BLACKOUT SCAPE

어린 시절부터 유달리 이사를 많이 다닌 나는 새로운 환경을 마주할 기회가 많았다. 처음 가보는 나라에 도착하여 공항을 나설 때면 낯선 환경에 설렘과 공포를 동시에 느끼곤 했다. 특별히 열대기후의 지역에 처음 가게 되었을 때에는 뜨거운 햇볕과 공기 때문에 숨이 막혔다. 그러나 서서히 적응하게 되었고 오히려 이전에는 본 적 없는 풍부한 색감과 짙은 온도에 둘러 싸인 놀라운 풍경을 온 몸으로 즐길 수 있게 되었다. 이처럼 많은 이들이 이전에는 상상할 수조차 없고 알지 못했던 것들을 실제로 경험해보고 즐기기 위해 익숙함을 벗어나 여행을 떠나리라 생각된다.

여행에 관하여 누군가가 모든 것을 계획해주던 유년기는 금세 지나갔다. 그 이후에 떠났던 여행들은 여전히 즐거웠지만, 감내해야 할 작고 대수롭지 않은 것들이 생각보다 많이 있었다. 떠나기 전 준비과정도 생각보다 오래 걸렸고, 여행 중에 기대했던 좋은 순간이 찾아오기까지는 많은 노력과 기다림이 필요했다. 예상치 못한 돌발 상황들도 있었다. 많은 것들을 포기하고 떠나온 여정 자체를 부정하고 후회하기까지 했다. 그러나 나의 일상으로 돌아와 여행에서의 시간을 돌이켜보면 불편했던 경험들은 이미 희미해져 있고 유쾌하고 아름다운 순간과 장면만이 또렷하게 남아있었다. ● 나는 나도 모르게 나의 감각에서 아름답지 못하다고 느낀 요소들은 제거하고 기억하고 싶은 장면들로 머릿속을 채워나갔다. 내가 느끼고 싶은 중요도에 따라 감각을 열고 닫았기에 실제와는 조금 다르게 조작된 풍경이 이미지로 남게 된 것이다. 이렇게 만들어진 단 하나의 인상적인 장면만 남고 나머지는 깨끗하게 지워지더라도 나에게 그 여행은 의미가 있다.

이번 전시에서는 나의 경험과 상상을 바탕으로 적극적으로 연출되고 편집된 이미지들인 「NIGHT FLIGHT」와 「BLACKOUT SCAPE」시리즈를 선보인다. 깊은 밤 높은 하늘에서는 아름다운 불빛들이 내려다보인다. 그 각각의 빛 안에서 다양한 사건들이 일어나고 있을 것이다. 이렇게 「NIGHT FLIGHT」시리즈를 통하여 전시를 찾은 이들이 마치 여행을 떠나온 기분으로 여러 장소를 거닐 수 있기를 바란다. 그리고 「BLACKOUT SCAPE」시리즈에서는 구체적인 시각적 형상이 다소 두드러졌던 이전의 작업과는 달리, 다채롭게 뿌려진 페인트가 화면 안에서 응집되고 해체될 때에 보여지는 분위기에 집중했다. 촉각이나 후각, 청각으로 풍경을 느낀다는 마음으로 작품을 감상할 수 있기를 기대한다. ■ 노상준

From a young age I moved homes quite often, and through this, I had many opportunities to face new environments. When I arrived in a new country and stepped out of the airport, I would feel both thrill and fear at the same time. Particularly, the first time I went to a tropical region I felt stifled from the hot sunlight and air. But I gradually became used to it. I began to adjust to new sights I've never seen before. In fact, I enjoyed with my whole body the marvelous landscapes surrounded by rich colors and deep temperatures. In this way, I think people escape familiarity and set out on a trip to experience the things they could never have imagined or known. ● My childhood days when somebody planned every part of the travel for me quickly passed. All trips I took since then were fun as usual, but there were small and trivial matters I needed to take care of. Preparing before the trip took longer than I thought, and waiting for the good moments I had looked forward to during the trip took a lot of effort and patience. There were even unexpected twists and turns along the way, and I began to regret the many things I had given up for the trip. But when I reminisced those moments once I've returned to my daily life, the experiences of discomfort have long been faint and only pleasurable and wonderful moments remained clear in my head. ● In spite of myself, I've eliminated from my senses the factors that I felt are not beautiful, and filled my head only with scenes I wanted to remember. Because I've opened and closed my senses according to the level of significance it had on my feelings, the landscapes I've invented remain as images slightly different from reality. Even if only one memorable scene from the trip subsists, and the rest are wiped away clean, still that is a meaningful trip for me. ● This exhibition presents "NIGHT FLIGHT" and "BLACKOUT SCAPE" series, images based on my experiences and imaginations that are earnestly produced and edited. The view from high up in the sky at the dead of night overlooks pretty twinkling lights. There must be various incidents happening within each light. In this way, I hope that those who find this exhibition will stroll through the many places of "NIGHT FLIGHT", as if they've come on a journey. And in the "BLACKOUT SCAPE" series, different from the somewhat conspicuous visual shapes of my previous works, I focused on the atmosphere created from the act of cohesion and breakup of colorful paint sprayed across the surface. I anticipate the viewer to feel the landscape with the sense of touch, smell, and hearing. ■ ROHSANGJUN
