산수입문(算數入門, 山水入門, De institutione arithmetica)은 나의 내면과 외면을 동시에 표현한다. 창문에 쓴 기호로 자신의 상태를 나타낸 '수학의 입문', 창 밖의 풍경을 인지하는 '풍경의 입문'의 두 가지 의미를 갖는다. ● 카메라를 현존하는 바깥 세계로 향할 것인가 아니면 내 영혼의 내부로 향할 것인가, 이는 현존하는 실제를 찍을 것인가 아니면 생생하지만 존재하지 않는 나만의 세계를 창조할 것인가의 문제가 된다. 항상 이 둘 사이에서 갈등이 일어난다. 그리하여 이 둘을 동시에 표현해 보기로 한다. ● 수학은 하나의 온전한 인간이 만든 아름답고도 깊은 세계임에도 불구하고 그저 단순한 하나의 기능이나 도구로만 여기다 보니 우리는 저마다 가슴 속에 강박증을 가져다 주는 이상한 수학을 안고 있다. 수학은 남을 속일 수도 없고, 남으로부터 속지도 않는 학문이다. 수학 속에는 기쁨도 있고, 슬픔도 있고, 번민도 있으며 즐거움도 있다. 갈릴레오는 "자연의 위대한 책은 거기에 씌여진 언어를 알고 있는 사람만이 읽을 수 있다. 그런데 그 언어는 바로 수학이다."라고 말했다. 이러한 수학의 기호들이 우리의 삶에 녹아 있는 모습을 발견한다.

우리는 살아가며 창을 마주한다. 그것이 실존하는 창이면 눈을 통하여, 마음속에 있는 창문이면 의식을 통하여 내가 존재하는 그 자리를 지각한다. 창은 내가 밖을 보는 수단의 하나이듯이 눈도 역시 세상을 보는 수단이다. 먼저 마음이, 그리고 눈이, 다시 창문이 세상과 마주하는 통과해야 할 관문들이 된다. 역으로 세상이 나를 보는 시각도 이러한 여러 필터를 거쳐서 관찰되고 평가되리라 생각한다. ● 마음의 상태나 순간의 감정 또는 그 상황에 어울리는 수학의 기호를 찾아 창문에 적고 다시 나를 관조한다. 그러면서 수학은 우리의 일상에서 먼 곳에 있는 것은 아니고 항상 나와 함께하고 있다는 것을 다시 깨닫는다. ■ 윤재경

'De institutione arithmetica' has two meanings when describing my inner self and the outer world: 'Introduction to Mathematics' as a sign written on the window showing one's status, and 'Introduction of the Landscape' to recognize the landscape outside of the window. ● I always have trouble deciding whether to focus my camera on the existing outside world or the inner part of my soul. In other words, this is a matter of taking a picture of reality or capturing my imaginary world which is vivid, yet not existing. Thus, I have decided to describe both of them together in one picture. ● Despite mathematics being a beautifully deep world made by humans, most people believe mathematics is difficult because people simply consider it as a tool to solve academic equations. However, mathematics is a very honest study which does not lie. In mathematics, there are joy, sorrow, suffering and happiness. Galileo Galilei quoted "Philosophy(nature) is written in that great book which ever is before our eyes but we cannot understand it if we do not first learn the language and grasp the symbols in which it is written. The book is written in mathematical language." Mathematics symbols help us to see meaningful things in our daily life. ● Every day, we face windows. Our eyes are the windows in which we perceive reality, whereas, our consciousness is the windows for our minds. As a window is a tool for me to look outside, my eyes are also a means to look at the world. MIND, EYES, WINDOW: these are the steps for us to go through to face the world. Conversely, I believe the perception towards me from the world would go through the same filter when observing and evaluating. ● I find mathematic symbols that describe the emotion and condition of my heart and write it on the window. When I look at the window and meditate, I realize once again that mathematics is not so distant from our daily lives, but is always close, keeping us company. ■ Yoon, Jaegyung
