인간은 타인과의 다양한 관계를 통해 자신의 삶을 구성해 가게 마련이다. 이러한 관계는 무수한 우연과 필연이 교차하며 공적, 사적 상황을 만들곤 한다. 인간은 이러한 다양한 상황에 맞춰 자신을 연출함으로써 관계를 유지한다. 반드시 겉과 속이 같은 것이 아니며, 그 웃음과 눈물이 언제나 진실을 담보하는 것도 아니다. 내면 깊숙한 곳에 자리하는 본연의 자아는 은밀하게 감춰둔 채 스스로를 가공하고 포장하여 상황을 수용함으로써 관계를 유지해 나간다.

나는 이를 표현하기 위해 크리스털이라는 포장재를 선택 하였다. 크리스털의 사전적인 의미로는 매우 투명하고 굴절률이 높은 빛이 나는 광물을 의미한다. 모든 것을 투명하게 드러내고 가감 없이 보여줄 것 같은 크리스털일지라도 여러 가지 무늬로 가공되면 본래의 빛을 굴절시켜 본래의 형상을 왜곡시킨다. 이는 마치 보이는 것이 반드시 진실이 아니며, 어쩌면 그 현상 너머에 본질이 자리하고 있음을 암시하는 듯하다. 이러한 크리스털의 속성은 어쩌면 관계와 관계로 이루어진 우리의 삶과 매우 흡사하다. 마치 크리스털처럼 투명할 정도로 익히 익숙하고 일상적인 것들도 어쩌면 본질은 은닉한 채 그저 표피로만 드러나는 왜곡의 현상일지도 모른다. 나는 이 크리스털 글라스에 우리가 이미 익숙하고 친근한 사물들을 투영시켜 그 왜곡된 형상을 통해 현상과 본질에 대한 사유를 표현하고자 하였다.

우리가 이미 알고 있다는 사실도 어쩌면 왜곡된 현상에 불과하며, 일상의 무수한 관계 역시 본질을 숨긴 허상으로 이루어진 것일지도 모른다. 표현된 사물들이 본래의 모습이 아닌 전혀 다른 형상으로 표출되는 화면의 이중성은 바로 이러한 현상과 본질에 대한 대비이다. 크리스털 글라스는 우리가 마주하고 있는 오늘의 사회이며, 익숙하고 친근한 사물들은 그 속에서 이루어지는 소소한 일상의 은유이다. 그것은 우리가 분명히 알고 있다는 고정관념에 대한 회의이자 물음이며, 본질에 접근하고자 하는 의지의 표현이다.

복잡다단한 현대사회에서 생존하는 것은 날로 복잡한 관계를 필요로 하고 있다. 이러한 현실에 부응하기 위해 우리는 어쩌면 오늘도 크리스털 같은 해맑음으로 자신의 내면을 은닉한 채 사회라는 시공을 마주하고 있는지도 모른다. 자아에 대한 확인과 시대에 대한 주체적 인식, 그리고 따뜻한 온기를 지닌 삶에 대한 애정이 맑지만 차갑고 깨지기 쉬운 크리스털 같은 현대인의 심성을 어루만져 줄 것이다. ■ 문혜림

All humans are bound to compose their lives through their various relationships with other people. Such relationships often create public and private situations/affairs as the relationships cross countless accident and inevitability. And we sustain the relationships as we accommodate and direct ourselves to such various situations. The surface is not always the same as the inside, and smiles and tears do not always secure the truth. While we hide our innermost true ego in private, we maintain relationships through acceptance of the situations by processing and covering up our true selves. ● To express such idea, I chose crystal as a packing material. The dictionary definition of crystal is "a very transparent and shiny mineral that has high refractive index." Though the crystal gives us a sense that it shows us everything clearly without any adjustment, it still distorts original shape as it refracts natural light once it is processed with various patterns. It seems to imply that what is shown to us is not necessarily true and that maybe the nature is placed behind the phenomenon. Such properties of the crystal are somewhat quite similar to our lives that consists of relations and relationships. Familiar and ordinary things that are transparent like the crystal can also be the phenomenon of distortion, which reveals the mere surface while hiding the nature. I tried to express the reasons for the phenomenon and the nature through its distorted shape that is resulted from projecting the familiar things in a crystal glass. ● The facts that we believe we know can also be a mere distorted phenomenon and a myriad of everyday relationships can also be composed by the illusions that are hiding the nature. Duality of screen, which represents a totally different shape than the original shape of the object, is the contrast for the phenomenon and the nature. The crystal glass is the society today that we are facing and the familiar and the friendly things are metaphors of the small everyday lives that happen in the society. And that is the doubt and the question for the fixed idea of the things we believe we know, and is an expression of willingness to approach the essence. ● Survival in the complicated modern society requires more and more complexity in relationships. In response to such reality, maybe we are facing a time and space called society with crystal clear brightness of the crystal to hide our inner selves. Self-affirmation, independent recognition of the era, and the affection for life that holds the warmth will soothe the hearts of contemporary people, which is clear, cold, and fragile just like the crystal. ■ Moon Hye- lim
