인간과 동물, 그리고 관계의 회복 ● 작가들에게는 누구나 자기 작업의 의미를 확고히 할 수 있는 계기가 있다. 그 계기의 순간을 귀중하게 생각하는 작가는 본인의 작업을 더 행복하게 수행하는 힘을 얻기도 하는 것 같다. 동물형상을 만화 캐릭터의 형식으로 풀어내어 작업을 하는 본인에게도 이 작업을 행복하게 계속 해 나가야겠다는 확신을 준 계기가 있었다. ● 2006년 여름 전시회 때문에 일본 동경을 방문한 적이 있다. 전시장에 전시된 작품 중 한 점을 팔에 안고, 사진기를 들고 동경의 명소를 돌아다니다 잠시 시간을 내어 우에노(Ueno) 공원을 방문했다. 푸른 숲이 우거진 공원의 이곳저곳에 마련된 작은 벤치에서 잠시 쉬고 있던 나는 건너편 벤치에 앉아 있는 통통하고 요염해 보이는 고양이를 발견했다. 마치 주인이 있는 고양이처럼 털에는 윤기가 가득했다. 아무런 기대 없이 그 고양이에게 "이리와~"라고 한국어로 말을 걸었는데, 그 고양이 녀석이 주저 없이 나에게 다가오는 것이 아닌가. 머리를 쓰다듬어 주니 더 다가와 내 손과 팔에 자기 몸을 비비고 잠시 지나는 행인들을 바라보더니 유유히 사라졌다. 다른 벤치에서도 마찬가지로 어느 고양이도 나의 손짓을 마다하지 않았다. 누가 보아도 길고양이라고 볼 수 없을 정도로 상냥한 그들은 나를 따뜻하게 받아들여 주었다.

일본에 사는 길고양이들은 한국의 길고양이들과는 DNA자체가 다른 느낌이었다. 한국의 고양이는 사람의 눈을 피해 허리를 낮게 숙이고 적을 피하는 것 같은 마치 박해를 받는 존재의 모습이라면, 일본의 고양이는 인간과 함께 살아가는 친구의 모습처럼 보였다. 어디에서부터 어떤 차이가 발생했는지는 알 수 없었지만, 한국에서 태어난 한 사람의 작가로서 알 수 없는 깊은 반성을 하지 않을 수 없었다. ● 길을 가는 강아지와 고양이에게 발길질을 하고 돌멩이를 던지는 사람들, 동물원의 코끼리 우리 앞에서 그들에게 과자대신 무심코 과자 봉지를 먹이로 주는 아이들, 그런 아이들에게 그렇게 하지 말라는 훈계 대신 자기자식 예쁘다며 사진만 찍어대는 어른들, 그런 우리네의 일상과 생각이 오랜 시간을 거쳐 우리나라 길고양이들의 머릿속을 바꾸어 놓았다. 내가 만들고 있는 동물 형태의 조각들은 모두 인체의 모습을 하고 있다. 얼굴은 귀여운 동물 캐릭터의 모습이지만, 몸통은 사람의 형상을 닮았다. 밝고 귀여운 외형으로 인해 과거에 잊고 살아왔던 동심으로 돌아가고자 하는 의도가 없지 않지만, 귀여운 얼굴의 동물들에게 사람의 몸과 같은 형태를 허락하여 그들과 우리가 어쩌면 하나가 될 수 있다는 이야기를 전달하고 싶었다. ● '관계의 회복'이라는 단어는 나의 작업에 있어 평생을 끌고 나가야할 화두로 생각하고 있다. 인간과 자연, 인간과 인간, 그리고 인간과 동물간의 회복 등 여러 가지의 관계의 회복을 염두에 두어 작업을 진행하고 있으며, 그 중 인간과 동물의 관계 회복을 형상화 한 작품을 통해 나의 작업을 마주하는 관객들과 함께 진솔한 이야기를 나누어 보고 싶었다. ● 작가의 작품 한 점으로 세상을 바꿀 수는 없을 것이다. 그러나 예술을 직업으로 삼는 작가들이 솔직하고 숨김없이 그들의 내면을 세상에 비출 때 비로소 사회 구성원은 그들과 함께 같은 꿈을 꿀 수 있는 것이 아닐까 하는 생각으로 글을 마무리한다. Restoration of relationship between humans and animals ● There are times when artists feel the solid meaning of their works. They will have the strength to perform their works more happily than before through such a moment. As one engaging in the work of creating a story for animation using animal characters, I happened to have such moment. ● In the summer of 2006, I was in Tokyo, Japan to attend an exhibition. In my leisure time, I decided to spend some time in a dense forest of Ueno Park. There, I found an unoccupied bench and took a rest. A plump, cute-looking cat sat on the bench opposite me. The cat looked in good shape, like one loved very much by the owner. I addressed him nonchalantly, saying, "Come here, baby." To my pleasant surprise, he came to me. I patted him on the head. He then went so far as to rub his body gently against my arm. He went away a few minutes later. I experienced a similar thing with several cats I came across in the park. They must have been stray cats, but they all looked in good shape and friendly. ● The stray cats I encounter in Korea are totally different. They become alert, ready to run away when someone approaches them, leaving the impression that such attitude is a result of long experience. On the contrary, Japanese cats seem friendly toward people, just like pet cats. I don't know where to begin to figure out the difference, but my experience with stray cats in the Tokyo parks made me feel deep remorse as a Korean. ● In Korea, it is not hard to find people kicking a stray cat or some children throwing a stone at it or offering empty bags instead of cookies to an elephant in a zoo, while their parents are busy taking pictures of their beloved children engaging in such acts instead of scolding them for doing so. After years of such practice, stray cats have come to regard people as those doing harm to them. ● The animal characters I make all have the shape of humans. They have the faces of cute animals but bodies of human beings. The cheerful and cute appearance lets us have a flash back to the time when we were little. I want to convey the message that someday, animals and people can become one, just like my characters. ● I view the restoration of relationship as a lifelong subject as expressed in my works. I perform my work of making animal characters in the shape of humans, keeping in mind the need for the restoration of relationship among people and between people and nature or animals. I want to exchange opinions frankly with the audience coming to see my works, which seek the restoration of relationship between people and animals. ● A few artworks cannot change the way people think. Still, it will be a good thing if artists disclose their thoughts in a straightforward manner and members of society join them out of a wish to create a better world. ■ NOHJUN
