대체 교사_Todd Holoubek (2015) ● "나는 끊임없이 책장을 뒤지면서도 내가 원하는 것을 좀처럼 찾을 수 없었다. 하지만 그 가운데에서 나는 내가 한 번도 물어보려고 생각조차 하지 않은 것들에 대한 답을 찾았다. 그 해답은 나를 새로운 방향으로 이끌었고 내가 원래 생각했던 것들보다 훨씬 더 가치가 있는 발견이었다." (『Rainbows End』, Vinge, Vernor) ● 사람마다 배우는 방식이 다양하기 때문에 교육은 여러 형태로 나타난다. 또한, 우리가 끊임없이 발전함에 따라 교육 또한 끊임없이 진화한다. 우리가 새롭게 알게 되는 모든 정보는 우리가 여태까지 보아왔던 것들을 넘어선다. 모든 것이 비슷비슷한, 소위 ctrl+c, ctrl+v의 요즘 사회는 끊임없이 탐구하고 관찰하던 시대로부터 변해가고 있다. ● 이 작품은, 학교교육 과목에 맞춰 모아진 인터넷 정보가 오락적인 요소만으로 구성되어 16개의 학교책상에 그래피티의 형태로 보여진다. 교실의 맨 앞에는 종이로 만들어진 세로 2.8미터, 가로 1.8미터의 거대한 얼굴 형태가 교사를 대체하고 있으며 학생들의 책상에 보여지는 그래피티와 동일한 비디오가 얼굴 형태에 비춰진다. ● 작가는 "대체 교사"라는 작품을 통해 인터넷으로 얻어지는 무분별한 정보에 대해 비판, 인터넷 정보가 사람들의 관심을 끌지만, 우리의 진정한 교육을 담당할 수는 없다는 것을 강조하고 있다. ■

SUBSTITUTE TEACHER_ Todd Holoubek (2015) ● "I've gone hunting in the stacks, I've seldom found exactly what I was looking for. You know what I did find? I found the books on close-by topics. I found answers to questions that I had never thought to ask. Those answers took me in new directions and were almost always more valuable than whatever I originally had in mind." (Excerpt From: Vinge, Vernor. "Rainbows End.") ● Education arrives in many shapes and forms because all learn differently. Education is evolving. We are evolving. Our accessibility to information surpasses anything we have ever seen. Our copy and paste society is replacing discovery and contemplate. In many cases the information is never absorbed, but rather placed in its proper place and passed to the teacher. ● Internet content is gathered on a variety of subjects. Regardless of it's pertinence or factualness, it is presented across 16 high school desks as student's desktop graffiti. At the front of the class is a 2.8 meter by 1.8 meter giant paper craft head representing the substitute teacher. In relation to the desktops, video that corresponds to the desktop graffiti is projection mapped to the head. ● Substitute Teacher is an exploration in learning through internet searches and wandering across disparate links. What catches the artists eye, what is designed and presented well. What is difficult to read or absorb. Substitute Teacher does not replace the traditional teacher. The Substitute Teacher offers the unusual view of the world. Common subject matter presented differently, in a way we may never see it ourselves. These lessons are as valuable, if not more than our normal lessons. The internet is our substitute teacher. ■
