헛기술 Spectre-Technique

이정민 작가의 개인전 『헛기술』은 작가 한 사람이 걸어온 작업의 여정을 도드라지게 보이는 개인전이라는 양식에서 한 발짝 거리를 둔다. 이를 위해, 유령(Spectre)처럼 존재하며 작가의 전시에 관여하는 동료와 공간이 목소리를 낼 기회를 만들어 낸다. 이정민 작가의 작업을 보이는 것과 더불어, 작가의 동료인 디자이너 김형진, 작곡가 강이다, 큐레이터 장혜진과 박재용은 프로젝트 안에서 일종의 '등장인물'로 작가에게 그리고 전시 관람자에게 생각을 제시하고 대화를 시도한다.

개인전을 계기로 벌어지는 이 프로젝트는 '워크온워크 스튜디오'라는 사무실과 서가에서 진행된다. 이곳은 워크온워크가 다른 동료들과 작업 공간이자 작은 도서관으로 공유하는 곳으로, 이번 프로젝트에선 전시를 위해 공간을 비우고 덩그러니 작품을 놓는 대신, 일을 하고 책을 읽는다는 공간의 성격을 그대로 가져간다. 서가 한켠에 작가와 동료들이 고른 책을 두고, 작품을 감상할 공간을 만들면서도 여전히 하던 일을 할 수 있도록 공간 배치를 바꾸는 것이다. ● 『헛기술』은 전시를 한다는 것의 의미, 작가의 개인전이 가질 수 있는 의미를 묻는다. 작가는 전시를 통해 작품을 보일 때, 작가는 작품을 감상하는 사람들과 대화를 나누고 의미를 만들고자 한다. 전시의 제목 『헛기술』은 이정민 작가가 오랜 시간 고민해온 주제이며, 이 전시에 '등장 인물'로 함께하는 큐레이터, 디자이너, 작곡가 동료들은 작가의 첫 번째 관람객이 되어 각자의 방식으로 대화를 시도하고 의미를 함께 만들어 나간다. ■ 워크온워크

Spectre-Technique is a project that originates from a solo exhibition by Joungmin Yi, an artist whose primary medium is painting. The characters appearing in the project are: Joungmin Yi(artist), Hyungjin Kim(designer), Ida Kang(composer), Hyejin Jang(curator), and Jaeyong Park(curator). ● As a project, Spectre-Technique does not take the form of an exhibition that highlights an artist's development over a certain period. Rather, it attempts to generate a ground on which the artist's co-workers and the exhibition space itself – which usually exist in a mode close to spectre – can add their voices. ● For instance, Hyungjin Kim(designer) writes a very short novel of which the protagonist is the New Horizons, a space probe sent to Pluto. He also designs signs for windows of the exhibition space and runs a seminar on the uselessness of typography. Ida Kang(composer) creates 'a music for an exhibition space,' which is a result of his ongoing concern on the act of making music. Jaeyong Park(curator) become an interviewee of the artist, rather than interviewing the artist for an artist talk. Hyejin Jang joins a meditator that has been practicing meditation since the 1970s to organize a group meditation, attempting to find the 'walking-form,' a recurring concept in the artist's work. ● Spectre-Technique takes place at the Work on Work Studio, which is a shared office and library run by the curatorial initiative Work on Work. For the current project, the studio does not turn into a white cube; instead, it maintains its function as an office and a library during the period of the project. The artist and her co-workers select a small batch of books for the visitors to read and rearrange the space to both present the artist's works and keep the original function of the space. ● Spectre-Technique raises questions on the potential meaning of a solo exhibition by an artist. The project also reflects on the meaning of organizing an exhibition. When an artist presents her works in an exhibition, she intends to communicate with those that appreciate her creation and generate meanings. The title of the exhibition Spectre-Technique is a subject that the artist has long been investigating, and the co-workers that 'appear' in the project play the role of the initial audience of the artist. They try to communicate with the artist in their own ways and generate different meanings together with the artist and those that appreciate the project. ■ Work on Work

□ 부대행사 1. 얕은 지식 토크 / 박재용, 이정민 | 11월 28일 (토) 오후 4-6시 / 워크온워크 스튜디오 큐레이터가 질문을 던지는 대신 작가가 질문을 던지는 대담. 작가가 바라보는 작업 동료로서의 큐레이터와 대화를 나눈다. 2. 그룹 명상 / 장혜진 | 12월 초 / 히말라야 명상센터 그룹 명상을 통해 이정민 작가가 말하는 '산책-형태'를 찾아보는 시간. 서로 알지 못하는 개인들이 모여 함께 명상 속으로 걸어들어가 본다. 3. 헛기술로서의 타이포그래피 / 김형진 | 12월 넷째 주 중 / 워크온워크 스튜디오 전시 진행 기간 중 매일 특정한 텍스트를 골라 타이포그래피 작업을 하고, 워크온워크 스튜디오로 팩스를 보낸다. 마지막 날 즈음 그간 보낸 팩스를 확인하고 '헛기술'로서의 타이포그래피를 논한다. 4. 전시장을 지키는 작가 / 이정민 | 전시 기간 중 매주 토요일 / 워크온워크 스튜디오 매주 토요일, 전시 작가인 이정민이 전시장을 지키며 대화를 원하는 관람객과 이야기를 나눈다. 대화 내용은 간단한 메모와 스케치로 기록하고, 전시 종료 후 공유한다. 5. "헛기술" 프로젝트를 위한 음악 만들기 / 강이다 | 전시 기간 중 매일 / 워크온워크 스튜디오 워크온워크 스튜디오에 출근해 이정민 작가의 작업을 주제로 '전시 공간을 위한 음악'을 만들고, 전시 공간 안에서 악보를 선보인다. 6. 헛기술 서가 | 전시 기간 중 매일 / 워크온워크 스튜디오 작은 서가를 마련해 이정민 작가와 동료들이 워크온워크 스튜디오 내 라이브러리에서 고른 책을 소개한다.
