접선 Fold Line

이번 전시 『접선 Fold Line』은 사진, 설치, 드로잉 등 여러 장르를 통해 새로운 형태들에 대한 탐구와 인간들 간의 상호관계에 관심을 보여 온 이은선의 개인전이다. 전시의 제목인 접선은 종이접기에서의 접는 선을 가리키는 동시에 만남의 의미도 함축하고 있다. 이번 전시에서는 신작을 포함하여 '종이접기' 사진 연작 여러 점이 소개된다.

이은선의 작업은 '땅따먹기'라는 게임에서 출발한다. 땅따먹기는 그어진 점 위에 선을 이어 가며 각자의 영역을 넓혀가는 아이들의 놀이다. 이 놀이를 시각적으로 보면 점과 점을 연결지어 선이 되고 선과 선이 만나 면을 이루는 형태들의 연속이다. 이것은 마치 자아가 타인과 관계를 맺고 자신과 관계되는 영역을 넓혀나가는 것과 같다. 이은선의 작업은 이러한 '관계 맺기'에 주목한다. 예술가 자신이 갖는 타인과의 관계는 예술작품에 온전히 담겨지고 그것을 경험하는 또 다른 타인의 생각과 얽혀진다. 이것은 마치 대화를 통해 타인과 소통하는 것과 유사하다. 이은선은 이렇게 예술작품을 매개로 타인과 공존하는 영역을 넓혀가는 것에 흥미를 갖고 있다.

이번 전시에서 소개되는 사진 연작 '종이접기' 역시 하나의 놀이에서 출발하여 인간의 관계 맺기와 같은 비정형의 형태들을 보여준다. 종이로 접어 어떤 대상을 재현하는 행위는 지향하는 방향과 의도를 담고 있다. 그러나 그것을 펼쳤을 때 대상의 형태는 사라지고 예상하지 못한 형태와 색감을 마주하게 된다. 조금씩 다른 넓이와 길이, 그리고 명암이 자아내는 형태에서 변칙적인 리듬과 우연이 만들어낸 조화를 읽어낼 수 있다. 이 형태 속에는 균형과 불균형, 대칭과 비대칭, 동일성과 비동일성이 모두 포함되어 있다. 이은선은 이것을 다시 카메라 앵글에 담는다. 종이를 접는 과정과 그것을 다시 펼치는 행위의 시간성이 모두 담긴 사진을 바라보면서 관람자는 다양한 층위의 감성을 일으키게 된다. 이와 같이 이은선의 작품들은 우리가 일상생활에서 만들어가는 타인과의 관계와 닮아 있으며 앞으로의 작업도 관계들이 만들어내는 의미에 대한 탐구로 향할 것이다. ■ 정소라

The 『Fold Line』 is Lee, Eun Sun's solo exhibition that shows her interest in interrelation of human and exploration of new forms through diverse genres such as photography, installations and drawing. The title of this exhibition implies the folding line of origami and also indicates the meaning of meeting. This exhibition includes new works such as the series of 'Origami' pictures. ● Lee, Eun Sun's works start from an old game called 'Hopscotch.' This game involves occupying more land space. Children often play this game by drawing lines through connecting dots and eventually expand the territory. In the visual perspective, it is a succession that a dot meets another dot and become a line, and again a line meets another line and become a face. This is similar to human that an ego meets another person and gradually expands the world which is related to him or herself. Like this, Lee, Eun Sun's works focus on formation of relationships. The artist's relationship with others is entirely immersed in the art and also get tangled with others thought who experience it. In other words, it is same as communicating with others by conversation. Likewise, Lee, Eun Sun is interested in expanding a coexisting area with others through art works. ● The series of picture works of 'Origami' introduced in this exhibition shows an atypical form such as human relationships starting from a game. Reenacting a certain object by folding paper indicates the aimed direction and intention. However, when it is unfolded, the object disappears and we encounter unexpected form and colors. It enables us to read a harmony generated by coincidence and irregular rhythm coming from slightly different area, length and shade. This form includes balance and imbalance, symmetry and asymmetry and identity and nonidentity. Again, Lee, Eun Sun puts this into a camera. The audience feel various layers of emotions by watching the pictures which deliver the process of folding papers and the temporally of unfolding papers. As such, Lee, Eun Sun's works are similar to building relationships with others in our daily life and the upcoming works will be a exploration of the meaning of relationship as well. ■ Jung, So-La
