown and streets which Lee affected is reborn in screen. Lee reconstructs the complicated and somber downtown as brilliant, splendid, dynamic and alive circumstances of life. In 「Coexistence」, houses are tightly accumulated forming a mountain. It reminds typical mountain villages which are force out from downtown. It always has been considered as target of redevelopment and favorite subject matter of pity, melancholy, and alienation for the artists. ● But Lee's perspective on the reality of the city is very different. Lee reads and observes the stories and happiness contained in the dreary outward scene of the city. That is due to affirmation of life. Lee's optimistic perspective, which sees the beauty of the coexistence of downtown in which people live interacting together whether in high-rise buildings, in apartments, or in mountain villages, thus seems valuable. Through the works of Lee who reminds the coexistence of city life and its beauty through recycling corrugated boards, we can realize how an artist's changed perspective and way of thinking could make us see the world with different eye. ■ Ui-Suk, Oh

Corrugated cardboard is an inevitable by-product of modern mass production and transportation systems. The cardboard, with winding symmetrical curves on its surface, stands for its necessary usage in today's commercial society as a reliable packaging medium. In my work, cardboard that has tacitly and murmurlessly finished its role as containers, protectors, and transporters of mass produced goods symbolizes a regeneration and a revival. ● In fact, I feel fairly limited when it comes to using oil colors as a sole medium of expressing textures. Instead, I cut and form soft and attractive cardboard into small pieces and attach them together before adding the color and creating a sense of a sculpted paper form. ● In my work, a world of coexistence for tightly interrelated people and a gorgeous nature creates a harmonized "a cappella". In a world where individuals are destined to fall into a state of lethargy under a suffocating social structure, I believe my work quietly reflects my wishes to create a lively world where people find their purpose and meaning from one another. ■ LEEKYUNGLIM
