기대감소의 시대, 전혀 새로울 게 없는 새로운 시대의 징후와 전유 참조성의 '이미지 유희' ● Q 옥천박 _음... 작품들 이미지가 좀 시끄럽네요. (:-)) 큰 틀 안에 들어간 이미지의 군집이 어떠한 문제를 담은 것 같기도 하고 반대로 조잡하지만 장난이나 위트를 담은 것 같이 보이기도 한데... 어떤 연유로 이런 작업을 하게 되었나요? 지현 _ 글쎄요? 어떠한 특별한 이유가 있었던 건 아니에요. 저는 예술작품 이외에 다양한 이미지(사진)를 찾고 수집하는 취미가 있는데요. 그것이 갖고 있는 '모호성' 그 자체에 매료되어서 본 작업을 진행하게 되었던 것 같아요. 기록, 연출이미지든 광고, 소비이미지든 어떠한 가능성이 비춰지는 이미지를 발견하면 그것을 분해하고 재조합하여 다시 만들어진 모호함으로 또 다른 질문을 던지게 하는 거죠. 또 하나는 미술가로서 예술성이란 것에 대한 질문과 갈등이 작품제작에 한 요소로서 작용 했던 것 같아요. '미술(ART)'이라는 고급문화에 심취하면서도 젊은이들의 저항, 잉여문화라 할 수 있는 것들, 예를 들면 하위문화와 B급 감성들이 개인적인 문화적 취향이자 현실문제의 탈출구와도 같았거든요. 예전에 깊게 왔었던 슬럼프 때 작품에 대한 고민을 하다가 이러한 문화적 영향들을 적극 차용하기 시작하여 현재에 이르게 되었습니다. 한마디로 저는 미술관이 지루했던 것 같아요. 아직도 주류 예술은 너무나도 권위적이고, 제도(system)에 기생하는 특정부류의 '참을 수 없는 가벼움' 에 대한 반감도 컸던 생각이 작업을 진행하는데 결정적 계기가 되었습니다. 저의 작업은 현재 진행 중인 연구과제로서 탐구적으로 접근하고 있다는 것을 말씀드리고 싶네요.

Q 옥천박 _ '오만과 편견과 좀비'라... 저자 제인 오스틴(Jane Austen)에 '오만과 편견'이라는 동명의 고전 소설이 생각나네요. 그리고 좀비라는 단어... 진지+매니아(좀비 오타쿠 적)= '병맛' 느낌 나는 주제가 재밌네요. 이 3개의 단어를 이은 주제와 연작들은 무슨 관련이 있는 거죠? 지현 _ (:-D) 소설의 내용과는 아무런 상관이 없고요. 예전에 우연히 발견한 외국 드라마의 트레일러(trailer) 영상에서 가져온 '제목'이예요. '오만과 편견'이라는 고전 명작을 바탕으로 전혀 새롭게 재해석한 드라마였죠. 내용은 소설속의 주인공 3자매가 좀비헌터가 되어 팀웍을 이루고 좀비퇴치에 앞장서서 세상을 구해낸다는 다소 황당하고 엉뚱한 내용이에요. 이 영상을 보고 얼마나 웃었던지... (:-D) 하여튼 이 드라마는 고전의 명작을 B급 감성으로 재해석 했다는 점에서 저의 작품형식인 appropriation(전유=참조성의 작업)과 유사한 부분이 있어요. 또 하나는 오만, 편견, 좀비라는 단어 하나하나가 연작이 구성하는 알리바이를 함축해놓은 단어의 나열로서 맞아 떨어진다는 거죠. 주제와 연관지여서 작품을 감상하시면 좋을 거 같아요. The Era of Diminished E×pectation, Symptoms of a New Era that Have Nothing New About It, and the Play of Images with E×clusive Referentiality-Pride, Prejudice & Zombie ● Q Okcheon Park _ Hmm... I guess the image of the works is pretty loud. (:-)) Those images collected in a large frame seem to carry certain issues or to the contrary, seem to include some trick or wit that is crude... What made you do this project? Ji Hyun _ Well, I didn't have any special reason to do it. My hobby is to find and collect various (photo) images in addition to art works. I guess I took up this project because I was enthralled by its ambiguity itself. When I find an image that suggests some potential for records, created image, advertisement, or consumerist image, I take it apart and reassemble it, and I have some other question asked through ambiguity created with it. On the other hand, questioning and conflicting with artistic quality as an artist seems to have served as a factor in work creation. While indulging in the highbrow culture of 'fine art', I have turned to something like youth resistance and surplus culture, for e×ample, subculture and B-movie sensibilities as personal cultural preferences and an e×it from my pressing issues. Once facing a huge slump in my artistic career, I had soul-searching over my works and then I actively took up such cultural influences, and have reached where I am. In a nutshell, I guess I found art galleries boring. The fact that I found mainstream arts too authoritarian and I had huge resistance to 'the unbearable lightness' of certain people who were virtual parasites on the system. I want to tell you that my work is an on-going research project, which I approach in an investigative manner.. ● Q Okcheon Park _ 'Pride, Prejudice & Zombie' .... That reminds me of Pride and Prejudice, a classic novel by Jane Austen. And the word zombie .... Interestingly, I find it is a moribund combination of seriousness and maniacs (such as zombies and otaku). What connection should we find there between the theme and the series that relate the three words? Ji Hyun _ (:-D) It has nothing to do with the fiction plot. I took the title from a trailer for a foreign television drama I found incidentally. It was a drama that carried out a totally new interpretation of the classic, Pride and Prejudice. The plot, which is rather absurd and nonsensical, is that three fiction characters, who are sisters, demonstrate teamwork in taking the lead in e×terminating zombies, thus saving the world. You can't imagine how much I laughed to watch the video .... (:-D). Anyways, the drama bears some similarity to 'appropriation', the format of my work, in that it has rendered a B-movie reinterpretation of a masterpiece classic. One more thing is that all three words of pride, prejudice, and zombie go together as a series of terms that condense the alibi created by the series. You may as well connect to the theme as you enjoy the work. (From an interview with Mr. Park on Oct.)
