가로로 드넓게 열린 창틀 밖으로 잔잔하지만 쏟아질 듯 펼쳐진 수평의 하늘과 바다, 자개의 은은하면서도 신비로운 빛깔 로 은유된 햇살은 김덕용 작가 내면에 깃든 풍경이다. 시간과 공간이라는 주제를 지속적으로 다루어온 그가 부산 소울아트스페이스에서 선보이는 신작에 처음으로 바다를 등장시킨 것은 자연스러운 시도로 느껴진다. ● 외부로부터 따뜻한 햇살을 받고 있는 실내에는 레코드 바늘이 홈을 따라 돌아가며 음악이 흐른다. 인위적으로 그린 것이 아닌 본래의 재료가 가지는 나무결을 그대로 살려 표현한 방 안의 모습에는 자칫 어둡고 무겁게 느껴질 수 있는 재료의 한계에 끊임없이 도전해온 작가의 장인정신이 배어있다. 나무는 종이보다 견고한 장점이 있지만 그만큼 단단하여 물감을 칠하거나 자유자재로 틀을 만드는 것이 쉽지 않다. 회화를 전공한 작가이지만 적합한 나무를 직접 수집하고 조각하며 자개, 단청 등의 다양한 공예술까지 더해져 이루어낸 화면은 견고함을 간직하고 있으면서도 다채롭고 화사하다. ● 단아하고 소박한 한국의 정서가 느껴지는 드로잉들은 과도하게 묘사되거나 지나치게 추상화되어있지 않다. 정갈한 백자 그릇 하나, 가지런히 개어진 이불과 같은 정물이 등장하는 일상의 풍경은 작은 부분도 소중히 다루어온 어머니들의 그리 운 손길을 떠올리게 하며 섬세한 감정들을 불러일으킨다. 나직한 지붕위에 물들어가는 잎사귀의 움직임, 매끄럽게 표현 된 따뜻한 나무결의 풍경 속에서 아련한 기억을 되찾아본다. ■ 소울아트스페이스

The calm and starry horizon dividing the sea and sky outside the widely open window frame. This scenic imagery of artist Duck-Yong Kim is shone brightly by the sunlight that is portrayed through pearly and mysterious colors of light. It almost seems natural that an artist, who constantly incorporated the theme of time and space in his works, has decided to focus on depicting the sea in his first private exhibition in Busan at the Soul Art Space. ● The record spins and produces music in a room that is lit by the warm sunlight. Refusing an artificial portrayal, the author uses the wood grains from the raw material to depict the interior of the room, and the dark and heavy limitations of the material, in turn, demonstrates the author's undaunted worksmanship. Wood has the advantage over paper because of its sturdiness but it also makes painting over the material that much more difficult. Kim has studied painting but he has also honed handicraft techniques by collecting and carving wood. As a result, the piece has retained the wood's sturdiness while adding a vivid and colorful quality. ● The drawings have touches of the simplistic and humble Korean sentiment and do not consist of exaggerated portrayals that are overly abstract. The still contains daily images such as reposed, white porcelain bowl and neatly folded bed sheets that evokes delicate emotions to viewers who are reminded of their mother's grace. One can find long-forgotten inner peace through the sceneries of colorful leaves above the low rooftops on well-polished wood grains. ■ Soul Art Space
