Sway. Shift

데비 헤세는 해조류에 대한 관심과 부산에서 찾은 소재를 접목하여, 진행중인 본인의 시리즈 '흔들림과 변화'를 새로운 임시설치미술이라는 형태로 창작하였다. 헤세는 미국 코네티컷 출신으로 홍티아트센터에서 입주 작가로 지내며 생선이나 신선식품 준비와 진열에 쓰이는 밝은 색채의 플라스틱 시장 바구니에 매료되었다. ● 작가는 전형적인 부산의 느낌이 담긴 바구니의 밝은 색채와, 빛이 통과할 때 만다라를 떠올리게 하는 잘라낸 모양에 흥미를 느껴 조명, 그림자, 그물망, 종이, 영상 등으로 전혀 다른 세상의 것 같이 낯설고 마치 수중과도 같은 환경으로 재형상화한다. ● Sway. Shift.는 작가의 고향인 브랜포드에서부터 부산까지 스쳐 지나온 관념과 경험의 혼합으로 보편적이면서도 특정한 장소에 대한 개인적인 명상을 창출한다. 시장 바구니와 수중 해조류 비디오 영상의 상호작용은 우리에게 성장과 소비의 순환을 제안한다. ● 헤세는 최근 코네티컷 예술국 2016 프로젝트 이니셔티브 지원금, 2013 로드 아일랜드 시각 예술가상, 코네티컷 시각 예술가 바다 지원금, 버몬트 스튜디오 입주 작가 지원금 등의 수상, 수혜 경력과 오리손 프로젝트 전시 및 입주 경력이 있다. 스미스 대학교에서 학사학위를 받았으며 뉴멕시코 대학에서 회화와 판화로 석사학위를 받았고 동대학 타마린드 석판인쇄연구소에서 연구원으로 재직하였다. 또한, 뉴헤이븐시 문화국, 코네티컷 대학교의 코네티컷 문화 관광 바다 지원 프로그램 위원회 등 여러 예술 관련 기관에서 토론자와 심사위원을 맡고 있다. 2012년부터 현재 사이트 프로젝트 위원회와 아트스페이스 시각예술 위원회 볼앤소킷팩토리 예술 이사회에서 역임 중이다. 폭넓은 전시 활동을 펼치고 있으며 브랜포드에서 남편과 개 두 마리, 닭 일곱 마리와 함께 살고 있다. ■ 홍티아트센터(번역_주연우)

Debbie Hesse creates a variation of her ongoing series, Sway. Shift, in a new ephemeral installation that combines her interest in seaweed with items she has found locally in Busan. Hesse, an international artist –in resident at Hongti Art Center from Connecticut, USA was drawn to the brightly colored plastic market baskets used to prepare and display fish and other fresh produce. ● Intrigued by their bright colors, emblematic of the spirit of Busan, and cut out patterns that evoke mandalas when light passes thru, the artist repurposes and reconfigures these baskets with cast lights, shadows, sheer scrim fabrics, paper and video to create an other wordly, unfamiliar, underwater like environment. ● Sway. Shift, a medley of fleeting notions and experiences from Branford where the artist is from) and Busan, generates a personal meditation about spaces both universal and specific. Market baskets and under water seaweed video footage interact to suggest the cycle of growth and consumption. ● Hesse recently received a 2016 Project Initiative Grant from Connecticut Office of the Arts, a 2013 Rhode Island Visual Artists Sea Grant Award, a Connecticut Visual Artist Sea Grant, a Vermont Studio Residency artist grant, and an Orison Project Exhibition and Residency. Hesse holds a B.A. from Smith College, a Masters in Painting and Printmaking from University of New Mexico where she was a fellow at Tamarind Institute of Lithography. She has been panelist and juror for many arts organizations including the Cultural Affairs Office for the City of New Haven, the Connecticut Commission on Culture and Tourism and the Sea Grant Program at University of Connecticut. She currently serves on the Ball and Socket Factory Arts Board, Site Project Board and Artspace Visual Arts Committee thru 2012. She exhibits widely and lives in Branford, CT with her husband, two dogs and seven chickens. ■ HONG-TI ART CENTER
