낭만주의 시대의 예술가들은 창작에 있어 개인의 천재성이 중요했고, 그들은 밀실과도 같은 개인 작업실에서 캔버스나 벽 등 제한 있는 장(場)에서 창작을 했다. 그러나 오늘날의 예술가들은 좁은 예술 활동에서 더 나아가, 행동의 장 또는 삶을 총칭할 수 있는 체험의 공간에서 창작을 한다. 그렇기 때문에 그들이 창작하는 데 '나(의 천재성)'뿐만이 아니라, '나의 이야기를 들어줄 사람, 같이 할 사람, 영향을 줄 수 있는 것' 등 너무 많은 것들이 중요해졌다.

레미 쇼뱅(Rémy Chauvin, 1913-2009)은 "서로 아무런 관계도 없는 두 존재의 비평행적 진화"라는 말을 하는데, 이 말은 서로 다른 이들이 만나 함께 어울리는 공동체가 인간 자아를 형성하는 중요한 조건이라는 것이다. 인간은 자기 해석적 동물이고, 그들의 해석은 다른 자아들과 공유할 수 있는 관계 속에서 발견되기 때문이다. 더불어 사회학자인 찰스 테일러(Charles Taylor, 1931~)도 "인간은 태어나면서부터 사람들과 더불어 살며, 사람들과 대화적 관계 속에서 자기 정체성을 확립한다. 그러한 인간은 고립된 원자적 존재가 아니다."라고 언급한다. 역시 개별성을 띄는 존재들이 서로 연계하고, 변이하고, 변화하며 상호 작용함이 중요하다는 뜻을 품고 있다.

예술을 창작함에 예술가들 역시도 마찬가지이다. 작품은 결국 예술 언어이고 언어는 소통하기 위해 존재하기 때문에 나 아닌 누군가와 있길 바란다. 문을 열어도 어느 누구도 없을 것 같고, 부르면 아무도 나오지 않을 것 같은 건물 안에서, 예술가들은 술 한 잔 하며 친해지고 가볍게 이야기하다 작업을 보여주며 진지하게 이야기하고, 조언해주고, 노하우들을 알려주며 상호 도움과 영향을 준다. 지금 당장 이곳에서 결과물을 완성하기 위해 초를 다투며 개인의 밀실 안에 있는 것이 아니라, 다른 예술가들과 교류하고 영향을 주고받는 행위가 중요한 것이다. 예컨대, 미술도 패션, 비즈니스, 정치 등이 될 수 있다고 생각하고 대량 생산 방식을 차용하여 작업했던 앤디 워홀(Andy Warhol, 1928~1987)은 그의 작업실을 '팩토리'라고 불렀다. 그 공간에는 많은 미술가들, 에디터들, 음악가들, 유명 인사들이 모여 작업했다. 그리고 젊은 여자들과 천재들, 아주 세련된 사람들, 콜걸, 사기꾼, 큐레이터, 수집가, 최고의 예술가 등으로 가득했다. 언제나 열린 문 안으로 들어오면, 이곳은 사람들에게 마술과 같은 장소였다. 그들의 문화는 오히려 외부로부터 열광 받게 되었고, 하나의 새로운 문화를 보여줄 수 있었다. 많은 사람들이 만나고 창작했던 이 공간은 작업을 하는 공간이자 바로 삶으로 연결될 수 있는 장소일 수 있었다. 즉, 이제는 예술가들에게 천재성이 모든 것을 대변하지는 않는다. 그들이 창작을 하게 되는 삶의 다양한 원천들, 그리고 개인들 간의 만남과 융합, 실험도 중요하다.

2014년 11월부터 시작하여 근 2개월 간 진행된 공모와 심사를 통해 선발된 9개국(한국, 독일, 이스라엘, 일본, 태국, 터키, 프랑스, 핀란드, 헝가리)의 예술가들은 다양한 문화, 다양한 학문, 다양한 무엇인가와의 교류를 통해 삶 속에서 예술이라는 것을 만들어나가고 있다. 이번 '프리뷰전'에서는 대표 작품을 통해 (우리 삶을 진지하게 사유하고, 예술 언어로 직언하는) 입주 예술가들을 소개함은 물론, 함께 모여 작업하는 '레지던시…'의 중요성을 함께 알리고자 한다. 더불어 영감과 원천이 될 수 있는 것들 중의 하나인 '책'을 예술적 방식으로 보여주고자 한다. ● 관람객은 이번 전시에서 『왜 여기 예술가들이 모여서 작업하는가?』, 『예술가가 삶 속에서 포착한 관심사가 무엇이고, 우리는 어떻게 예술 언어를 해석할 수 있을까?』, 『예술가들의 관심은 무엇인가?』 등을 생각해보며 관람할 수 있을 것이다. 즉, 예술가들이 작업실에 갇혀 고독하게 작업하는 것이 아니라 수많은 사람들을 만나고 삶과 교감하여 작품을 만들고 있음을 한 번 생각해볼 수 있을 것이다. ● 저기 저편 건물에 있는 인천아트플랫폼의 6기 예술가들은 지금도 묵묵히 창작을 하고 있다. ■ 인천아트플랫폼

The artists during the Romantic era put more emphasis on the genius of the individuals in the process of creation, and they created artworks by using the limited means in the private workroom like a secret room, such as canvass, wall. But, today artists do the artistic activities in the arena of artistic action or experience spaces where could be the generic term for life beyond the narrow artistic activities. That was why it was important for them to lay more stress on the other things, such as 'the people who listen to me, work together, and the things which influence on them' as well as 'me (the genius)' in the process of creation. ● As Rémy Chauvin(1913-2009) once said: "Non parallel evolution of two beings who have nothing whatsoever to do with each other". This means that the community where the different people meet and go along with each other is the important prerequisite for forming the human ego. That is because the human being is a self-construal(self-interpreting) animal, and the interpretation could be found in the relationship which could share with other people. Sociologist Charles Taylor(1931~) also mentioned that "Human beings live along with people by nature, and establish their own identities in the dialogic relation with people. Such a human being is not an isolated nuclear entity." This mention also implies that it is important for the separate presence to connect with each other, mutate, transform and interact with each other. ● The same is true of the artists in the process of creation. Because the artwork is ultimately an art language, and in essence, a language exists to communicate with other people. Therefore, artists also hope to be with someone but me. In the building in where no one is when you opens the door, where no one answer the door, the artists talk it over a drink, get acquainted with each other, show their artworks to the others, talk about their artworks seriously, advice, inform the know-how for creation, help each other, and affect each other. ● For example, Andy Warhol(1928~1987)) thought that the art could be fashion, business, politics and accordingly, worked on a mass production basis. On this account, he called his workroom as 'factory'. Many artists, editors, musicians, celebrities were gathered there and worked with him. The 'factory' was packed with the young women, geniuses, very sophisticated people, call girls, swindlers, curators, collectors, top artists. If they went inside through the open door, there would turn into a place like magic. At last, outside people are enthusiastic about their culture, and it became one of the new cultures. The reason for this is that the place where many people met and created together could be the space where they work and connect directly with the life. That is to say, today, the genius is not everything in creating the art. Rather, it is also important that they meet, fuse, and experiment with the individuals and various sources of life which they create. ● The artists from 9 countries(South Korea, Germany, Israel, Japan, Thailand, Turkey, France, Finland, Hungary) who chosen through the contest and screening process conducted from November 2014 to January 2015, are doing the creative activities in their life through the exchange with various cultures, disciplines and things. ■ 인천아트플랫폼
