수집이 창조가 될 때

서울시립미술관(SeMA)은 2015년 첫 전시로『수집이 창조가 될 때』를 남서울생활미술관에서 개최합니다. 이 전시는 김희수, 이주용, 허명욱 등 3인 작가들이 장시간에 걸쳐 수집한 콜렉션을 선보이는 자리로 마련되었습니다. 김희수 작가는 디자인의 역사적 맥락에서 수집한 1950~60년대의 오디오 제품을, 이주용 작가는 기억과 기록이라는 키워드로 수집한 앤틱 카메라와 옛 사진을 전시합니다. 허명욱 작가는 다양한 시기의 빈티지 가구와 식기 콜렉션을 자신이 제작한 빈티지 스타일의 작품과 함께 전시합니다. ● 앤틱 카메라, 골동 오디오, 빈티지 가구 등 이들의 다채로운 수집품들은 작가 개개인의 취향을 반영하는 자기애적 사물이라는 점에 그치지 않고 자신들 작업에 직간접 영향을 끼치는 창조적 참조물이라는 점에서 평가되어야 합니다. 나아가 이들의 콜렉션이 사적 영역을 떠나 공공 미술관에서 전시될 때에 미학적 공감대가 확장되고 문화사적 함의가 충만진다는 점에서 이번 전시의 의미의 층위가 더해질 것입니다. ● 근현대기의 특정 생활 양식과 취미를 감지케하는 동시에 작가들의 수집 태도가 창작과 어떻게 연결되는지를 잘 보여주는 이번 전시를 통해 생활미술관으로서의 남서울미술관의 역할이 다시 한번 강조될 것입니다. 한편, 이번 전시를 찾는 관람객들은 수집 행위가 하나의 창조적인 과정이 될 수 있다는 경이로운 발견의 즐거움으로 새로운 경험을 만끽하게 될 것입니다. 많은 관심과 성원을 부탁드립니다. 감사합니다. ■ 김홍희

수집이 창조적 행위가 될 수 있을까. 수집이 단지 소유나 취향의 전시가 아닌 창조가 될 수 있다면 그것은 어떻게 가능할까. 그것은 수집이 사물의 집적이나 자기애적인 행위로 끝나지 않고 어떤 새로운 의미를 만들어낼 때 가능할 것이다. 그 새로운 의미란 수집을 통한 새로운 세계의 발견일 수도 있고, 또는 수집이 어떤 창조적 행위에 모티브를 제공하거나 접속됨으로써 얻어지는 것일 수도 있다. 그 때 우리는 수집을 가리켜 하나의 '창조적 행위'라고 일컬을 수 있다.

수집의 의미는 수집가에 따라 다를 것이다. 하지만 그것이 어떤 형태로든 일정한 의미 생산을 통한 자아와 세계의 발견이라면, 그것은 나름의 '세계 만들기(World Making)'임에 분명하다. 일찍이 일본 민예운동의 창시자인 야나기 무네요시(Muneyoshi Yanagi, 1889~1961)는 그런 의미에서의 수집 행위를 가리켜 '창조적 수집'이라고 불렀다. 오늘날 다양한 사람들에 의해 다양한 형태의 수집 행위가 이루어지고 있는 만큼, 수집이 가지는 이런 의미를 확인하는 일은 그 자체로도 창조적이라 할 것이다. 아마 소유와 사유 사이, 발견과 과시 사이 어디쯤인가에 놓여 있을 수집이라는 행위의 의미를 적극적으로 조명해볼 이유가 여기에 있다. 수집의 쓸모는 어떻게 문화를 만들어내고 개인에게 세계에 대한 인식을 확장하는 기제로 작용하는지를 밝혀낼 때 생겨나고, 그때 비로소 수집은 창조가 된다. ■ 최범

Seoul Museum of Art (SeMA) presents When Collecting Becomes Creating at SeMA Nam Seoul Living Arts Museum. The exhibition displays the collections gathered by three artists Kim Hee Soo, Lee Ju Yong, and Huh Myoung Wook over an extended period of time. The artist Kim Hee Soo presents a collection of audio products from the 1950s and 60s gathered with an idea of historical context of design. The artist Lee Ju Yong presents a collection of antique cameras and old photographs with a particular interest in memory and documenting. The artist Huh Myoung Wook presents a collection of vintage furniture and dinnerware from various periods along with his own vintage-style works. Three artists' different types of collections such as antique cameras, antique audio, and vintage furniture should be considered as a creative reference more than the narcissistic objects that reflect the each artist's taste. Moreover, the exhibition can be meaningful, in that aesthetic sympathy expands cultural historical implications when their collections are displayed in public museum beyond the private realms. Through the exhibition that demonstrates how the artist's collecting is related to creating as well as the modern and contemporary lifestyles and tastes, it intensifies the role of Nam Seoul Museum as a 'living arts museum.' Also, audience will have a new experience by discovering the act of collecting that can be a creative process. We anticipate much attention and have great expectations. Thank you. ■ KIMHONGHEE

Can collecting become a creative activity? If collecting can become creating, not simply being an activity of possessing or displaying one's tastes, how can this situation come about? Perhaps it is possible when collecting does not end at merely gathering objects or as narcissistic act, but when it creates new meaning. This new meaning could be the discovery of a new world through collecting, or a new meaning illuminated as the collection provides a motif or connection for creative activities. We could then call collecting one's 'creative activity.' The meaning of collecting might differ from collector to collector. However, if it can somehow lead to the discovery of an identity and a new world by producing particular meanings, it definitely is a 'World Making' of its own. In this sense, Muneyoshi Yanagi(1889~1961), the founding father of the Japanese folk art movement, has earlier called that act of collecting, 'creative collecting.' Today people participate in various forms of collecting, and identifying the meaning of collecting itself has creative implications. This is the reason why we would like to demonstrate the meaning of collecting, the act that lies somewhere between possessing, discovering, and presenting. The use value of a collection is determined by how it creates culture and broadens one's awareness of the world. Therefore, collecting becomes creating. ■ CHOIBUM
