Transparent Passage

정정주의 작업에서 나타나는 건축의 모형들은 사람의 신체에 비유되며, 빛과 소리는 신체 안에 담긴 정신과 기억을 은유 한다. 이번 전시에서 보여 주는 평양의 건축들이 삽입된 투명한 구조물은 작가에게는 갈 수 없는 불편한 공간이다. 작가가 살고 있는 아파트 단지 내의 경비실 세 개가 합성된 구조물은 본인의 삶에 너무나 익숙한 일상의 공간이다. 전혀 다른 두 공간에 반복적으로 이동하는 빛이 드리우고 관람자의 시선이 더해진다. 대조적인 부조화는 불안한 심리상태를 자극해 관람자의 기억을 끄집어낸다.

1970년대 우리나라를 대표하는 불란서식 주택은 실존하지 않는 건축양식이다. 그 시대를 대변하는 일반적인 양옥들을 불란서식 주택이라 불렀고 우리는 그 집에서 태어나 자랐다. 이제 그 건축물들은 수명을 다해 다른 모습으로 바뀌어 가고 있다. 그 시대의 정체성을 보여주는 건축물을 기록해 가는 백승우는 사진을 통해 기억을 끌어내는 사람들의 속성을 흐트러트리고 싶어 한다. 더 이상 기존의 사진이 가진 의미를 찾을 수 없는 현시대에 자신이 만든 기준에 의해 사진을 배열하고 분류하며 기록한다.

두 작가에게 건물이나 도시공간은 그들 내면의 정신세계를 담은 그릇이라 할 수 있다. 그들은 다양한 도시의 공간, 건물들 사이를 계속 탐색하고 다닌다. 복잡한 도시의 통로는 막혀 있고 보이지 않는다. 폐쇄된 건물들은 구조들 간에 서로 침투하고 결합 되어 진다. 단절된 현대사회에서 소통이 어려운 그들은 아이러니하게도 도시, 공간, 건물의 구조를 통해 자신들의 내면세계를 표출하며 일반사회와 공감대를 찾아 간다. 마치 건물이나 구조물에 숨어있는 단절된 자신의 세계를 보여주며 사회를 향해 소리치는 듯하다. 현대인들이 갈망하는 대화와 소통을 작가들은 도시 공간을 통해 보여준다. 그것들은 자신의 기대치와 사회에 대한 바램과 가능성을 대변하며 현대사회에 강력한 메시지를 던지고 있다. ■ 조정란

The architectural models that appear in the works of Jeong Jeong-Ju represent the human body. The light and sound are metaphors of the mind and memory contained within the body. Among the works in the exhibition, the transparent structure, in which buildings of Pyeongyang have been inserted, is a space of discomfort for the artist, as it cannot actually be visited. Meanwhile, the structure made by synthesizing three security booths from the apartment complex the artist lives in is a space of familiar, everyday life. Light repeatedly moves to illuminate these two completely different spaces, as spectators follow with their eyes. The contrasting discord stimulates viewers' uneasy psychological states to bring out their memories. ● The so-called "French-style house," typical in Korea of the 1970s, is an architectural style that in fact does not exist. The common Western-style houses representative of that era were called "French-style" houses, and we were born and raised in them. Now the life span of these buildings is expiring, and the appearance of the city is changing. Seung Woo Back, who documents buildings that demonstrate the identity of the times, wants to overturn the tendency of people to evoke memory through photographs. In the present era, where there is no longer any significance to be found in existing photographs, the artist arranges, classifies and documents photographs according to his own standards. ● To both artists, buildings and urban spaces can be considered as vessels containing their inner mental world. They continuously rummage through the diverse spaces of the city and among the buildings. The passages of the complicated city are blocked and invisible. The closed-off structures interact with one another through penetration and combination. Finding it difficult to communicate in the isolated contemporary society, they express their inner worlds ironically through the city, spaces and architectural structures to find common grounds with society in general. It is as if they are shouting at society as they reveal their own isolated worlds hidden in buildings or structures. The artists show the dialog and communication desired by modern people, through these urban spaces. As representations of self-expectations, hopes and possibilities for society, they send a powerful message to society today. ■ CHOJUNGRAN
