일상은 살갗과 같다. 살갗(피부)은 근육과 몸의 기관을 보호하는 상피조직으로, 하도 친숙하여 '있다'라는 것을 실감하며 살아가기가 어려울 정도이다. 그런데 이 살갗이 의자에라도 부딪힐 때면 상피조직에 타격이 가해지고 심할 경우 멍이 들기도 한다. 이때가 살갗이 트라우마를 입는 경우이다.

트라우마를 입은 살갗은 변색되거나 탈색되고 종종 '고통'을 수반한다. 이 고통의 순간에 너무도 친숙하여 의식하지 못하던 '살갗이 있음'이 의식의 영역으로 다가오게 된다. 이때가 바로 바닥에 깔려 그림자처럼 우리에게 붙어 다니던 일상이 벌떡 일어나 우리의 안면을 향해 돌진해오는 순간인 것이다.

이우림, 하이경, 황선태, 이채영의 작품은 일상이 별안간 우리에게 다가올 때 일어나는 일련의 현상을 침착하게 포착하고 있다. 아내와 자식과 함께하던 익숙함과 분리되어 순간적인 트라우마에 빠진 가장, 세월호 참사라는 가슴 아픈 기억이 순간적으로 떠올라 흐드러진 벚꽃 앞에서 목 놓아 울던 순간, '샤워 한다'라는 일상 속에서 흘러내리는 물을 머리로 받으며 자기몰입에 빠져있는 한 남자, 항상 지나다니던 한길가의 그 집이 그날따라 이상하게 낯설게 보일 때, 이 모든 순간 '일상'이 우리를 느닷없이 강타하며 '너와 나의 개별적인 일상'이 그 실체를 드러낸다. 그리고 감정이 반응한다. 때로는 무기력과 무심함으로, 때로는 분노와 비탄으로, 때로는 우울과 공포로, 때로는 갈망과 사랑으로.

네 작가들은 각자 다른 차별화된 벡터(vector)를 가지고 일상을 대면한다. 이우림의 벡터는 심연을 헤엄쳐 들어가 무의식의 바닥을 두드린다. 하이경의 벡터는 대상을 연민의 시선으로 바라보고 있고, 황선태의 벡터는 논리성 이라는 빛과 허구성이라는 그림자를 동시에 향하고 있으며, 이채영의 벡터는 자신의 잃어버린 반쪽을 찾듯이 호기심 어린 눈으로 일상에게 다가간다. 이 모든 순간 일상은 느닷없이 그 실체를 홀연히 우리 앞에 드러내고, 우리는 아랫배 저 깊숙한 곳으로부터 전율하는 생경함에 그저 몸을 내 맡길 뿐이다.

전시참여 작가들의 전시공간마다 작품 제작과정에 이용된 사진, 작가노트, 드로잉, 오브제 등 아카이브 자료들을 함께 전시함으로써 관람객이 작업과정을 이해하도록 디스플레이한 것이 이번 전시의 특징이다. 이 전시를 통하여 관람객들이 '개별적인 일상'의 의미를 다시한번 경험하는 계기가 되기를 바란다. ■ 이기모

Everyday life and the human skin are much alike in character. The skin is the body's outer covering, which protects the muscles and inner body organs. It is too familiar to us that we often fail to recognize that it exists as part of us. There are moments, however, when we feel our skin, such as when we bump into the furniture in the living room and our skin gets bruised. In moments like these, the skin gets traumatized. Traumatized skin that is discolored or bleached is often accompanied by pain. This moment of pain paves the way for us to recognize that our skin exists as part of us. It is the moment in our everyday life that clings to us like a shadow under our toe, springs up, and dashes to our faces. ● The works of LEE WOO-LIM, LEE CHAE YOUNG, Hi Kyoung, and Hwang Seon Tae capture the moments in our everyday life when certain phenomena are revealed from out of the blue: the head of a household who falls into a mental trauma, separated from his familiar family environment with his wife and kid; a moment when an ordinary passerby cries out loud upon seeing cherry blossoms in full bloom, with the memory of the Sewol disaster then seeping into his mind and wiping out his delight; a man standing with a self-obsessed thought while water pours over his head during his daily shower; or a day different from any other ordinary day when a neighboring house on the street looks extremely uncanny. These are the moments when our everyday life hits us all of a sudden and reveals its eerie reality as an "individual everyday life" for each of us. After the attack of everydayness we respond sometimes with lethargy and apathy, sometimes with rage and grief, sometimes with depression and fear, and sometimes with thirst and love. ● The four artists in the exhibition encounter their everyday lives with individually different vectors of attitudes. LEE, WOO-LIM takes a vector that submerges into the deep sea and knocks on the bottom of the unconscious. The vector of Hi, Kyoung gazes at objects full of compassion. That of Hwang Seon Tae heads into the light of logic and the shadow of illusion simultaneously. As if searching for one's lost half, the vector of LEE CHAE YOUNG gets closer to her everyday life with eyes of curiosity. All these moments disclose the substance of everyday life to us. We just submit our sensibilities to the trembly, uncanny nature of everyday life, which surges from down there, from the guts of our stomachs. ● The distinct feature of this exhibition, "When Every Day Reveals Itself from Out of the Blue," is that it includes archives such as photos, artist's notes, drawings, objects, and various archival materials that have been used by each artist to create his artwork. These archives may help the spectators better understand the sources of artistic ideas and the processes of making artworks. When the spectators gain an opportunity to reflect on their individual everyday lives while seeing this exhibition, the pleasure will all be mine as the curator of the exhibition. ■ GIMO YI
