조건부 드로잉

두산갤러리 뉴욕은 2015년 3월 12일 부터 4월 9일까지 제4회 두산 연강예술상 수상작가 중의 한 명인 김민애의 개인전을 개최한다. 김민애는 전시공간 내부의 구조물을 작품의 일부로 이용하거나 아이디어로 삼는 '장소특정적(site-specific)' 설치를 통하여 미술을 바라보는 전통적 시각에 의문을 제기하며, 이러한 시각의 근원이 되는 거대 구조와 개인과의 상호관계성(Mutuality)에 대해 '자기참조(Self-referentiality)'적 시각을 드러내는 작업을 하는 작가이다.

김민애의 작업은 한 개인이 현실에 대응하는 태도를 구체화시켜 보여준다는 점에 있어서는 실존적이지만 미술을 규정하는 제도를 바라보는 시선에서는 회의적 태도를 갖기 때문에, 세상과 마주하면서 느끼는 거대 구조의 미묘한 억압이 부조리함에도 불구하고 필연적으로 이에 대응해야만 하는 자기모순적 태도가 작품에 반영되게 된다. 따라서 그의 작업은 필연적으로 선험적 구조에 기대어 존재하거나 상황에 따라 상호 의존적이며 유기적 관계를 가질 수 밖에 없으므로 조형적으로 독립된 완결성을 갖기 보다는 비고정적이고 제한적이며 모순적(contradiction) 형태를 띈 미완의 오브제로 존재하게 되는 것이다.

이번 전시에서 김민애는 미술작품과 전시공간이라는 이분법적 관계를 회의적 시각으로 바라보는「조건부 드로잉」작품을 선보일 계획이다. 작가는 전시공간에서 도외시 되었던 출입문이나 리셉션 데스크 등의 기능적 공간들을 실측한 후 이들의 크기를 반영하여 전시장 벽면에 드로잉하거나 액자들을 전시하므로써 공간과 작품은 서로 조응하게 되지만, 그 실체는 특정한 근거가 없는 모순적 성격을 갖게 함으로써 기존의 '화이트 큐브'를 바라보는 전통적 시선과 이를 규정하는 근본조건들을 다시한번 돌아보게 한다. ■ 두산갤러리 뉴욕

DOOSAN Gallery New York is pleased to announce the solo exhibition of Minae Kim, a recipient of the DOOSAN Artist Award, from March 12 through April 9, 2015. ● Minae Kim employs the structure of the interior of exhibition spaces as a portion of her work through site-specific installation. In this way, her work brings to the fore questions regarding traditional perspectives in art, institutionalization, and self-referentiality. ● While Kim's work may be existential in the sense that it materializes the manner in which an individual responds to reality, Kim also maintains a skeptical attitude towards systems that regulate art. Therefore, the self-contradicting attitude of having to cope with institutionalization despite its absurdity and irregularity is apparent in her work. ● In addition, Kim's works by necessity exist through relying on structures and having a mutually dependent relationship, so instead of being formally isolated and complete, her works appear limited, restricted, and unfinished. In this exhibition, she will debut Conditional Drawing, a new work that interrogates the supposed binary relationship between art and the exhibition space. ● The artist measures the often disregarded but functional areas of the gallery such as the front door and the reception desk, then uses their scale to create a wall drawing, or hangs frames on the wall— all to create a correspondence between the space and the work. But the significant essence of Kim's work is that it does not in and of itself carry specific content, thereby pointing outside of itself to allow viewers to question the pre-existing condition of the "white cube" and other conventions and systems. ■ DOOSAN Gallery New York
