꿈속으로의 여행 Journey in a Dream

신세계갤러리에서는 생동하는 봄을 맞이하여 호주의 설치미술가 핍앤팝(Pip and Pop)이 설탕을 이용해 만든 낙원의 모습을 선사합니다. ● 문화와 예술, 역사 속에 묘사된 파라다이스의 모습에서 영감을 얻어온 핍앤팝은 설탕과 다양한 오브제를 이용한 유쾌한 창작의 과정을 통해 일상의 사물들을 지극히 환상적인 세계의 것들로 둔갑시킵니다. 그의 설탕 작품은 전시 기간이 끝나면 해체되는 일시적인 프로젝트이지만 치밀하게 계산된 정교함을 통해 낙관적 상상력, 삶의 풍요로움, 덧없는 기쁨의 감정 등을 담습니다. ● 호주, 일본, 대만, 홍콩, 독일, 네덜란드와 영국 등 세계 유수의 기관 및 비엔날레에서 전시해온 핍앤팝은 해당 전시가 열리는 지역의 설화, 전설 및 사람들에서 영감을 얻어 작업해왔습니다. 신세계갤러리와의 협업의 과정을 통해 만들어진 또한 한국의 전래동화와 전통 설화에 대한 연구를 반영하고 있습니다. 핍앤팝은 안견의 몽유도원도(Dream Journey to the Peach Blossom Land) 속에 그려진 무릉도원의 모습에서 영감을 얻었는데, 알록달록한 설탕의 언덕들은 안평대군의 꿈 이야기를 담고 있을 뿐 아니라 견우와 직녀 설화 속 오작교의 모습, 단순신화 속의 호랑이와 곰의 모습 등 친근한 설화 속의 에피소드들을 담고 있어 아기자기한 감상의 재미를 더합니다.

특히 본 전시는 관객 참여의 기회가 열려있어 더욱 풍성한 전시 체험의 기회를 제공합니다. 관객들은 작가가 서울의 재래시장, 벼룩시장, 전통시장을 돌아다니며 수집한 재료들을 이용하여 오브제를 만들어볼 수 있습니다. 이 오브제들 중 일부는 실제 작품에 사용되어 전시에 흥미로움을 더합니다. 전시 종료 후 관객들은 직접 전시 철수 과정에 참여하여 고운 빛깔의 설탕을 직접 만지고, 섞고, 병에 넣어 간직할 수도 있습니다. ● 마치 석양이 진한 감흥을 불러일으키되 소유할 수는 없는 존재인 것처럼 핍앤팝의 프로젝트는 환상적인 경험을 선사하고 전시 기간이 끝나면 사라집니다. 전시가 끝나기 전에 달콤한 핍앤팝의 세계를 경험해보시기를 권합니다. In welcome of the new spring Shinsegae Gallery presents an image of paradise, made of sugar by the Australian installation artist, Pip and Pop. ● Inspired by the depictions of paradise as described in various fields of culture, art, and pop culture, the artist transforms ordinary everyday objects into beings of an immensely fantastic world through her delightful process of creation that uses sugar and figurines. Though the installations by Pip & Pop are temporary projects that are disassembled at the end of the exhibition, utopian imaginations, the richness of life, and fleeting emotions of happiness are held within its meticulously calculated refinedness. ● The work Pip & Pop, who has exhibited her work in renowned institutions and biennale throughout the world in Australia, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, the Netherlands, and UK among others, is motivated by local legends and folk tales in the area of the exhibition. The『Journey in a Dream』which was created in collaboration with Shinsegae Gallery was also shaped through research into Korean folk tales and oral traditions. Pip & Pop was especially inspired by the utopian scene in「Dream Journey to the Peach Blossom Land」by An Gyeon, and the colorful hills of sugar not only hold the dream vision of Prince Anpyeong but also holds familiar episodes in folk tales such as the crow and magpie bridge in the love-stars story, and the tiger and bear in Dangun mythology, adding fun and charm to the work. ● In particular, this show makes available a richer experience to the viewer by providing opportunities for audience participation. The Viewers are able to create objects using materials that the artist has collected in Seoul's conventional markets, flea markets, and traditional markets. Some of the objects are added to the actual work, increasing the intrigue and richness of the show. Audiences can also take part in the dismantling process at the closing of the exhibition, touching and mixing the beautifully colored sugar and even take some away in a bottle for keep. ● Just like a sunset that rouses powerful emotions yet cannot be possessed, Pip and Pop's project presents a fantastic experience and then disappears at the end of the exhibition.
