나의 문양 작업은 한국전통에 대한 관심과 문양작업으로 전통문양을 계승하고자 하는 마음에서 비롯 되었다... 전통과 현대의 간극 속에서 움쳐려 들었던 전통문양이 새로운 활력을 얻어.. 현대에서 더욱 포편화 되는 찬란한 유산이 되었음 하는 바람이다... 또한 한국전통 문양의 편안한 아름다움과 조화로움, 화려함이 가장 한국적인 가치에서 가장 세계적인 가치로 자리매김 되길을. 바란다.... 우리의 문양이 시대의 패러다임으로 인해 지금의 현 시대 문화의 사각지대에 있다고 생각 한다.. 문양은 문화적 약속의 하나로서 그 시대의 문양을 통하여 우리는 예전의 사람들이 남겨 놓은 생활기물이나 의기(儀器)들과 대화를 나눔으로써 그 시대에 있었던 여러 가지 사건과 생활관습, 종교, 신앙적 사유관을 이해 할 수 있다....

나의 작품에 나오는 봉황, 동물, 물고기, 새, 학, 나비, 연꽃, 소나무 등 주술적이며, 상징성이 있는 문양으로... 주술적인 효력을 빌기 위한 방법으로 쓰여진 일종의 부적과도 연계가 된다 우리가 살고 있는 현 시대는 오래전 우리 선조들의 믿고 신봉하며, 추종 했던 미신, 주술을, 문양에 접목 시켰으며... 지금의 현대에서 미미하게 이어지고 있다. 나는 오래전부터 주술과 부적의 역할을 했던 문양을 ...작업에 도용함으로써 현대인들의 마음의 상처, 정신적인 고뇌를 치유 하길 바라며.... 나와, 이웃과, 사회와, 국가와, 세계가 함께 주술과 부적 보호와 장식의 본능을 함께 공유하며... 삶에 대한 희망과 소망을 염원 할 수 있었음 하는 바램이다... 또한 기존의 한국전통문양을 독특하고 색다른 기법과 현대적인 표현으로 재구성 하였으며, 작가의 철학과 정신을 교감 할 수 있는 작품이기를 소망한다.... ■ 고동희

My pattern work started from my interest in Korean tradition and my heart for succeeding traditional pattern through pattern work.. In the gap between tradition and modern, my hope is for the previously withdrawn traditional pattern to gain new energy.. and become a brilliant legacy that is generalized in modern times.. Also, I hope for the comforting beauty, harmony and splendour of Korean traditional pattern will go from being a Korean value to securing a place as a world-class value. I think our pattern is at a blind spot of modern culture due to the time's paradigm.. Pattern is a cultural promise, and through the pattern of a particular era we can communicate with the remaining articles and instruments of old and understand their various events, living habits, religion, spiritual grounds, etc.... The phoenix, animals, fish, birds, cranes, butterflies, lotus flowers, pine trees, etc., in my work all have some sort of magical meaning... and they are also connected with talismans that were used for magical effects. The patterns of our modern time harmonized a little of our ancestors' superstitions, magical objects and patterns... and those things are being carried on in the current times little by little. From a long time ago, I have been including patterns that have magical roles in talismans and magic, hoping that they will heal the heartache and mental strife of the contemporary man... Sharing the instinct of magical talisman protection and decoration with myself, my neighbors, society, the nation and the world... My hope is to wish for hope and faith in life...
