경계의 문화, 지역에 길을 묻다

문화공간 분홍공장이 문을 열었다. 강원도 홍천의 조용한 산기슭에 자리한 분홍공장은, 이곳을 감상적인 관념의 도피처가 아니라, 상이한 현실적 계기들이 첨예하게 공존할 수 있는 역설적 장소로 보고, 거의 모든 장소가 자본 자체이자 자본의 증식지가 되버린 도시에서는 쉽지 않은 예술적 상상과 실험을 시도하고자 한다. 따라서 분홍공장의 첫 사업인 국제 레지던스 프로젝트는, 공장이 속한 곳, 그 구체적인 지역에 대해 묻고자 한다. 계속 그 형질을 바꾸면서 지속되는 한국의 지역과 예술 사이의 특정한 함수 관계 속에서, 분홍공장이 경계와 지역에 대해 묻는다는 것은 무엇인가. 그것은 예술을 지역 발전의 수단이라는 틀 내에 가두지 않으면서도, 지역과 동상이몽의 분리된 폐쇄 공간을 만들어내지는 않고자 하는 것이며, 현실로부터 독자적인 예술의 고유한 영역을 고수하면서, 예술이 현실 속에 자리하고 있음을 잊지 않고자 함일 것이다. 그러니, 분홍공장은 마주한 현실과 대화하고자 하는 노력을 포기할 수도 없으며, 다른 현실을 꿈꾸는 것 역시 포기하지 않을 것이다. 현실에 대한 인식을 예술 영역에 끌어들일 수 밖에 없는 것이 인간 삶의 근원적 근심 때문이라고 한다면, 예술을 현실에 투사하는 것은 예술에 고유한 가상적 영역, 즉 모종의 상상력이라고 할 수 있을 것이다. 지역에 대한 근심과 상상의 사이에서 어느 한쪽으로 기울어지지 않는 긴장을 유지하며 나아가는 것, 그것이 올해 레지던스 사업 "경계의 문화, 지역에 길을 묻다"의 지향이라 하겠다. ● 올해 사업에는 국내외 11명의 작가가 초대되어 레지던스 공간에 거주하며 강원도 홍천 지역의 '지역적 특성을 반영한 공간과 소재를 대상으로 하는' 작업을 진행하고 있다. 아시아계 미국 작가로서 인종과 지역, 젠더 등의 경계에 대해 질문해온 크리스티나 리와 레아느 에스트라다는 홍천지역 커뮤니티와 협업을 통해 실재와 가상을 오가는 상거래 행위를 실험할 것이다. 이미지와 지역, 대중, 언어의 관계에 다양한 작업을 선보여온 위르겐 스탁(독일)은 홍천 지역민을 대상으로 특정 이미지와 홍천 지역 언어의 관계를 모색할 것이다. 사진을 주요 매체로 작업해 온 전수현, 조습, 판 쿠앙(베트남)은 각각 홍천 지역의 인공적 구조물, 역사, 농업 등을 대상으로 작업을 전개할 것이다. 회화 작업의 황세준, 김기수는 각각 고유의 방식대로 홍천 지역의 일상의 풍경을 통해 우리가 살아가는 현실의 표정을 포착할 것이다. 조각과 설치 등 다양한 매체로 작업해온 권동현, 용해숙, 정순호는 각각 홍천 지역의 공간, 일상, 역사 등에 대한 고유의 작업을 전개할 것이다. ● 이번 레지던스는 지역에 대하여 서로 다른 관점과 태도를 가진 작가들을 선별한 바, 개별 작업들의 상이한 미적 고유성을 정밀하게 드러낼 수 있을 것이다. 그들의 미적 탐구 및 활동의 예비 성과는 8월 15일 열릴 "오픈 스튜디오" 행사를 통해 공개될 예정이다. 오픈 스튜디오는 입주작가의 작업 외에도 지역민, 연구자와 함께하는 프로그램들을 구성했다. 레지던스 기간 동안, 분홍공장에서는 지역의 중학생들과 함께 마을의 일상, 역사, 사람을 주제로 아카이브와 스토리텔링을 구축하는 워크숍 "나의 마을이야기"가 진행되어 그 결과물이 오픈 스튜디오에서 공개된다. 그리고 지역 노인들의 기억을 통해 지역의 삶을 재구성하는 워크숍 "꿈꾸는 카메라"가 진행될 예정이다. 또한 심포지엄 "로컬리티의 재구성"에서 한국 근대의 정치적, 역사적 맥락 속에서 형성된 지역의 특수한 상황과 그 속에서 발견할 수 있는 어떤 계기들을 각계 전문가와의 대화를 통해 살펴본다. 레지던시 종료 이후 9월 24일에는 작가들의 최종 결과물을 보여주는 전시를 개최한다. 홍천군 화촌면사무소의 적극적 협조를 통해 재구성된 면사무소 창고는 그 자체로 지역과 예술의 접점을 드러내는 전시공간이 될 것이다. ■ 홍천지역문화공간 분홍공장

What is Pink Factory? ● Regional Culture Space "Pink Factory" is a collective of artists and cultural activists. With its various projects and in collaboration with different local groups, this non-commercial organisation tries to contribute to the cultural life in Hongcheon county (South Korea), a rural region that has been on the sidetrack of modernization for quite a long time. By excavating, re-creating, and documenting marginalized aspects of local life, the mission of Pink Factory is to stimulate an independent search for the various cultural identities peculiar to the region. ● Located in the rural province Gangwondo in the Northeast of South Korea, a one-hour car drive from the capital Seoul, the economy of Hongcheon county is mainly based on agriculture. Since the division of Korea in 1953, the region has been dominated by military activities surrounding large barracks, due to the close-by "Demilitarized Zone" (DMZ). At the same time, Hongcheon county lacks advanced educational facilities and prospects for employment. As a result, most young people leave for the capital or other cities after high school graduation. Hongcheon thus faces the problem of an ageing society (a concurrent phenomenon in Korea) and a further separation of the generations even more severely than the rest of the country. ● With projects that support mutual understanding and solidarity beyond generation gaps and an appreciation of the cultural roots of the region, Pink Factory tries to engage with this situation in creative ways. Of particular interest are the forms of life and culture that emerge outside of political, financial, and cultural centres, whether it is the Western world, the capital Seoul, or larger cities in the region. This way, the particularities of Hongcheon become the centre of our attention and a productive environment for guests from abroad. ● Founded by Korean artist Yong Hae Sook in early 2014, Pink Factory is a meeting place for artists from various Asian and non-Asian countries and local citizens of all ages living in Hongcheon.

Facilities and Supporters ● Pink Factory consists of two large studios, residency accommodations and recreational spaces. Located about 15 minutes from the town center of Hongcheon county, out in plain nature, the space offers a free and creative environment to engage artistically with the environment and the nearby surroundings. Several acres of forest and mountain, as well as a lake provide inspiration. The next village, Gulun-ri, can be reached on foot in a few minutes and offers basic necessities and bus transportation. ● Pink Factory also provides various gathering places for communal activities, workshops, seminars, exhibitions,performances, and meals that take place as part of the projects. Depending on the scope and the target audience, Pink Factory cooperates with other facilities such as the Hongcheon Yeonbong Library, the Hongcheon Culture and Arts Center or the Hongcheon Art Museum. Pink Factory receives support from the public Gangwon Art &Culture Foundation.

Activites and Projects ● The activities of Pink Factory follow two main artistic approaches: On the one hand, community art projects bring together artists with local organisations and individuals to engage in creative activities that reflect on the various ways of life in Hongcheon – yesterday, today, and tomorrow. On the other hand, a residency program that invites artists from within Korea and abroad allows for individual artistic research and practice, the results of which are discussed with the local public. Both approaches go hand in hand, in close collaboration between the artists and participants involved. ● Pink Factory was inaugurated with the pilot project "Looking for Hongcheon Central Market" in 2014. Students of the Hongcheon Girls' Middle School spent time at the main market of the town looking for its hidden "stories", which they recorded in the form of photographies, drawings and short anecdotal texts. These stories were presented to the public and a selection is on view as a virtual exhibition on the blog pink-factory.tumblr.com. ● In the summer season of 2015 the artist residency program will take place for the first time. About ten artists are invited to spend some weeks at Pink Factory and engage artistically with the natural, cultural, and social surroundings. The results of their artistic enquiries and projects are presented to the public in an "open studio" event in mid-August. The residency culminates in an exhibition that shows the creative responses of the artists to their experiences, research, and aesthetic undertakings in Hongcheon.

During the residency period, other events will take place. "My Hongcheon Story" (local history workshop for middle and high school students), "Images of my Dreams" (photography workshop for senior citizens), "Regionalism Today?"
