Healing MOSAIC, 1부_상처 바라보기

일흔이 넘은 한 여인의 손, 그 위에 깊이 패인 주름과 상처들을 바라본다. 그것들은 우리에게 흉측하게 다가오지 않는다. 오히려 그것들은 우리에게 따뜻한 사랑의 흔적으로 다가와 우리의 상처를 끌어안아줄 것만 같다. 왜일까…? 아마도 그것은 그녀가 누군가의, 혹은 우리 모두의 어머니이기 때문일 것이다. 우리는 그녀의 손에 깊이 패인 주름과 상처들로부터 어머니의 사랑을 보고 있는 것이다. 다시 말해, 우리는 그 깊은 주름과 상처들로부터 어머니의 사랑을 추상(abstract)해 낸다. ● 이 전시는 정현의 조각작품과 평면작품, 그리고 홍상현의 사진작품으로 구성된다. 두 작가의 작품들은 우리에게 상처난 것, 버려진 것, 그리고 쓸모를 다한 것 등의 '상처'들을 보여준다. 하지만 그것들은 두 작가의 예술적 표현 안에서 변형되어 있다. 조각과 사진이라는 예술언어 안에서 그 상처들은 상처를 넘어서는, 그리고 본질을 향한 물음으로 변형된다. ● 작가 정현의 조각작품들은 세월에 흐름과 그 역할의 수행으로 인해 상처난 쇳덩어리, 버려진 침목과 잡석들을 모아 조각의 언어 안에서 변형한다. 그리고 이러한 작가의 개입은 새로운 외형과 함께 상처의 본질을 드러내기도 한다. "제 몸을 갉아먹을 정도의 혹독한 시련을 견뎌온 파쇄공에서 상처 많은 우리네 모습, 질곡의 현대사가 떠오르지 않습니까? 잘 겪어낸 시련은 언제나 아름답습니다." – 정현(서울경제 인터뷰 2014)

홍상현은 정현과는 또 다른 상처를 우리에게 보여준다. 그가 보여주는 상처는 세월의 흐름에서 생겨난 상처가 아닌, 민족상잔의 비극이 만든, 우리 역사의 한 사건과 그 결과로 생겨난 상처이다. 2010년 11월, 서해의 작은 섬 연평도에 떨어진 북한군의 포탄은 수많은 포화의 흔적들을 남겼다. 작가는 상처로 남아버린 그 흔적들을 고스란히 카메라에 담았다. 그가 보여주는 것은 연평도 포격사건 직후에 많은 미디어에서 우리가 보아왔던, 참상의 상황과 그 현장이 아니다. 오직 그 상처들만을 작가는 바라보고 있다. 그리고 그 조각난 상처들을 바라보는 우리는 그 조각들 하나하나를 넘어서서 어느덧 우리 현실의 본질을 바라보게 된다. 작가는 이러한 자신의 사진을 '추상적 다큐멘터리 사진'이라 말한다. ● '상처'에 대한 두 작가의 예술적 표현은 우리로 하여금 그 상처들을 '바라보게' 한다. 그리고 그저 바라볼 뿐인 우리의 태도는 그 '상처 바라보기'의 과정에서 우리가 묻고 있는 본질을 추상하도록 한다. 이 전시는 두 작가의 작품을 통해서 우리의 세계와 그 상처들을 바라보고, 그 안에서 우리 스스로를 치유하는 예술적 성찰을 추구한다. ■ 장서희

■ Healing MOSAIC 대한민국은 어느덧 세계 13위의 경제 대국이 되었다. BBC의 한 기사에서는 한국이 2020년에 세계 5대 경제 대국 안에 들어갈 것이라고 전망하고 있다. 1970년대 초에 '잘 살아보세'라는 구호를 내건 새마을 운동이 시작된 후 반세기만에 우리는 이러한 비약적인 성장을 이루어낸 것이다. ● 그렇다면 우리의 삶의 질 또한 그러한 성장을 이루었을까? 우리가 느끼는 행복 또한 그만큼 커졌을까? 아니다. 오늘날 우리의 삶의 질과 행복은 오히려 위로를 받아야 할 정도로 피폐해져 있다. 그것을 반증이라도 하듯이 최근에 '치유(흔히 힐링healing이라 이야기되는 정신적 치유)', '명상', 그리고 '자연' 등이 사회적으로 큰 화두가 되고 있다. 고도의 경제성장을 위해 달려온 우리 사회는 '치유'가 필요한 정도로 인간 정신에 문제를 일으켰고, '명상'이 필요한 정도로 정서적 불안을 야기했으며, 또 '자연'을 그리워해야 할 정도로 주변 환경을 어지럽혀 놓았다. 이제 우리의 삶은 위로를 필요로 하고 있다. ● [LIG 아트 스페이스 한남_studio L] 개관전시인 『Healing Mosaic』는 오늘날 우리 사회가 필요로 하는 '힐링Healing'을 주제로 제시하면서, 예술작품과 예술적 경험을 통해 그 치유가 이루어질 수 있는 시간과 공간을 만드는 것을 목표로 한다. 따라서 오늘날 예술적 위로가 필요한 우리의 삶의 모습을 세 가지 파트로 나누어 보여준다. ● 1부 | 상처 바라보기 - 정현 홍상현 2부 | 타인과 타인의 대화 - 유목연 이지현 3부 | 피터팬 신드롬 - 손현수 전병철 ● 이 세가지 테마는 모두 2인전의 형태로 구성되는데, 각각의 전시에 참여하는 작가들은 모두 다른 장르의 표현을 하는 작가들이다. 그리고 각 테마는 젊은 작가와 중견 작가로 구성되며, 세대와 장르를 넘나드는 그들의 표현들은 그것을 바라보는 우리로 하여금 우리 삶의 모자이크를 조립하는 예술적 상상력을 불러일으키게끔 할 것이다. 그리고 이 과정에서 우리는 우리의 삶을 성찰하고 그것으로부터 세대를 아우르는 위로를 받을 수 있을 것이다.

Part 1_Looking at Scars-Chung Hyun_Hong Sanghyun ● We see the deep wrinkles and scars on the hand of a woman over the age of seventy. They do not look so ugly to us; rather, we encounter them as traces of warm love, because she is a mother. Perhaps we feel our own mothers' love from the deep wrinkles and scars on her hand. ● This exhibition consists of Chung Hyun's sculptures and flat pieces along with Hong Sanghyun's photographs, all which reveal 'scars'. They show us things that are wounded, discarded, and expired; but they are all transformed in the artistic expressions of the two artists. The scars are transformed into questions of essence in the artistic languages of sculpture and photography. ● Chung's sculptures are collections of masses of iron wounded by the passage of times and the role they have played; discarded sleepers and rubbles that are transformed within the language of sculpture. Such intervention of the artist reveals new shapes as well as the essence of the scars. "Don't you see our scarred lives and ordeals of modern history in the ball of iron that has been through severe hardships that chipped away its own body? Well passed ordeals are always beautiful." –Chung Hyun, Seoul Economic Daily interview 2014 ● Hong shows us scars that are different from Chung. What Hong shows us are not scars from the passage of time but from an event of our history and the consequences created by the tragedy of fratricidal war. November 2010, the bombardments by North Korean forces on the small island of Yeonpyeong Island off the west coast of Korea left countless traces of shellfire. The artist captured on camera the traces that now remain as scars on film. What he shows us are not the situation and site of the horrors immediately after the event, which we have seen in the media. The artist looks only at the scars. And as we look at those fragmented scars, we reach the point where we see the essence of our existence beyond those fragments. The artist refers to the photographs as abstract documentary photographs. ● The two artists make us abstract the essence from the artistic transformation, which is a form of artistic expression. As we see the process of abstraction in this exhibition, we ask ourselves of the essence of the world and seek artistic introspection to heal ourselves. ■ Sahie Zang

■ Healing MOSAIC South Korea has become the 13th largestec onomy in the world. ABB Carticleforecasts that South Korea will be one of the top5 economic powers by2020. After only half acentury since theearly1970s Saemaul Movement (New Village Movement) under the slogan"Let'slivebetter,"South Korea has achieve dextraor dinary growth. ● Then, has the quality of our lives also achieved such rapid growth? Has the happiness we feel increased relatively? No. Our quality of life and happiness have rather become so exhausted in the efforts to achieve economic success that we must be comforted. In response, the concepts of 'healing' (spiritual), 'meditation,' and 'nature' have recently emerged as important in our lives. Having struggled through a remarkable economic growth, our societal pressure has caused so many problems to the human souls that need 'healing', emotional anxieties that need 'meditation', and so many disruptions to the environment that people long for 'nature'. Now, we are in need of comfort in our lives. ● 'Healing Mosaic,' the opening show of the LIG ART SPACE Hannam, presents the theme of 'healing' that our society needs today. The goal of the exhibition is to create time and space where such healing can received through the appreciation of artwork and by enjoying artistic experiences. Accordingly, the exhibition divides the aspects of our lives that need artistic consolation into three parts. ● Part 1 | Looking at Scars—Chung Hyun, Hong Sanghyun Part 2 | Conversation between Two Others—Yoo Mokyon, Lee Jihyun Part 3 | Peter Pan Syndrome—Son Hyunsoo, Jeon Byeongcheol ● These three themes are all in the form of duo exhibitions, and the artists participating in each of them are involved in different genres. Each theme is portrayed by a pair of a young artist and a veteran artist. Their expressions, crossing over generations and genres, will arouse our artistic imagination in assembling the mosaics of our lives. In this process, we will be able to reflect on our lives and bring comfort to all generations of our time.
