인터위빙 Interweaving

『인터위빙 Interweaving』전은 아트 스페이스 펄이 나아가야할 중장기적인 비전인 '아시아 인터위빙'을 실천해 가기 위한 첫 전시이다. 이번 전시를 위한 주제로 삼은 '인터위빙'의 의미는 자연의 생명이 대지에 뿌리를 내리고 공기와 바람 그리고 햇살을 받으며 얽히고설킨 관계 속에서 공생하며 살아가듯, 인간의 삶 역시 가족과 이웃이 서로서로 사회적 관계를 형성하면서 개인뿐 아니라, 도시와 도시 국가와 국가 간의 다양한 관계망 속에서 얽히고설켜 상호 교환을 통한 확장과 순환을 통해 문화적 양식을 주고받으며 살아가는 것이다. ● 무엇보다 21세기 스마트폰 시대는 터치스크린을 통해 세상을 보고 정보를 공유하고 소통하는 시대이다. 이처럼 손안에서 무한정보를 얻을 수 있는 시대에는 개인과 지역사회 나아가 국가의 이미지가 더욱 중요한 요소로 부각되고 있다. 그러한 이미지는 개인 혹은 사회가 갖는 문화적 토양 속에서 호흡하면서 길러지는 자연발생적인 것일 때, 그 힘이 개인과 개인 나아가 사회와 국가의 문화적 토양 속에서 뿌리내린 대표 이미지가 될 수 있을 것이다.

이번 아트 스페이스 펄의 『인터위빙Interweaving』전은 개인이 생명을 순환시키는 호흡을 통한 삶의 리듬처럼, 다수가 살아가는 도시의 문화 예술적 환경 속에서 자신만의 독특한 개성과 매력을 가지고 세상과 호흡하는 작가 4인의 작품을 전시한다. 중국작가인 샨 정(Shan Zeng)은 종이와 먹의 호흡을 재료의 특성을 통해 선과 면의 구성을 통한 부드럽지만 강하고, 얕은 듯 깊은 설치작인 「구름」을, 일본의 아키야마 준(Akiyama Jun)의 「달Moon」, 「테이블」은 백토와 투명 유약이 불을 만나 빚어낸 섬세한 크렉(crack)이 질료의 존재감을 신비롭게 드러낸다.

그리고 김종구의 쉿 가루 회화(steel powder painting)는 강하고 무거운 쇠를 깎아서 글을 쓰거나 그림을 그리는 일명, '쇳가루 산수화'를 탄생시켰다. 쇠를 깎는(grinding) 것은 노동행위를 통해 형을 물질로 환원하는, 이른바 물질이 정신으로 정신이 다시 풍경이 되는 과정에 노동과 물질이 겹치며 생산되는 제3의 조각 혹은 회화의 장을 펼쳐놓았다.

김기수의 「달 Moon」은 스테인레스미러의 물성이 가진 특성과 녹슨 쇠와의 관계를 통해 보이는 것과 보이지 않는 것의 경계, 실재의 반영과 그려진 이미지 간의 착시를 조절해 가면서 그만의 조형적 울림을 만들어 간다.

이렇듯 이번전시는 질료와 노동행위가 결합되는 관계에서 작가적 행위가 개입해 들어가서 어떤 의미를 생산하게 되는지를 확인하는 자리이다. 이번 전시에 참여하는 작가들이 녹여낸 질료가 갖는 창작의 힘이 다양한 방식으로 스파크를 일으켜 신체로의 확장이 가능한 자연발생적인 삶의 토양이 예술로 승화될 수 있기를 바란다. ■ 김옥렬

'Interweaving' is the first exhibition organized as part of a long-term project of Art Space PURL, 'Interweaving Asia'. It is a title of an exhibition meaning that a human being has to build a healthy relationship with other people, such as family members, neighbors while living in a city and a country that are connected to other cities and countries to share various cultures with each other as all living things put down roots into the earth, coexisting with the air, wind and the sunshine. ● We live in an age of technological innovation, using a smart phone, through which we can see the world and share any information with each other by just touching the screen. Images of an individual, a community and a country are getting more important in an age of information. They are made naturally in the cultural background of each individual or that of a society while being interweaved to it. The power of the cultural background can make images that represent an individual or a society, growing firm roots in the culture. ● The exhibition organized by Art Space PURL, 'Interweaving' features with four artists who show the viewers their marked individuality and a great deal of charm, breathing in their own way to live in the cultural and artistic environment surrounding them and mingling with the mass society as naturally as an individual breathes to maintain his or her life. A Chinese artist, Shan Zeng, shows us an installation piece, 'Clouds', a composition that he makes with important elements of art, line and surface. With the effects of the mediums that he uses, such as ink and paper, he expresses clouds that seem to be strong and soft, shallow and deep at the same time. A Japanese artist, Akiyama Jun presents the mysterious texture of his clay works, such as 'Moon', 'Table', through the cracks made from the chemical activity of white clay and glaze. A Korean artist, Jongku Kim creates his own landscape painting, in which he writes or draws with steel powder that got through the process of grinding heavy, strong steel. To grind steel means to him that, through the labor of grinding steel, he can change a material into a form or a scene in the recurring process of materializing and spiritualizing. It is the third state of a sculpture or a painting, in which laboring and materials create an artwork. Kisoo Kim, a Korean artist who made a work, 'Moon', builds his own world of art by contemplating about the boundary between visible things and invisible things, an optical illusion caused from the relationship between a reflection of reality and an image that is drawn or painted with the effects of the materialistic features of his stainless mirror and rusty metal objects. ● This exhibition can be a field where we could find out how artists' act of making their works of art creates a meaning through a healthy relationship between their labor and the materials that they use. I hope the participating artists of the exhibition, 'Interweaving', sublimate the effects of their materials and their life in art. ■ Okreal Kim
