TEMPLE OF THE ARTIST

갤러리 기체가 오는 9월17일부터 10월 24일까지 서상익 개인전 『Temple of The Artist』를 개최한다. 2014년의 드로잉전 『소외한 자들의 공간』 이후 갤러리 기체에서 갖는 두 번째 개인전이다. 작가는 이번 전시에서 회화의 역사와 본질적 요소에 대한 고민을 풀어내고 있는 소품 연작 "화가의 성전" 70여점을 소개한다.

"화가의 성전" 연작은 2012년 무렵 인물 표현 연구를 위해 자투리 캔버스에 자신이 좋아하는 화가를 그리면서 시작되었다. 그가 처음 그린 작가는 게하르트 리히터였다. 우선 이 연작은 '근, 현대 회화에 대한 백과사전적 연구와 탐색'이자, 작가 자신만의 오마주이고, 컬렉션이다. 그는 이렇듯 최근 1년 동안 이 연작들을 본격적으로 그려나가면서 각각의 얼굴이 지닌 고유의 분위기와 색채에 주목하게 되었다. 또 작업이 거듭될수록, 그 동안 본격적인 회화 작업 안에서 그가 고민해왔던 공간과 인물 간의 상관관계에 관한 실마리 역시 얻게 된다. '회화의 역사' 안에서 전해져 내려온 회화적 요소들을 재인식하는 계기가 된 것이다. 그런 점에서 이 연작들 하나하나는 공간의 역할, 색들의 상호작용, 철학과 유희의 균형, 세계를 해석하는 입장 등의 요소들을 보다 자유롭게 수용하기 위한 작가적 고민과 수련의 흔적들이라고 할 수 있다. ■ 갤러리 기체

마치 그림을 처음 배우는 것처럼 이제 하나 하나 숙제들을 풀어가야 한다. 나와 이야기와의 거리가 가까워야 하는 것처럼, 붓질 또한 나와 가까워야 한다. 보다 나에게 편하고 자연스러운 붓질, 언젠가부터 고행하듯 행하고 있던 붓질이 아닌, 그때그때 아무 거리낌 없이 행해지는 붓질. 그 안에 내가 있을 것이다. 물론 하나의 언어로 굳어지는 것이 아닌 그 그림에 필요하고 그때의 나에게 필요한 붓질. 언어는 다양해지고 더 많은 말을 오해 없이 전할 수 있을 것이다. ■ 서상익

Gallery Kiche is pleased to present Temple of The Artist, an exhibition of small portrait paitings by Sangik Seo and the artist's second solo show with the gallery. As a painter, he has studied the painting itself through a way of encyclopedic research into the basics of painting while finishing of each work from Giorgio Morandi to Jenny Saville, about 70 painters from various backgrounds, schools and movements in art history. ● A series of Temple of The Artist has been started in 2012, as a study to have practices of portraying figures on leftover's canvas, is an homage and artist's collection. The first portrayed painter when he begun with this series is Gerhard Richter. With producing these works in earnest, Sangik Seo recognizes their unique colors as well as characters. It also makes him to get a sense about ways of brush stroke catchs of and specific interactions between spaces and people, which he has concentrated on constantly with his main work since he started his artistic career. Thereby, Temple of The Artist series is a trace of his artistic question of why he will be remained as a painter, of how he will get his own with essential things of the panting. ■ GALLERY KICHE

I must take the bull by the horns, as if I learn the painting itself for the first time. As I need to get closer to the story, a brush must be very next to me. Within brushing which is not doing it painfully, but doing it more easily, there is where I should be. It must be a brushing when I need to its appropriate stroke for each painting without hardening as a word in a definite mean. Just then, this may become diversified and conveyed more meanings without any misunderstanding. ■ SEOSANGIK
