두산갤러리 뉴욕은 2015년 4월 16일 부터 5월 14일까지 제4회 두산 연강예술상 수상작가 중의 한 명인 차재민의 개인전을 개최한다. 이번 전시는 작가의 뉴욕 데뷔 전으로서 그의 작품세계를 잘 보여주는 싱글 채널 비디오 다섯 점과 드로잉 세 점을 선별하여 선보일 예정이다. ● Hysterics는 정신적 신경증으로 인한 일시적 흥분상태를 일컫는 용어로, 정확한 사전 의미로는 an attack of hysteria를 뜻한다. 작가는 부조리한 현실에 대응하는 개인을 주목하고, 이러한 개인의 인식과 감정의 상태를 발작 또는 공격의 상태로 해석한다.

전시제목과 동명의 작품인「hysterics」(2014)는, 군 복무 중 사망한 아들의 죽음에 대한 의문과 진실을 밝히기 위해 30년 동안 싸워 온 허영춘 선생과의 인터뷰를 바탕으로 만들어진 작업이다. 작가는 작품 속 비극적인 사연을 전면에 드러내지 않고, 뼈나 피에 들어있는 인(燐)과 반응하는 블랙라이트, 백지와 조명 등을 이용해 당시의 상황을 연극적으로 연출한 작품이다. ●「Autodidact」(2014)는 허영춘 선생이 홀로 공부한 법의학 자료와 손글씨를 확대해 보여주고, 두 사람의 낭독을 각각 들려준다. 한 번은 허영춘 선생이 낭독하고, 다시 한 번 20대 초반의 젊은 남성이 낭독한다. 눈으로 읽기, 소리 내 읽기, 다시 소리 내어 읽기를 통해 '목소리'를 반사하는 일의 가능성과 한계를 드러내고자 한다.

「Fog and Smoke」(2013),「Trot, Trio, Waltz」(2013),「Chroma key and Labyrinth」(2013)는 도시를 주제로 삼은 일련의 작업이다.「Fog and Smoke」(2013)는 금융위기 및 부동산 경기침체로 공사가 중단된 인천 송도 국제신도시의 건설현장을 배경으로 탭댄서가 등장한다.「Trot, Trio, Waltz」(2013)는 일상적인 감각들, 골목에서 채집한 소리 (손수레, 오토바이 바퀴가 굴러가는 소리와 속도)를 통해 도시 뒷골목의 밤과 낮을 보여준다.「Chroma key and Labyrinth」(2013)는 도시의 혈관처럼 얽혀있는 케이블과 미로 같은 주택가 풍경을 담고 있다. ● 이러한 작품들을 통하여 작가는 사회의 갈등이나 불화에 주목한다. 하지만 직접적으로 설명하기를 절제하고 그 이면의 본질을 환기하여 개인과 타자의 관계 속에서 윤리의 문제를 탐구하고자 한다. ■ 두산갤러리 뉴욕

DOOSAN Gallery New York is pleased to announce the solo exhibition of Jeamin Cha, a recipient of the DOOSAN Artists Award, from April 16th through May 14th 2015. Serving as Cha's New York debut, this exhibition will feature five single channel video works as well as three drawings that best reveal the artist's scope and practice. ● Hysterics signifies a temporary state of agitation caused by psychological neurosis, more accurately standing for "an attack of hysteria." The artist focuses on individuals coping with irrational circumstances, analyzing and interpreting the cognizance and emotional state of these individuals. ● Sharing a title with the exhibition, the work hysterics (2014), is a work based on interviews with Youngchun Hur a man who has been fighting for 30 years to find the truth regarding the sudden death of his son while his son was serving time in the military. The artist does not directly reveal the tragic story behind the work, but rather uses theatrical devices to re-stage the circumstance, via the use of the phosphorous (contained inside human bones and blood), which reacts to black light, a blank piece of paper, and lighting. ● Autodidact (2014) shows close ups of the forensic medicine documents and handwriting that Youngchun Hur studied on his own, while an audio of two people reading is played. First, it is read by Huh himself, then it is read by a young man who is seemingly in his early 20s. The work brings out the potential and limit of the reflection of the voice through allowing viewers to read with their eyes, then listening to the words being read two times. ● Fog and Smoke (2013), Trot, Trio, Waltz (2013), Chroma Key and Labyrinth (2013) is a serial work about cities. Fog and Smoke (2013) uses the halted construction site of the Songdo City due to the financial, real estate, as well as economic crises as the background when a tap dancer appears. Trot, Trio Waltz (2013) takes sensations of daily life, collected sounds of alleyways (handcarts, motorcycle wheel rolling sounds and speed) and shows the night and day of the back alleys of the city. Chroma Key and Labyrinth (2013) shows various cables that are intricately tangled within the city like its blood vessels and the labyrinth-like landscape of the residential areas. ● It is through these types of works that the artist is able to focus on societal conflicts and discord while restraining from directly explaining them, but revealing the essence of ethics between the individual and others. ■ DOOSAN Gallery New York
