A Certain Face I-XXVIII

이번 카페포엠에서 소개하는 전시회는 임순남 작가의 개인전인『A Certain Face I-XXVIII』이다. 이 전시회에서는 대중 문화와 소셜 미디어 상의 이미지들에서 영감을 받아 제작한 총 28개의 인물화들을 선보인다. 작가는 2012년 이래로 인터넷 상에 올라와 있는 수많은 이미지들을 탐색해 왔고, 이로부터 주된 영감을 받았다. 이 전시의 제목『A Certain Face』는 인터넷에 업로드된 프로필 사진의 주인공들의 익명성에 주목하고 있는데, 임 작가는 이들 사진들을 작품의 주요 대상으로 삼았다. ● 이 전시에는 '셀카'를 기반으로 한 인물화들이 전시된다. 이들은 '인물화'임에도 실제 사람을 실물로 표현한 것이 아니라 작가의 친구들과 지인들의 프로필 사진을 소재로 삼아 회화로 재해석했다. 작가의 작품들은 인물들의 클로즈업된 얼굴들에 주목하여 현대 세대에서 빠르게 소비되는 이미지들 속에서 간과되기 쉬운 섬세한 감정과 심리상태를 담아내었다. 이 전시에는 또한 작가의 셀카 인물화 시리즈의 드로잉들도 처음으로 선보인다.

이 전시에서 주목할 작품은 인기가수 지드래곤의 온라인 이미지를 그린 대형 초상화인「더 골든 보이(The Golden Boy)」(2012)이다. 배우 하정우, 패션 모델 이수혁을 포함한 초상화들이 함께 전시될 것이며, 이 작품들은 대중문화에 대한 작가의 고찰을 담고 있다. 유명인들을 우상화하여 표현하는 온라인 이미지들과 달리 작가의 작품들은 인물들의 보다 내면적이고 친숙한 요소들에 보는 이의 관심을 집중시킨다. ● 임순남 작가는 서울에 거주하며 활동을 하고 있다. 최근 전시회로는『Time and Space; Nonlinear』(몽골리아 울란바타르 976 Art Gallery)와『Ma Move』(서울 Projectspace MO, 2014)등이 있다. ■ 민유진

Yujin Min presents 'A Certain Face I – XXVIII', a solo exhibition at CAFE FOUR M, consisting of a series of 28 portraits by Soonnam Lim, inspired by celebrity culture and images found on social media. ● Since 2012, Lim has explored the countless number of images uploaded on the internet as a major source of inspiration for her works. The title of this exhibition, 'A Certain Face', is a reference to the anonymity of the individuals who post these images, which in turn form the basis of Lim's portraits. ● This exhibition largely concentrates on a series of small-scaled portrait paintings based on 'selfies'. Although Lim's works could be described as 'portraits', they are not painted from life. They are profile pictures of numerous friends and acquaintances, reproduced as paintings. Her works focus on close-up views of their faces, and they focus on nuanced emotions and states of mind often overlooked by the current generation, submerged in speedy and copious consumption of digital images. This exhibition will also include her previously unseen works on paper from the 'selfie' portrait series. ● Highlights in this exhibition include 'The Golden Boy' (2012), a large-scale portrait based on an online image of G-Dragon, a Korean pop star. Lim's exploration of mass media comes together as portraits of well known Korean celebrities, including actor Ha-Jung Woo and fashion model Lee Soo Hyuk. And yet, in spite of drawing from idolised images of popular icons, Lim's paintings divert our attention to less obvious and intimate portrayals of people. ● Soonnam Lim lives and works in Seoul.
