눈으로 볼 수 있는 것 과 없는 것, 내 작업은 우리가 실제로 보고 있는 세상과 눈에 보이지 않는 세상에 대한 고찰에서 시작된다. 현실세상과 정신세계와의 명확한 구분이 모호해 지고 있는 현대 사회에서의 인간으로서 느낄 수 있는 여러 감정들은 내 작업에서 가장 중요한 표현요소이다. 빛은 인간의 시각을 충족시켜주고 어둠은 우리의 마음을 풍요롭게 해줄 수 있다는 기본적인 생각에서 출발한 작업은 시간이 흐를수록 정신세계의 비중을 키워가며 지금의 표현방식으로 발전해 나아가고 있다. 단순해 보이는 그림의 형태들은 그려지기와 덥히기를 반복하며 그 세밀한 변화들을 캔바스 위에 표현해 나아간다. 작업이 완성되었을 때 형성된 수십 겹의 레이어는 인간의 삶의 흔적일수도, 현재의 모습일수도, 미래를 예견하는 실마리 일수도 있다. 작가가 보고 있는 세상과 관객이 보고 있는 세상이 정확히 일치할 수는 없겠지만, 내가 보고 있는 세상과 느끼는 감정이 관객과 소통하고 공감할 수 있다면 그것으로 작가로서 만족하고 행복해질 수 있으리라 믿는다. ■ 김창영

Contrast between light and shadow is the basic subject matters of my paintings. In my paintings, light substitutes for the actual world, and shadow means the spiritual world. I concentrate on painting the shadows of my hand because that shape is familiar to everyone. Moreover, people have a preconception about the shape of a hand. In showing the various images of the shadows of my hand, which are changed by light condition, I tell audiences that our environment provides diverse situations that are different from their normal lives. Even though the shapes painted on my canvas look like abstract expressions, they are actual forms that people can find in their lives if they are interested in the shapes of shadows. This expression is the way I show my intention to the audience. When I process my paintings, I spend a lot of time working on the surfaces of the canvases before I put color on them. I apply the gesso on canvases repeatedly and sand the surfaces. I repeat this processing until the surfaces can sensitively show the color that I will paint on them. After I finish the surface, I paint layers of tin oil colors on it, because the tin oil color, which is made to be mixed with turpentine, helps keep the surface smooth and clean. In this way I can express the layers in my paintings without texture. Usually my paintings overlap more than twenty layers of hand shapes and a background color. ■ CHANGYOUNGKIM
