Lamdromat

내가 살고 있는 이곳 미국은 다양한 문화와 인종들이 함께 어울려 사는 곳이다. 나는 이러한 사람들이 어울려 사는 모습을 빨래방에서 쌓여진 빨래를 통해 보았고 대상을 통찰 있게 보면서 물질의 본질과 기능을 구현해 내는 과정과 함께 다른 문화와 인종을 존중하고 각자의 삶의 형태를 이해할 때 나의 모습과 방향을 더 보게 되는 관점과 의미를 가지게 되었다. ● 미국에 유학을 온 2002년 이후로 일주일에 한두 번 빨래방에 가서 세탁하는 일은 미국 생활에서 가장 중요한 일이 되어 왔다. 어느날, 빨래방에서 쌓여진 빨래를 깊이 통찰 있게 쳐다보는 순간이 있었고, 그 속에서 나의 모습과 내 삶을 얘기할 수 있는 영감을 가지게 되었다. ● 옷들의 색상들은 다양한 인종의 얼굴색으로 보여 졌고, 여러 종류의 옷감 재질은 각각 인종의 다양한 문화와 성격으로 해석되어 느껴졌다. 그리고 반듯하게 개어진 옷들은 내가 살고 있는 사회에서 보편적으로 규정되어진 법과 도덕과 질서를 상기시켰다. 각각의 옷들은 그 나름대로의 독특한 색상과 스타일을 가지고 있고 스스로의 목소리를 내고 있지만 여러 개의 쌓여진 빨래는 그 보다 훨씬 크고 아름답고 조화로운 패턴을 이루고 있다는 것을 알게 되었다. 마치 여러 다양한 인종이 어울려 하나의 사회를 만드는 것처럼 말이다. ● 또한 빨래방은 그 자체로 독특한 의미를 가지는 공간이기도 하다. 단지 옷을 세탁 하는 장소일 뿐 만 아니라 미국사회를 구성하는 이민자이든 원주민이든 저마다의 사람들의 얘기들이 모여 있는 공간으로 태어나는 곳이기도 하다. 열심히 산 삶의 흔적들은 얼룩이나 때가 되어 옷에 묻어나며 이러한 옷들이 세탁되어 진다는 것은 단지 깨끗한 옷으로 결과 되어지는 과정을 넘어 그들이 가진 꿈과 희망을 다시금 새롭게 하는 상징적인 의미가 되기도 한다. 이러한 컨셉트를 바탕으로 작업 과정은 여러 가지 재료를 사용하며 다양한 방법들로 표현된다.

첫 번째는 옷감에 색상들은 물감의 색으로 다시 재탄생되어 사용된다. 각각의 옷들은 선택에 따라 순서와 색상과 패턴이 만들어 진다. 계획되어진 순서에 따라 선택되어 쌓여지기도 하고 때로는 즉흥적으로 작품 과정에서 만들어지기도 하는데 이러한 과정은 파렛트에서 물감을 섞고 만드는 과정과 같은 것이다. 게다가 언뜻 색상추상을 표현하는 형태로 나타나는 이미지 위에 미니멀적인 배치의 구성을 화면 속에 끌어들임으로써 평면에서 공간으로 확장시키는 시각적 효과를 주고 있다. ● 두 번째, 개어진 빨래는 작품의 배경으로 쓰인다. 배경이 된 쌓여진 빨래 덤 위로 얘기하고 싶어 하는 내용과 이미지를 집어넣는 과정이 이어진다. 쌓여진 옷감들의 자연스러운 형태는 여러 재미나는 곡선과 각각의 옷들이 가지고 있는 재질과 그리고 독특한 문양이 뒤섞이면서 그 자체로도 구성이 이루어지 진다. 그 위에 얘기하고 싶어 하는 이미지를 그려 넣거나, 겹치게 하는 것을 통해 쌓여진 빨랫감이 가진 특징과 주제가 어울려져 시각적인 흥미를 불러일으킨다. ● 세 번째, 쌓여진 옷들은 어떤 특정한 풍경을 그대로 표현하고 있다. 색조의 변화에 따라 겹쳐진 옷들은 푸른 하늘로 그려지고 밤하늘의 풍경으로 그려진다. 수많은 옷들은 물감으로 취급되어 그리고자 하는 풍경에 맞게 선택되어져서 표현되어지는데 옷들 작게 접거나 원하는 부분만 보이게 하는 연출을 통해 하나의 큰 풍경이 만들어진다. 옷감들의 색과 재질의 특징을 창의 적인 방법으로 표현하는 과정이다. ● 마지막으로 표현하는 작업과정은 다양성의 의미를 가지고 있는 이미지 - 동물들이나 곤충들이 어울려 사는 나무숲이나 꽃 그리고 여러 인종의 얼굴들-를 먼저 캠퍼스 위에 그려 넣는다. 그 위에 쌓여진 빨래의 형태를 가느다란 선으로 그린다. 곤충이나 동물의 모양과 형태를 옷을 만드는데 가장 기본적이며 필요한 요소인 실로 캠퍼스를 꿰매어 표현하는데 옷을 해체하며 깊이 통찰하는 과정에서 발견되어진 실은 색상의 시각적인 요소와 함께 서로를 이어주며 연결하는 실질적인 기능을 가지고 있다. 이러한 과정에서 표현하고 싶은 것은 쌓여진 빨래를 통해 본 다양성의 의미와 함께 공생하며 어울러 생활하는 공동체의 의미를 내포하게 되는 것이다. ■ 서성욱

America, my new home, is a land where people with all different races, cultures, beliefs, and personalities live together. I wanted to tell the stories of these people, and the harmony that exists by utilizing the clothes found at the Laundromat. It is my belief that by learning to appreciate the different people and trying to understand the textures of their lives, I will come to a better understanding of my own color, texture, and purpose. Upon my arrival to the United States in 2002, I have been going to the Laundromat at least once a week. It's become one of the most important tasks in my living. In the midst of my daily chores, I found the inspiration to tell my story in a pile of stacked up clothes. I saw in the clothes aspects of my life and the society that I reside in. The colors of the fabric symbolized the different races of people, while the various materials and textures reflected the different cultures, beliefs, and personalities. The neatly piled up clothes reminded me of the structure and order within our society. Because of this order, we are better able to enjoy freedom and individuality. Although each piece of clothing was unique with its own distinctive colors and style, it came together to form a harmonious pattern, just as the different types of people come together to commingle in our society. The Laundromat was no longer just a place to wash clothes, but it was a place that narrated the stories of the hard working people that make up our society, both immigrants and non-immigrants alike. Traces of their lives and stories were left on the clothes. As these clothes were washed and neatly folded, they came to symbolize the people's hopes and dreams for the future. This project was produced with several different aspects in mind. In the first way, the various colors in the clothes were treated as paint itself. Just as an artist would play with paint on a palette, distributing and combining colors to create a harmonious hue, the colors on the textile were treated the same way. The clothes were arranged and positioned to create a new shade, and photographs were taken. The process was very much like the process of working with paint on a palette. In the second way, the folded clothes were used as the background of the project. The subject matters portrayed in the foreground were the stories of my life that I wanted to share. The natural shape of the clothes not only fit the theme of the subject matter, but it also gave visual interest to the viewer. Lastly, the clothes were used to portray specific images. The reddening sky of the sunset or the glowing night sky were expressed by piling up clothes with corresponding colors. In effect, this was a process of creating another story using the color and texture combinations of the different clothes. ■ SEOSUNGWOOK(JAKE)
