고양레지던시 오픈스튜디오 11: De-Position

일반적으로 작업실은 예술가의 삶과 직업 활동이 교차하는 사적인 공간으로 여겨진다. 그러나 작업실이 레지던시(Residency)라는 형태로 군집화, 제도화되는 경우, 공간은 동시대 혹은 지역의 표본 집단으로서 대표성과 공공성을 특정한 경향이 표출되는 창구가 된다. 『오픈스튜디오 11 : De-position』은 고양레지던시 11기 입주 작가들이 자신들의 작업실을 열어 입주 기간 동안의 창작의 결과물들을 대중에게 선보이는 전시이다. 전시는 부재로 쓰인 De-position의 반대(反) 혹은 벗어남(脫)을 의미하는 접두어 'De'와 위치를 의미하는 명사인 'Position'의 언어유희를 통해 오늘날 예술가들과 레지던시의 활동 양상을 압축적으로 드러낸다. ● 병렬연결된 'De'와 'Position'은 De-장소, De-신분, De-입장 등으로 의미가 분화된다. 이들은 각각 예술가들의 창작 방식과 태도라는 측면에 있어, 특정한 공간이나 가치에 얽매이지 않고 새로운 자아를 찾아 유랑하는 노마딕(Nomadic)한 삶, 제도나 관습에 의해 부여된 권위를 거부하고 새로운 방법론을 찾아 제시하는 대안적 접근, 자신의 행동과 의사를 하나의 관점에 구속하거나 외압에 의거하지 않고 자발적으로 주도해나가는 자유 의지로 개념을 확장해 볼 수 있다. 또한 'De'와 'Position'의 유기적 결합은 퇴적(堆積), 탁란(托卵) 등을 뜻하는데, 작가들의 예술적 고민과 사유, 실험과 탐색이 축적된 공간이자, 외부로부터 유입된 무한한 예술적 가능성들을 위탁하여 육성하는 창작의 인큐베이터로서의 레지던시의 성격이 함축적으로 담겨 있다. ● 급변하는 예술 환경 속에서 동시대적 기류를 살피고 정리하려는 시도는 내일의 진일보를 위해 매우 중요한 작업일 것이다. 『오픈스튜디오 11 : De-position』을 통해 작가들이 전하는 예술과 레지던시의 현재가 한국현대미술사에서 유의미한 사건으로 남기를 바란다. ■ 국립현대미술관 고양레지던시

In general, an artist's studio is considered a personal space due to it being a junction between the artist's private life and Professional activity. But when the studios are clustered together and institutionalized in the form of an artist residency, the space takes on a communal and representative characteristic as a sample group, and becomes a window for the expression of the tendencies of their contemporaries. 『Open-Studio 11: De-position』 is an exhibition where the 11th group of artists at MMCA Residency Goyang, unclose and reveal their studios to the public, presenting the fruits of their time at the residency. In the sub-title of the exhibition, De-position, the prefix 'De' which means opposite or departure is attached to the noun 'Position', revealing through the word play the aspects of the activities performed by today's artists and residencies. ● The Parallel connection of 'De' with 'Position', can be differentiated into various meanings such as De-location, De-status, and De-stance. In that these are each a method of creation and the demeanor of artists, their concepts can be extended to nomadic existence that is not tied down to any space or value but roams free in search of a new self, to alternative approach that rejects the authority of systems and conventions and presents a new methodology, and to free will to not be confined to a single viewpoint or fall under external pressure but lead their own actions and ideas voluntarily. In addition, the organic unison of 'De' with 'Position' represent sedimentation and brood parasitism which connotatively expresses the characteristics of a residency as an incubator of creativity, a space where the artistic contemplations and thoughts of the artists are accumulated and the immeasurable artistic possibilities that flow in from the outside are consigned and fostered. ● The attempt to study and organize the flow of contemporary art within the transient art environment is a work of great important for future advancement. We hope that the present-day art and artist residencies as is conveyed by the artists through 『Open-Studio 11: De-position』 remains to be a significant event in Korea's history of contemporary art. ■ MMCA Residency Goyang
