"나는『The Idea Factory for Living in the Forest』연구소에서 내가 꿈꾸던 숲 속 생활을 위해서 어떤 것들이 필요할지 연구해보았다. 인간중심의 편리함보다는 불편함과 즐거움이 공존하는 장치와 도구들을 구상하였다. 제작 과정 중 설계와 시행착오, 엉뚱한 상상들을 창조주의 특권처럼 누리며 작업하는 행위와 과정들 역시 가상 연구소의 즐거움 중 하나이다." (최병석)

최병석은 어린 시절부터 영화나 책을 통해 숲 속 생활을 동경해왔으며, 그의 작업은 이를 실현하기 위한 수단으로 캠핑을 즐기며 떠올린 엉뚱하고 장난스러운 상상력에서 시작된다. 작가는 이상적인 숲 속 생활을 위해 가상 연구소『The Idea Factory for Living in the Forest』를 세우고, 본인이 연구소장이 되어 다양한 장비를 설계 및 제작한다. 작가는 유년 시절 즐겨 봤던 미국 애니메이션「Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner」에서 주인공 코요테가 로드 러너를 잡기 위해 가상 연구소를 설립하고 해학적 도구를 설계하는 모습에서 영감을 얻었다. 작가에게 캠핑은 복잡하고 불편한 생활을 즐기기 위한 것으로, 그는 편리한 장비들이 즐비한 새로운 캠핑 문화를 따르는 대신 기존의 방식을 추구하며 마치 오래 전부터 숲 속에서 살아왔던 것처럼 생활한다. 대자연 속에서의 자유롭고 낭만적인 숲 속 생활을 꿈꿔왔지만, 사실상 자연은 무분별한 파괴와 안전사고로 인한 법적 규제로 다수의 영역이 제한되어 있었다. 최병석은 이러한 제약에도 불구하고 본인이 오랫동안 꿈꿔온 숲 속 생활을 재현하기 위해 기발한 아이디어를 제시하고 새로운 형태의 다양한 장비들을 만들어 나간다.

이번 전시는 최병석 작가의 첫 개인전으로 원시적인 방식을 따라 제작되어 구조가 번잡하고 실생활에서는 사용되지 않을 것 같은 기괴한 발명품을 선보인다. 고기 구울 때 나온 돼지 기름을 활용한「Lard Candle Maker」(2015)는 깡통에 넣고 녹인 기름을 케이스에 부어 양초를 만드는 장치이며, 보우드릴(Bow drill)로 불을 붙이는 원리에서 착안한「Fire Maker」(2015)는 보우를 움직이면 나무가 돌아가고 장치 하단의 홈이 있는 나무와 마찰을 일으켜 불을 만들어 내는 점화장치이다. 또한 작가는 벌레를 유인하는 도구, 동물의 배식 시간을 알리는 타이머 등 자연 속 동·식물을 위한 다양한 장치를 개발하였다.「Mole Control Stick」(2015)은 농업 피해를 최소화하기 위한 두더지 퇴치장치로, 청각이 발달되어 소음 및 진동에 민감한 두더지를 포고 스틱과 나팔 혼을 이용해 땅에 진동을 가하고 소음을 발생시켜 쫓는 장치이다. 나무 박스로 벌레를 유인해 잡는「Bug Catcher」(2015)는 벌레를 잡아 다시 생물 본래의 서식지인 자연으로 돌려 보내기 위한 도구이다.

또한, 식생활에서 사용되는「Egg Timer」(2015)는 전자 제품을 사용할 수 없는 환경에서 조리시간을 알려주는 장치로 유리병 안의 모래가 내려오면 종이 울리며, 높은 나무 위 열매를 수확하기 위한「Equipment(for fruit gatherer)」(2015)는 헬멧에 조준경을 부착시켜 위치를 가늠할 수 있게 한다. 외관상 오래된 구형 장비와 같이 보여지는 작가의 발명품은 군용 버너, 종 손잡이, 아이스크림 스쿱 등 빈티지샵에서 발견한 물건이나 우연히 찾은 옛 물건들을 조합한 것이다. 이 외에도 안전모에 프로펠러를 장착시킨 풍향계 등 작가의 엉뚱한 상상을 통해 해학적으로 표현된 장치들은 그가 꿈꿔왔던 숲 속 생활을 점차 가능하게 한다. 최병석의 장치는 다소 괴이하고 별난 발명가의 발명품처럼 보여지기도 하지만 연구소를 설립하고 장비를 설계하는 등의 제작 과정을 즐기며 이 또한 작품의 일부로 여긴다. 특히, 작가의 의도에 따라 용도를 알 수 없도록 복잡한 구조를 띄는 사물들은 보는 이의 상상력을 유도한다. ■ 박해니

"At the laboratory I named 'The Idea Factory for Living in the Forest', I contemplated on things I may require while living in the forest. What I came up were tools and devices that were less about human-centered conveniences are more about inconvenience and fun. The act and process of relishing the wonders of what the construction, trial and error, and far-fetched imagination brings to the production experience, as a rightful privilege of a creator, is in itself one of the attractiveness of an imaginary laboratory." (From the Artist's Statement) ● From early childhood Byeong-Seok Choi gained much admiration for forests through films and books which naturally led to camping outdoors. It is this experience from which his work stems, from an off-the-wall and mischievous imagination that rose from his days camping. Choi set up an imaginary lab dedicated to forest life and named it "The Idea Factory for Living in the Forest". Declaring himself the head of this lab, he went on to design and construct various equipments for such a purpose. He was apparently inspired by a fond childhood cartoon called Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner in which the main character Coyote creates a lab to create whimsical tools in order to capture the Road Runner. To the artist, camping is all about enjoying a complicated and inconvenient experience which is far from the new emerging camping culture that is filled with convenient equipment. He insists on the arduous traditions and lives as though he has always been a resident of the woods. The great outdoors, where the artist dreams of a free and charming forest life, is actually in large part restricted by laws and regulations inevitably applied as a result of thoughtless destruction and safety hazards. Despite such restrictions, Choi suggests and creates various never-before-seen equipments that are necessary for him to make real his long-time dream of a forest life. ● In this first solo exhibition, Choi will showcase bizarre and complex inventions that were constructed based on primeval techniques and seem impractical for everyday use. The "Lard Candle Maker" (2015) is a device that utilizes the pork fat that accumulates during grilling to make candles. "Fire Maker" (2015) is as the title suggests a bow-drill inspired igniting device that can starts a fire from the friction created between a wooden base and a turning bow. In addition to these, Choi has invented a variety of devices for plants and animals including a device that attracts insects and an animal feeding time alert device. His "Mole Control Stick" (2015) is a tool aimed to minimize agricultural loss by warding off moles, known for their high sense of hearing, away from crops by creating sounds and vibrations in the ground using a pogo stick and trumpet horns. The "Bug Catcher" (2015) captures insects in order to return them to their natural habitats while the "Egg Timer" (2015) is a non-electrical timer that can be used in environments without an electrical outlet, alerting you of the cooking time by ringing a bell after the sand finishes collecting in the bottle. His "Equipment (for fruit gatherer)" (2015) attaches a panoramic sight mechanism on a helmet to gauge and pick high-hanging fruits with better accuracy. The artist's inventions all have a look of old fashioned equipment and are actually made by combining age old items or things found in vintage shops like a military burner, bell handle, ice-scream scoop, etc. Choi's whimsical tools created from his unique sense of imagination - like the propeller-attached safety helmet – brings him one step closer to realizing his long-time dream of his forest life habitat. ● Byeong-Seok Choi's devices are rather like creations of an eccentric inventor and the entire process, setting up the lab and enjoying the design and production process of the equipment, is also considered a part of his work, as it is the artist's intention to present viewers with a mysteriously complicated product so that onlookers are forced to use their imagination in trying to understand the purpose of the objects. ■ PARKHAENI
