코리안 블루 웨이브 Korean Blue Waves

『코리안 블루 웨이브』展은 한국의 현대미술의 다양한 양상을 한자리에서 조명하고 국제미술계에 소개하고자 기획되었다. 특히, 전시참여 작가를 1970년대 한국태생으로 범위를 축약했는데 이것은 현재 40대 전후 작가들이 한국현대미술계에서 차지하는 자리를 환기하고 아울러 그들의 작업에 투영된 급변하는 한국의 문화를 되짚어 보고자 함이다. ● 한국의 40대 전후 세대의 작가들이 만들어내는 작업은 마치 보석의 다면처럼 역사적, 사회적, 문화적으로 과도기적 특성이 골고루 녹아있다. 아날로그 시대에 태어나 디지털 시대를 향유하고 있는 그들의 작업은 광복 이후 급변했던 70년의 시간이 만들어낸 사회적 배경처럼 우리의 전통적인 가치, 혹은 한국적인 정체성을 새롭게 해석하고, 새로운 시대의 상징적 구조를 만들어내어 현대의 가치로 변환하고 있다. 그 과정 속에서 우리의 전통적 가치는 현대미술 속에 내용적으로, 재료적으로, 화법적으로 새롭게 태어난다.

또한, 신진작가와 중견작가의 사이에 위치하고 있는 70년대생 작가들의 다이내믹한 작품을 적극적으로 소개하여 다양한 통로를 통해 자신의 미술적 영역을 능동적으로 확장하여 한국 현대미술가들이 국제미술계에서 활약할 수 있도록 한다. 국내외 신진작가 지원프로그램으로부터 자의적, 타의적으로 멀어진 작가들이 수많은 외부적 요인으로 인해 작업활동을 포기하지 않고 자신의 작품세계를 이끌어 나아가 중견작가의 반열에 도달하면 한국의 미술계는 더욱 풍요로워 질 것이다. 빠르게 변화하는 한국사회에서 끊임없이 자신의 뿌리에서 기인한 정체성을 찾고 작업으로 풀어내고 있는 15명의 청년작가들의 작품은 다양한 한국사회를 투영한 매력적인 한국현대미술의 스펙트럼을 보여주고자 한다. ■ 김선정

This exhibition was planned to review the diverse aspects of contemporary art in Korea and introduce them to the international art world. In particular, the artists participating in the exhibition are limited to those born in Korea in the 1970s, so as to determine the current position and status of artists in their 40s involved in the Korean contemporary art world and reflect on the rapidly changing Korean culture projected in their works. ● Works created by artists in their 40s in Korea thoroughly convey the features of historical, social and cultural transitions like the multiple sides of a jewel. As they were born in the analogue era and are now living in the digital era, their works newly interpret traditional Korean values or Korean identity in the context of a social background created by 70 years of rapid changes after liberation in 1945 from Japanese colonial rule, creating new values through new symbolic structures. In the process, our tradition values are reborn in terms of content, material and artistic technique within contemporary art. ● Moreover, by actively introducing the dynamic works of artists born in the 1970s who are somewhere between rising and middle-ranking artists, this exhibition enables contemporary artists in Korea to expand their artistic horizons onto the internatioanl art world through diverse channels. The Korean art world will be more enriched if artists who voluntarily or involuntarily seperated themselves from Korean and international support programs do not give up on their career due to countless external factors, and reach the level of artists of middle standing. The works of 15 young artists, who constantly seek identity in their roots amid the rapidly changing Korean society, will reveal the fascinating spectrum of Korean contemporary art that reflects the diverse aspects of Korean society. ■ Sunjung Kim
