몸과 혼 The Body & Spirit

아트스페이스펄 기획전인『몸과 혼』展은 '나는 누구인가?' 라는 질문에 답하기 위한 신체와 정신의 관계에 대한 시각화이다. 아트스페이스 펄에서 초대한 두 명의 사진작가인 료코 스즈키와 황인모의 사진작품을 통해 주목하고자 하는 것은 신체와 정신의 관계를 어떻게 이해하고 바라볼 수 있을 것인지에 대해 생각해 보는 것이다. 동서를 막론하고 '몸과 혼'의 관계는 디지털시대를 사는 오늘날에도 여전히 중요한 화두가 되고 있다. 육체는 무덤과 천국 사이를 연결하는 다리인가? 몸이 유한성을 품고 있다면 혼은 유한성 너머 불사(不死)인 무한성을 지닌 것일까? 이러한 질문을 담고 있는 사진작가 두 명을 초대해서『몸과 혼』이라는 테마로 전시를 한다.

일본에서 활동하는 료코 스즈키의 작품은 개인의 정체성에 대한 확고한 지시대상인 얼굴(작가자신)에 선택된 몸을 결합하는 사진이 전시된다. 작가 자신의 얼굴에 타인의 신체를 정교하게 결합하는 이미지는 자신의 얼굴(여성)과 타인의 몸(남성)을 바라보는 작가의 시선이자 사회적 욕망의 투영이다. 여성의 얼굴에 남성의 몸이 자연스럽거나 혹은 낯선 모습으로 결합되는 료코 스즈키의 사진은 인위적으로 만들어지고 또 관습화되는 신체에 씌워진 사회적 욕망을 지각하는 장소, 즉 보고(몸) 생각(정신)하는 차이에서 발생하는 실재와 비실재의 경계에서 몸과 정신의 해체를 통한 결합, 즉 나와 너의 차이 '몸과 혼(Spirit)'의 괴리를 품고 있는 몸을 제시한다.

황인모는 아무런 배경 없이 얼굴을 클로즈업한 무속인의 초상사진과 굿을 하는 장소에서 묵묵히 바늘처럼 서있는 무속인의 몸을 본다. 무속인의 초상과 무속인이 서있는 풍경사진(portrait & landscape photography)이라는 두 개의 시선이 하나의 작품으로 전시된다. 인물을 바라보는 작가의 시선은 피사체를 객관적인 시각에서 사실적으로 포착하고자 스트레이트(Straight)로 촬영한다. 이 초상(무속인)의 눈빛은 카메라 렌즈를 통과하는 과정이 거울에 비친 모습을 응시하는 가운데 거울이 있다는 것을 인식하지 못할 만큼 근접해 있다. 그리고 렌즈를 통과한 무속인의 눈빛은 마치 총알이 거울에 반사되어 피사체를 바라보는 눈으로 향해 되돌아 나오듯 찰나의 순간 '혼'을 향한다. 몸이 느끼는 눈빛이 의미하는 것은 무엇일까? ● '눈은 마음의 창'이라고 한다. 눈이 몸과 마음(Body & Spirit)을 연결하는 창이라면 몸과 혼은 유한을 초극하는 무한을 향한 순환의 고리인가. '몸과 혼'에 대한 이러저러한 질문에 저마다의 답을 찾아가는 시간을 가져본다. ■ 김옥렬

'The body and spirit', a title of an exhibition organized by Art Space PURL, is about visualization of the relationship between the body and the spirit to ask a question, 'who am I?' What we should pay attention to when appreciating these two photographers' works of art is that we get to think of how to understand the relationship between the body and the spirit. ● Although we now live in the digital age, the relationship between the body and the spirit has been an important issue in all over countries, east and west. Is a human body a bridge, through which one is led to the heaven from his or her grave? If we suppose that a human body is finite, is the spirit something that is immortal and infinite? Under a theme, 'the body and spirit', we have organized an exhibition of these two photographers who ask questions mentioned above through their works of art. ● A Japanese photographer, Ryoko Suzuki makes her works of art by compositing pictures of her face, which is an apparent referent of personal identity, and another person's body that she chooses to use for her work. An elaborate image that is composited of her face and a body that belongs to another person is a reflection of her social desire and her artistic insight into her face as a female and another person's body as a male. By dismantling the body and the spirit, she talks about the boundary between the Real and illusion. The composition of a woman's face and a man's body that looks natural and strange at the same time represents somehow an artificial body that is adjusted to society and contradicts the spirit, telling us about the differences between one and the Other and symbolizing a place where one perceives his or her desire caused from social convention. ● A photographer, Inmo Hwang makes close-up portraits of a Mudang`, a spiritualist in Korean shamanism, and landscape photography of shaman dance rituals, in which the body of the Mudang stands still like a needle. A portrait of a Mudang and a landscape photography of a standing Mudang are exhibited together as one work of art viewed from two perspectives. In the form of straight photography, his eyes turning upon the Mudang capture him directly to depict his subject matter as objectively and lively as possible. While getting through the lens of his camera, the Mudang's gaze is close to the lens enough to make him forget about the fact that he is looking at himself reflected in the lens. Then, he gets toward spirits right at the moment that he feels his gaze returning to himself as a scene of a flying bullet reflected in the mirror. What does it mean that a body feels one's gaze? ● The eyes are the windows to the soul. If the eyes are the windows that connect one's body to his or her soul, are the body and the soul the loop of circulation that goes toward the world of infinity? I hope the viewer can find his or her own answer to various questions about the body and spirit while appreciating these two photographers' works of art. ■ KIMOKREAL
